A relative of mine thought a fox or a raccoon was killing her chickens. She later found out that it was a neighbor’s three-legged dachshund that was killing livestock for some reason. The dog was frequently seen running loose along the road but it disappeared a couple months later after killing my relative’s chickens. I suspect another neighbor caught the dog attacking chickens and shot it.

I caught my first raccoon last night. I target woodchucks on my small property and last night a raccoon got in my 160 bucket set. I just happened to be waking up when I heard the trap fire outside my bedroom window! It thrashed around for about 10 seconds then all went silent. Never seen a raccoon here in my 58 years in this house. I did see 2 on my security camera last summer though finally walking around my backyard.

@Lgh34474 it is actually a lot of work setting and monitoring all of those traps. And most traps do discriminate based on the type of trap, or the way it is set. And some traps kill their target animals instantly. You are factually wrong and just arguing with your feelings.

@@kennnuthatch5724 I trap at deer feeders. I've tried store brand fruit loops, and dog and cat kibbles. Mini marshmallows has the edge and they stuff in tight enough below the trigger to not dump out in this application. I should have said dry jello powder 🤠. It's for smell. Koolaid powder probably works too. Coons are idiots. You put 4 DPs close enough together, I swear they'd have one on every foot. Bacon, sardines, bread and maple syrup, anything. Mardi Gras beads and powdered sugar will probably work. Corn at the feeder gets them there, Sweet or savory smell and something to reach for does the rest. I bet popcorn works, catfish dough balls, wad of cellophane, anything. They can't help themselves in my experience.

@@kennnuthatch5724 Shoulda said I haven't been impressed with chocolate. Knock off Count Chocula was no great shakes. Cherry jello/koolaid dust is the lure. Coons have to beat the pigs to anything I try. Feeders in pens are the most productive. If action cools, wait a couple of weeks for move ins to fill the void and start again. I release possums because they eat ticks. Haven't paid enough attention to what they love. Should have. I'd avoid it unless it's the best for coons. I'm not a fur guy. I'm targeting for turkey poult and fawn survival. My carcass disposable area is 1/2 mile from my deer hunting areas. I figure every meal I lure coyotes to means more poults/fawns survive. I do the same with hog cadavers. What primo cuts don't go in the seal-a-meal go to the yote buffet. This is a "keep my tax exemption" program and is good exercise and, so far, kind of a hoot to do to get out of the house. I bought 3 Duke pro 550s yesterday to go after bobcats. (And probably coyotes, though I won't target them) Cats are at least good eating. My dog is an aggravatingly and demandingly good squirrel dog. I have about 30 more squirrels in the freezer than I can ever eat. So, I'm thinking bobcat and catfish bait. My wife is dropping those subtle hints that she's ready for me to head to the woods for a while. If she does my hunting laundry, I know I've overstayed at home.👊🤠

Never thought about them being layed down because it just doesn't freeze the ground here in central Texas much. But I can't see any reason it wouldn't work laying down. Key is keeping everything tight so the trigger moves before the trap and that's important regardless of orientation. I will have to remember this when trapping our harder ground areas. We are all granite and some areas you can't drive a pick ax into without a masonry bit in a big hammer drill. Laying the trap down will let me work those areas.

As a hunter myself, I have used this trap to catch 2 coons. May not seem much, but I will not use this particular trap ever again. First, the argument of it being dogproof is basically a non-argument. A cage may accidentally catch a dog, but you can simply release them with no harm done. Plus, cats or squirrels can also trigger the mechanism easily. Secondly, raccoons are tactile creatures, so their paws are extremely sensitive. You just have to use a stick to see the damage this trap does. One raccoon I trapped with it managed to pull out just enough, so it barely stayed trapped by a joint. It lay there convulsing. Make no mistake, this trap will put these animals in a lot of pain. Cages to the same trick and cause no harm. Also, mass-hunting raccoons in an attempt to control numbers is a vain effort. The proper term here is compensatory fertility. Studies have shown clearly that raccoons procreated disproportionately more in areas where they are hunted intensely as opposed to sanctuaries.

Very cool. Do you have videos on how to start trapping? I would like to trap coyotes here in Southern Indiana. I've seen several just driving down the road. I love next to a wildlife refuge. Federal land, but could get permission on the farm land around the refuge to trap. Thanks for sharing. Very cool. ♥️🤘♥️
