I appreciate this video...I sold my acoustic kit back around '07 (after playing some 32 years) because I had moved to an apartment...so I bought an e-kit (which to me has a different feel than an acoustic kit)...now (through this video) I better realize going with low volume cymbals and decent head muting can put me back into the acoustic kit saddle again(!)...oh, how I love drums...

Excellent video. I can't thank you enough for making this gem. I've always had the luxury of an isolated drum studio. When I had to move into a smaller space, suddenly I had neighbors and noise to worry about, forcing me out of playing. I bought an electric conversion and all that jazz, but it hasn't inspired me to play as much as the real acoustic experience. It's been 3 years since I've played my acoustic kit. Quite frankly, it's depressing. This video has just given me a massive amount of hope, and I'm excited to try this out. I really would like to hear your practice mix with compression and gain applied. Is there any possible way I can get you to do that, please? Would be willing to buy you a beer for it! :D

Try this... Take a regular 1/2" thick cymbal felt, attach this felt underneath your cymbal half way between the edge and bell. Attach the felt with a screw, large washer and locking nut that will fit though one of your cymbal's holes. The washer should cover about 60-70% of the felt surface, but not the whole thing. Install the screw from the top side of the cymbal, then place the felt on the screw underneath the cymbal, then the washer then the locking nut. Only tighten to finger tight to start. What will this do? reduce vibration and lower the overall sound of the cymbal. By tightening or loosening the felt, you will change the volume of the cymbal. Tighter = quieter. By moving the location of the felt closer to the bell or closer to the edge, this will also change the pitch or tone of the cymbal. So if you are looking to play low volume cymbals without edging, or mutes, this is a serious option. The LOCK nut is crucial as the vibration from the cymbal will work to unscrew a non-locking nut. I was using Sabian Quiet Tone cymbals, with a rubber edge guard, and triggers. I just purchased a full set of Agean R bronze low volume cymbals, and was surprised at how loud they were. So I started experimenting, as I wanted to play the cymbals without triggers... I stumbled along the cymbal felt idea and was very pleasantly surprised at the results.

I also watched your super pad Vs silent stroke Vs rtom video. I have one question. Would you consider swapping out your super pads for rtoms as these are what I'm tempted to purchase due to the rim shot and tuning capabilities.. Though I can hear the cool musicality you mentioned.. I just can't make up my mind 🤔🙄🤨😬

Hey Stephen. Could you do a video on this stuff comparing it to other instruments. I bought silent strokes and L80s a few years ago. During my research it was tough to see just how loud they were in context to other stuff. I made a video after I bought them but you are much better equipped to make a properly educational video

Hi there, very nice & full comparison, I love it ! I'm surprised by the high volume in your kitchen even with low volume setup. Did you tried agean silent cymbals ? Volume wise, It's half between regular cymbals and L80 : too loud for practising the most silent way in a flat, but really nice to have a more controlled sound in a house without having head exploding after 3 hits on a crash :)

Hi Stephan, thanks for posting this video. Really helpful for me. One question, I realized that premium brands low volume cymbals like Zildjian tends to be more effective as compared to those coming from China. Any comments on this?

I was watching this at a sleepover and I had my volume down cause it was about 2:30 AM, and when the Med loud switched to the Quiet I couldn't even hear it

the loudest for the 'practice kit' is -20.3. no wonder my neighbour is complaining haha

Did it seem to anyone else like the direct mics were quieter than the room mics on the story above? There may have been no compression, but was the noise gate which would have had even more impact while recording the practice kit sections? Just trying to get clarification on data which could mislead a less experienced recording drummer.

Great one man! I have the Sabian Quiet Tone’s along with the Sound Off pads and they yield results very similar to this. It’s great to have an outside view (and sound) of the difference it really makes. You rock!!

How much of a difference is there in the feel of a regular drum head, compared to those Aquarian pads?

did you ever try the Efnote drums? Any of them? I believe often you are not that in favour of edrums. But did get me an efnote and enjoying it a lot.

Question: are you above or below the kitchen?

What if you mixed the kitchen room mic with the actual drums? I think it would sound pretty fat

8:14 -18 dB of difference is, indeed, a huge difference! Every -6 dB cuts the perceived volume in HALF. So -18dB is half, of half, of half (or 12.5%) of the louder perceived volume level.

Hi Stephen, I'm looking to muffing my drum kit, but super pads are very expensive, also Rtom, compared to remo silent stroke. Is really a big difference of quality, sound and feel? Are remo too bouncy? If I put a strip of duck tape on one side of the pad it will help to reduce the bouncy? Also, have you tested the Zildjian Gen 16 vs L80? Thank you!

how would the practice kit compare to a full electronic kit? if you can overlook the sound quality difference, of course. could the practice kit be hooked up to a MIDI mapper, and be used as an electronic kit? I mean, the practice kit is _quiet_ , but it does seem to register the strikes well enough through the mics, so why not just route the signal through another device, amplify it and turn the quiet kit into a loud kit? the thing here being, the loud kit works by means of physical strength over the instrument. if you have a kit that muffles the impact of the physical strength (physical kit, not electronic) while still capturing a strong impact but without sound, you can turn that impact into sound, electronically, without an electronic kit per se. IDK, I'm just impressed by the mechanics of it.

I'd recommend checking your local craigslist, FB marketplace, etc, as you'll often find decent used entry level setups for like $100. It's really, really helpful to have a kick pedal and hi-hat stand at the least (hard to home-make decent versions). Or maybe you could do like I did for the first few months I was learning: Sit on the floor with your right leg extended. Big ol' cardboard box for a bass drum that I kicked with the ball of my right foot, whacking sideways (foot raised a bit on some pillows to hit more of the center of the box). Cheap-as tambourine with some damping/wires on the head, and resting on a cardboard resonator box, to mimic a snare. More boxes for toms. And piles of metal wire shelving squares (like 1-foot square, the type you can build modular cube storage things out of) as kind of cymbal-ish sounds. I was also semi-successful making a little hi-hat "stand" that I could control the tension on by pulling down on wires with my left foot (left leg bent to make a "4" with my right leg). "Kick" and "snare" weren't bad sounding, "cymbals" definitely left something to be desired. I'm sure there are better homemade solutions if that's what you're after, but this setup served me pretty well and was fun to play and learn on until I got my first kit (full sized, with brass cymbals and some hardware, for $80 - and I sold miscellaneous extra drums/parts that came with it to make that money back right away anyway!) So yeah, buying a kit can be very inexpensive, but there are also other options, especially for the short-term or while you're waiting for a good deal to come up. Hope this was helpful!

I understand the acoustic sound some want but I feel electric drum kit might be the way to go (sound really nice and some have mesh heads for bounce) if you want quiet and you don’t have to deal with tuning and can get different sounds also can wear headphones but if you really want a real acoustic sound then yah practice kits are good.

Adam pazaz I have one. You still need to have dampening underneath for the high hat pedal and kick drum because there still is that stomping sound.

I have both ride & hats, the L80 sounds "better" to me, less harsh sounding that the quiet tones. Big plus for quiet tone ride is the bell sound which is much more defined/loud that on the L80 20" ride, but except that, I'll go for L80. If you look for better sounding cymbals (but really louder than L80), check Agean natural R / Jazz R series on drumtec channel for example !

at low volumes the hi end is loudest and at hi volumes the low end is loudest because science.
