Let's face it: more and more Chromebooks are arriving every day, and finding the perfect device that will balance performance and affordability can be tough. Back when there were only a couple new Chromebooks introduced each year, it was far less difficult to sort the more-capable devices from the rest of the pack. These days, thought, that task is far from simple, and Google is looking to do something about that fact with what they are calling Chromebook Plus: a new category of Chromebook that simply delivers more of what you need at the price you want.

There are a couple of things I find very interesting with this announcement. Firstly I love the idea of setting a minimum standard for a category. It is great for developers to have something to target, it is great for manufacturers to also have a spec they can target and innovate around, mostly it is great for the end user who can be guaranteed a minimum standard and user experience. Secondly it is interesting to see the vote of confidence for the x86_64 Architecture. Ever since Apple went with ARM with their M Series Apple Silicon, I felt like there was pressure for everything running on a Battery to go ARM. Intel and especially AMD have responded well to that Pressure. Lastly I feel like there has been also pressure for everything running on a battery to be a cloud device. Personally I don't think we are there yet. Google learnt that with Stadia. The cost of the internet is still very prohibitive and in many regions the quality of the internet connection is still not as good. Also Cloud services are still not affordable enough, the cost of cloud storage for example is not as accessible to the majority compared to local storage. Which is why I love that one of the hardware minimum specs is 128GB. 8GB RAM is also the right minimum requirement for local processing although I hope an upgrade to 16GB can be offered at an affordable price. Windows has support for Native Android Apps and the Microsoft Store has gotten better too. Google still have an advantage with the App Store but the gap is closing in. I just saw some news not sure if it is confirmed that Microsoft is planning a Windows 12 version that is inspired by Chrome OS....Bravo Google. I think these Chromebooks will sell well and suspect the dawn of a serious push for Chromebooks more mainstream.
Thanks so much for the update and can't wait to hear more! I just started looking for a new Chromebook since I just hit my end of automatic updates. I started using Chromebooks about 5-6 years ago and really like the integration with my Pixel. You guys are great and thanks for the work you all do. I appreciate it!
Standards are great! The more the merrier! The joy of finding the right standard USB cable! (Actually, this one makes sense - my machine does hit most of the specs, because that is what I needed - it had to cross-compile from the linux container. The actual chrome stuff works fine)

Bu5 you'll be left out in the cold with all the Chromebook landfill if you don't have 12th gen Intel, 😢
Thanks for explaining the new standards. With the exception of the lousy camera and the lack of a privacy cover for that camera, my Acer Spin 713 v.2 is still meeting my needs. This was one of my best tech purchases.
Great News! Thank you for explaining the details 👍
Exciting times for sure. Been a Chromebook user for 5+ years. Asus and Lenovo 5, happy to hear we should be receiving the updates and perks as well. Thank you for the information.

How is Chrome OS for you? Do you use it as your main computer for doing work and such?
having a base line is important! but, why would I want to buy a 500USD chromebook over other 500USD (or maybe a bit more) laptop?
Very interesting & glad they've finally clarified the upgraded platform standards. (I wonder if I'll regret buying a refurbished 2022 Acer Spin 714.)
Thanks for the news. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these Chromebook Plus computers.
I've been browsing Best Buy, Lenovo, and Amazon, looking at new (2023) Chromebooks. I have been in the market for one for at least three or four months, but I have been hesitant to make a decision because I figured I would wait until the big sales events occur in the latter part of this year. This video just gave me another reason to procrastinate. I'm curious to see what Asus and Acer will have to offer under this new umbrella. HP is generally out of my price range, but I have had a decent experience with Acer in the past and they seem to be a little more consumer friendly, or at least they were. My birthday is near the end of October so I might be able to treat myself with a new toy at that time!
My current Samsung Chromebook 2 (2020) is starting to slow down, and I really don't want to have to powerwash, since the extended warranty is up next April. I was shopping around for a new one for the holidays (or just after with the tax return). I'm now almost disputing just putting it on the credit card after seeing your summary! These look amazing!
Well, rip prices in the EU for good chromebooks. They already dont make sense price wise. The Chromebook Plus title will be a good way to ask for even more money. (Seriously, a Spin 714 with the i3 costs as much as a Macbook Air with an M1 Chip).

@YumeFox

Yeah, I'm also looking at the suggested machines and EU pricing is just, idiotic. 800 dollars, 900 dollars. Nobody should just invest that kind of money on a Chromebook. Cheaper Chromebooks tend to have Intel Pentium CPUs, which nobody should buy in 2023 any more. I appreciate what Google's trying to do here. And I think it's an easier way for non-tech consumers to distinguish the bad hardware from the decent hardware. But I still feel like in this market, Chromebooks just make no financial sense. Those Chromebook Plus machines really need to start coming down to the sub-500-euro price point.

