Guys -- Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who developed Jungian psychology in the first half of the 20th century.12 His theory suggested that archetypes were universal patterns and images that are part of the collective unconscious. Jung believed that we inherit these archetypes much like we inherit instinctive patterns of behavior.3 Jungian psychotherapy is a thorough, analytical approach to talk therapy that seeks to bring balance and union between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. Jung believed that the unconscious is a source of wisdom and guidance that can help encourage psychological growth.2 He created some of the best-known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, and extraversion and introversion.4 Jung argued that humans deal with the reality of the shadow in four ways: denial, projection, integration, and transmutation. During individuation, the individual becomes more attentive to dreams, increases their psychic awareness, explores the world of religion and spirituality, and questions the assumptions of societal norms.

The song is about evolving into a higher state of consciousness. As a species we are currently in a chaotic state. We currently have 44 and 2 chromosomes. The reference is to us evolving into a symbiotic state, as a species, with 46 and 2 chromosomes.

They play all the instruments and a young teenage girl crushes the lyrics. They all crush it but the drumming and videography is outstanding. The kids in the video are from a music class. A few of them, including the singer, later formed a band call 'Saving Escape' and they are making original music now, I bought the album. The cover video is posted by O'Keefe Music Foundation and the video name is "Kids Cover 46 and 2 by Tool / O'Keefe Music Foundation".

The next step of evolution would likely bring about a cosmic conscious where the chromosome count would be 48, or 46 & 2. The songs heavy focus on 'shadow' is derived from Carl Jung's theories. The shadow is basically everything about that is unseen that you are uncomfortable with or hate.

Quick layman explanation of the song (at least my interpretation). First "The Shadow". Very basically, Karl Jung's theorized that our mind was divided in several parts, one being the Shadow, the place where our fears, insecurities and traumas reside. Now, the songs talks about evolution (there are many references to snakes shedding skin) and basically it says that to change, to evolve you have to face your Shadow, acknowledge it, recognize it, assume it and integrate it into who you are. Now, the forty-six & 2 part. Our cells are composed of 46 chromosomes, containing our whole DNA. Those 46 chromosomes are organized in pairings, so 23. Now there is a pairing that is special because it's the one that determine our biological gender, it's the pairing XX for women and XY for men. When a biologist speaks of 44+2 instead of 46, the "+2" refers to that special pairing. So in the song, the narrator says "forty-six & 2" just ahead of me. I don't think it's a direct reference to biological evolution (going from 44+2 to 46+2), but I think he uses this representation of biological evolution as a metaphor for psychological, mental and ethical evolution.

The vocals being mixed low is an artistic choice, vocals part of the song instead of over the instrumentals, and despite all the commenters who believe this is about Carl Jung, it's not, it's about evolution, it's the count of chromosomes and autosomes of a potentially evolutionary next step that will be more aligned with sacred geometry per Drunvalo Melchizedek.

Not sure why alot of people can’t hear the lyrics/vocals in the main sections of TOOL songs? There are parts of songs where MJK is whispering or speaking the lyrics which can be hard to hear so I get that but the body of the song I hear him clearly and don’t have issues understanding what he’s saying. I believe I have learned how to listen to TOOL songs and I’m used to MJKs vocals blending in as almost another instrument and that’s where I believed people run into issues hearing the vocals that blend so well with the music.

While there is a certain meaning to be made from this song, the meaning-making process focuses solely on the lyrics and vocals. This takes away from the overall aesthetic. You cannot listen to Tool as one does Hip-Hop or Pop which focuses so heavily on the vocals. Tool is far more set in its rhythms and poly-rhythms. Listen to the interplay between Bass, Drums, and Guitar and imagine the vocals as another instrument. Even the lead guitar often dabbles in rhythmic patterns rather than vocalization, only peaking up to take the lead every now and again. Otherwise, the band often switches roles, where the drums lead and guitar and bass support, or bass leads and drums and guitar support. Lyrically, this is essentially about Jungian psychology, the Shadow being the area where repressed feelings and desires go. The "2" in 46 and 2 represent the sex chromosomes and the song's overall meaning about evolving and changing biologically and psychologically. However, the meaning is secondary to the overall song. Tool is a different kind of listening. They will not meet your expectations; Tool's music demands you to change your perspective.

To best understand Tool, you need to think of each song as an episode in a series, where the album is a season.

Tool makes you smarter. First you just like the song, then you have to do research to figure out what the lyrics mean. 😜

46 and 2 has something to do with chromosomes.

The vocal is low in the mix on purpose. There are times when Maynard likes to see himself as more of an instrument. That said, always always always pull up the lyrics-the better to hear as well as understand.

Basically, it's about wanting to evolve beyond what we are now.

A popular belief is that the song title refers to an idea first conceived by Carl Jung. But this seems in error as no relevant citations to Jung on such an idea seem to be available. Such an idea is further attributed to Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a disharmonious state.[3][4] The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek. Additionally, it may refer to the desire to experience change through the "shadow", an idea that represents the parts of one's psyche, and identity that one hates, fears and represses; this exists as a recurring theme in the work of Carl Jung.[5]

For all those who are applying their lyrics solely to Jungian philosophies and such, there is a video out there that provides not only the lyrics but the explanation to them. These involve certain philosophies but the main point is 46 & 2. These are the chromosomal ratios that separate some people from others and that express themselves over time. There are 44 & 2s and 42 & 2s, each seeing the world in fundamentally different ways. What he seems to be singing about is his experiencing the transition from one to another and the revelations revealed. I always wondered before this why they didn't just call it "Forty-eight."
