    If you want a crazy comparison, watch this video, then watch one which shows the mess that some "experts" can cause driving a simple semi-trailer on a straight road. The people involved in these types of move are the true stars of the trucking industry, and that is the whole team, not just these five star drivers. You all have my admiration.

    Labour day weekend, 1983, I was project manager for shipping a 600 ton nuclear reactor assembly from Lachine, Que. Canada, to the Darlington generating station then under construction, east of Toronto and Oshawa Ont. Say 500 Km or so. That move cost about CDN $125,000 at that time. This work included moving the assembly from the fabricating shop onto the free-floating barge using a multi-axle heavy load transporter. Barge rental, tie-down, tug boat to pull the barge up the St Lawrence river and Lake Ontario to the new power station site. Landing the barge and setting it down on a prepared gravel bed, ready for unloading. That weekend was very hot and windy, with 6 foot waves on the lake. Pretty exciting time.

    I’d really like to see the cost calculations for these methods vs cargo helicopter fleets. On the one hand, fuel for cargo helicopters is super expensive, as is equipment wear and tear. On the other hand, you don’t have to coordinate traffic on major roads and can take a direct route instead of only using the largest roads that can take the weight.

  • @sythex92

    @sythex92

    The largest helicopter lift capacity is what.. 40k? These heavy loads way 100,000+, and it's much harder to get 4 helicopters flying in unison than it is to strap the thing to a truck.

  • @Rms2015

    @Rms2015

    Жыл бұрын

    Huh. It sounds like maybe you'd have to coordinate with local authorities anyway, so that nothing important is damaged be the collective downdraft of hundreds or thousands of cargo helicopters trying to lift the same load. It still feels like there should be a better way to do this, but I suppose a 600 meter wide treaded transport tank is also out of the question? I mean on the one hand, it'd be a war crime to drive it, but on the other hand, you wouldn't have to worry about clearing the path and it'd probably only take a few dozen years to assemble on site.

    Helicopter fuel consumption and equipment wear are changing. However, it is not necessary to distribute traffic on major roads and being able to take direct routes instead of just using paths that can bring in volume is a priority.