Same. I have always wanted to get a Chromebook cause of its simplicity but at these prices, they don't make much sense. They are more expensive than more powerful and modern Windows laptops.

You have really good content here, you can be proud of what you do.
Great info, after the initial update to ChromeOS 117 even my (very) low end Lenovo Chromebook is performing better than ever. I am not wasting any money on a superior model just yet. Before you know it you can get a Chromebook Ultra for less money. I love my low end model because it uses only 5-15 Watts on a standard USB-C Charger. Runs 10+ hours on a charge and has the best chromecast features ever seen. It all just works. Even the OS footprint has reduced so more SSD space available for Linux and Android apps.
I was considering getting a HP Dragonfly Pro based on your review around 6 months ago. Is that still a good one to go with or will these Chromebook Plus models be better options? Or should something else Chromebook altogether be considered 6 months on?
😳😮 Nice! Just in time for Christmas
Superb video, full of content without wasting any second .👌👍✍️
Very cool! While I primarily use a MacBook for work & home, my wife is a 'ChromeBook Junkie'. She's going to be really glad to hear about the new standards & features for the Plus models. I use most of the Google tools including Bard AI on my MacBook & iphone.
I'm using an old HP Chromebook and this is something I would look forward to. All looks good especially on the hardware and the Chromebook Plus OS itself can be a game changer for users like me. And it's a good time to change since my HP Chromebook received its last ChromeOS update last month. Bummer.
I highly appreciate the information on market availability outside of US in your video. 👍
Very informative video. Thank you Sir.
Thank for your information.
Hello ! Appreciate your video so much ! Question: Are all Android apps able to function properly on all of these Plus devices, or should I get a Chromebook that indicates it does, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with the following - CPU MediaTek Kompanio 520 GPU ARM Mali-G52 2EE MC2 Thanks in advance for your reply !
Watching this on a Chromebook plus, they're pretty great.
Noticeably good audio quality on this vid.
Need a 17" Chromebook Plus!
I don’t see any mention of ssd vs eMMC but I hope the former is a requirement
This is absolutely incredible! This really motivates me to want to get a Chromebook Plus model now. Question is, which one...

the fact is this tiered chromebook pyramid has been around for a couple of years just not promoted here in America until now. Google already had chromebook, chromebook plus and ultra chromebooks (hp chromebook x360 for example). I dont understand why robbie is just now promoting this.
Your video still clear even at 240p, what camera do you use?
Just ordered the Acer Chromebook 516 ge after watching your video I didn't particularly want a gaming Chromebook but the specs and build and the price I got it for made it hopefully a good choice. Fingers crossed I got an A rated returns with one year's warranty for £478 here in the UK. Fingers crossed it's tidy when I receive it. I must admit I also wish it came with a touchscreen 😢 Your videos are great keep up the good work 👍 I'm now on the lookout for a quality but budget friendly mouse any suggestions?
Thanks Robbie!
Thanks for providing the update. I hope they are priced competitively in India.
Will the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook be included in the plus category?
Chrome OS needs windows like app versions of office 365 if it wants to be a serious competitor. It's the standard software people use for office tasks like spreadsheeting, word processing, powerpoints etc and while the online version does the job it doesn't have the more specific functions that you sometimes need or as good as file management as the app version of onedrive

For the consumer market, paying for an office suite would be useless, if only people were properly informed: any free suite would allow them to do the same things. For the enterprise market, it always depends on what you want to do: for example, many of my clients are surprised when they see what Google Workspace can do at a fraction of the cost compared to Office+Teams+Sharepoint.

Australia is finally getting some Chromebook love from Google! We're lucky if we even get 12month old models here most of the time.
This Asus Chromebook plus cx34 that appears in the video, can the RAM memory be increased?
I may been getting a Chromebook soon. This sounds interesting.
Thats what I'm talking about😆!!!! Please make a 2- in 1 Chromebook plus Great video. 👍👍
I bought a new Chromebook plus now. Cant wait for it to arrive. My old one while still very fast for what I use it for, is almost 5 times slower in single core, and almost 7 times faster in multicore lol. Same amount of memory (8GB) but thats been more than enough for me so far :)
I dont think this direction is the one Chromebooks should go. It creates an even further nieche where consumers and sellers just cant differentiate right of the bat what differences there are, and why they are. Chromebooks should all be multi talented beasts with even more functionality added in the future. There are still so many things missing on chromebooks people just expect a laptop to do. Like blu ray or dvd playability (with usb connection ofc), more usb c slots, the option to turn off tablet mode or the option to turn off touch screen or keyboard alone, etc etc
love your channel
do these devices support usb4 or even just usb-c display out?
I have an HP 14C-CC0013DX. Will this model get Chromebook plus goodies?
In these days, I was analyzing to buy a Chromebook and I saw one on Costco online that caught my attention. It was the Lenovo Flex 5i with 8GB of RAM, i3-1215U (6-core) Processor, and 256GB of NVMe solid-state storage, 1080p camera, and WUXGA IPS LCD (1920 x 1200) 300-Nits Display, for $379 on special, with a $120 discount from its original price of $499.99. I was about to buy it, but then I thought, I'll wait a bit longer to see if the price drops even further since we're nearing the next month for Black Friday. This Chromebook has practically the same specifications as the Plus, and I don't think I'll buy the Plus just for the sake of it saying "Plus" when the Lenovo from Costco has the same specifications. Supposedly, as you mentioned in the video, they will update the software to Plus for those who don't have the Plus model but have these specifications. As soon as Costco puts it on special again, I'll definitely buy it. Does anyone already have it? How has it been for you?

