Hyundai's futuristic IONIQ 5 is a beast of an EV and their new IONIC 6 takes a lot of what people loved about the 5 and puts it in a sleek sedan body. Alex took the new 6 for a week and is here to share his thoughts on why this is his new favourite electric car.

    Definitely. Most of us are still waiting for that break-even point where buying an EV is more or less the same as the cost of an ICE. This one's sorta getting there, but it's still $42k for the base model. That's certainly better than most EVs that have been stuck around $80k-150k. One of these days, that economy of scale is gonna kick in... any day now... I dunno if they have much control over what cars they're able to test drive though. It seems like most of the cars they review are media samples that get passed around, so it depends on what's available. They're usually commenting that they only have a week or two daily driving the cars until they have to pass them on to the next reviewer.

    As per usual, Alex is one of the most entertaining reviewers of electric cars on the internet. Great stuff. In my opinion the Ioniq 6 has a very mixed bag of visual choices. The rear end is great, and probably the best part of the car. The front end is unoffensive in a “we took the shape language of a Porsche from 10+ years ago and gave it sharper lines” sort of way. My issue is with the waist line. I *know* that they were intentionally breaking the mold with where they put the apex of that arc, but I cannot stand how it visually drops after the B-pillar. And I’d rather the waist line meet the rear portion of the roof line in a different, maybe less-sharp way.

    It'd be nice to have an EV brand comparison once every few years, like a compilation of the EV reviews comparing how refined their UI's are, what flaws they have compared to the competition, basically what makes the different brands stand apart from each other besides just looks. Imo there's basically 3 types of EV's right now, the Tesla's, the high end sports cars that cost way too much for most people, then everything else cause they all just seem to fail at what should be simple things.

Can you provide any data that would demonstrate a difference in lane centering between these cars on comparable roads? I understand it's very opinion-based, but I would like to know why one car (especially a more expensive one) would stay in its lane better than another. Are there differences in sensors? In software? Alex, (and Andy) I really like your car reviews. They're informative in a way that other car reviews aren't, especially the Audio System portion. Could you please expand the Audio System review part with more subjective and objective information? It's woefully underserved in other car reviews. I also like how you relate the acceleration in "everyday use" terms rather than using 0-to-60 numbers. Another request, could you do a series of "living with a BEV" with tips since BEVs are a completely different beast when it comes to "fueling up" compared to ICEVs? And other BEV related challenge videos, for example, a "week of charging only using "free" level 2 chargers supplied by retailers"? Keep up the great work.

    Hi EV Fan Girls.. Because a EV wieghs more than a ICE car.. Car Transporters can carry less cars.. so you need More Co2 Blurting Trucks to transport them around the Country.. And the Same with this car.. As all, ship, car shipping transporters have a weight limit, to be efficient.. Guess what you idiots..you need more Ships.. EV Is the biggest lie on Earth..

    I'm 6'4 and own this car in the all-wheel drive limited version and yes the roof is close to my head but I don't hit. I think it just depends on how tall your actual torso is more than your height. I actually love how I fit in the car especially because it's so long I can stretch out even with my son's car seat behind the driver side.

    Honestly have been so excited for you to get a look at this, as an owner of a 2018 Ioniq EV (possibly the best value 2nd hand EV on the market imo) I'm always interested in seeing how Hyundai have improved. At this rate I'll probably end up with an Ioniq 8 or whatever in future.

    I traded in my EV6 for this and enjoy it way more than I ever enjoyed the EV6. The handling is far more refined and I love the ride. The one big thing I do hate is the silver trim around the infotainment reflects onto the windshield as a bright stripe. Sadly it's hard to vinyl wrap because the glass on the infotainment covers the matte silver trim. That and the US model currently has a graphical bug in the birds' eye camera. It has a black box around the white stock car photo which looks crappy, furthermore the camera button being on the far right is an odd choice.

    Wouldn't covering the back tires and somehow shielding the front tires lower the drag coefficient even more? The rims definitely look pretty but I'm sure people would appreciate increased range even more than wheel aesthetics. I would also add an option to cover the roof and bonnet with solar panels, it would not give unlimited range but it would give some free range every day, at least enough to cover most people's daily commute to and from work, it would be great to never have to visit a charging station during a regular work week. I do appreciate that it's mostly buttons rather than putting everything in the screen so you have to look away from the road to change things, it could do with more recycled plastic though.

  • @0Rookie0

    @0Rookie0

    A 100W solar panel at an unachievable 100% efficiency for 8 hours a day would give you just over 5 miles a day in the Ioniq 6. It's just not worth it at this point. Add 20 pounds of equipment to a car, and factor in the solar panels would be locked at a flat angle AND it's not always sunny, and its even less worth it. A lot of consumers don't even park in direct sunlight to begin with. Might as well focus on efficiency improvements of the systems they have already. Covering the wheels does work but air curtain aerodynamic wizardry does most of that and people like the look more of exposed wheels. In a practical sense, having 20 inch wheels is worse than a 18-17", yet that's what people want and buy. The 1st gen Honda Insight did not sell very well, even though it was a fuel efficiency marvel.

    All you can do is try it. I'm 6'4 and bought one, I love the car. The roofline is pretty low but it really depends on how tall your torso is. I have longer legs and you can really stretch out in this car. I have the seat dropped all the way down and lean back just a bit and it's perfect for me, it's really an amazing car.

    Really loving this from Hyundai. I went from a Hyundai Sonata to a Tesla M3P. I still love the design language that Hyundai is going with. I would be very tempted by an N variant, but would need Hyundai to fix some non-starters for me. Namely, one pedal braking not being a default setting? So one of the best things about an electric car? Super easy fix in software IMO. Then Carplay and Android Auto being required to be plugged in? Requiring plugging in on say an Elantra might be okay, but not on a car that could cost 60K USD. Everything else though is very well thought out!