@chrome unboxed I have two questions for you that I've never been able to find when I google chromebooks. One is How do I know which chromebook can run android apps? and if there are any limitations on what they can run. 2nd question can chromebook browsers like chrome run browser extensions from the webstore?
Full HD with IPS has been a MUST HAVE for many years now !
Can we expect the 128GB minimum drive will be proper NVME drives or can they still stick them with eMMC slow drives?
This is very exciting stuff. ❤
Will there be casual gaming on the CB+ devices.
Nice, I really hope they come to New Zealand but I wont be holding my breath
Now I hope for a "Chromebook Pro" with even better Chromebooks :)
I have an Acer Chromebook CB3-431 from 2016 that is a year past its freshness date & a little slow. I recently reviewed new Chromebooks & was surprised by the sheer number. I researched processor types & settled on Ryzen 3 3250C then purchased an Acer Recertified Spin 514, at a 50% discount. I'm very happy with it. It's much faster to boot & to open app & tabs! It appears to meet the Plus specs. Plus should make it easier to select a Chromebook but don't ignore previous models! Cheers!!

I just bought a recertified Acer Chromebook 516 GE at 50% discount and I love it. I didn't buy it for Gaming, I bought it for the specs and it did not disappoint. I like that it's all aluminum chassis so I feel it's protected. I think buying a recertified by the original manufacturer helps move them along. Computers can be reused again by others not fortunate enough to be able to buy new. I just paid off my Asus CX5601 which is another good Chromebook. I'm giving it to my niece and I'm sure she will enjoy it as much as I have. My backup is my 2020 MacBook Air with M1 chip. It pays to have an extra laptop just in case something happens. I also had the Acer CB3-431 which was very good too and had loud speakers.

@@maryajaniak2896 we must think very similarly. I have a MacBook Air M1 and have been craving a larger display for consuming media and productivity. I didn't want to buy a budget windows laptop because they generally have crap battery life, displays, and performance because windows is a heavier OS. after many hours of researching I stumbled upon the acer 516 GE and at 16 inches with a high res display I immediately purchased it on sale at $450. I'm picking it up today and I'm crossing my fingers that it will live up to the hype

This looks great and might tempt me to switch from Mac! It's just a shame in the UK (even in London) you can't easily try out Google kit whereas I can walk into an Apple Store anytime. BTW great channel and really useful videos delivered in a straightforward way!
Not a fan of fragmented apps for different models. All this new software would run fine on any intel 11th gen for example but won’t be available.
Looking forward to seeing those 3 flips compared on your channel.

They need more software. It's very limited for people to switch. I mean for windows user, gaming, editing, browsing and video call is what they do. But these options are so limited that people have hard time switching including myself.

I disagree. I think Chromebooks compete on price. Once Chromebooks become as expensive as Windows laptops most people will choose a Windows laptop. Plus many businesses will never switch from Windows, as the saying goes, no IT manager will ever get fired for recommending Windows.
@renaldy1234

You would need to be fully immersed in the Chromebook ecosystem for someone to believe that both small and large companies' upper management would replace their macOS or Windows systems with a Chromebook. Most of the features can already be accessed through the Chrome browser. Personally, as a data analyst, most of my work relies on software that's only available on Windows or Mac. So no chrome os would never be a threat to windows I'd be really interested to see a video from Chrome Unboxed showing how he edits his KZread videos on a Chromebook!

@@renaldy1234 Yeah I agree. Chromebooks are great, I love mine, but it's a different niche. Plus prices won’t really be going up if this brand starts at $399, my chromebook from 2 years ago would just need a 12th gen processor instead of eleventh and a slightly better webcam and I’d have a chromebook plus.

Any business or professional who has been tied to a legacy OS, is going to be doobies about changing over to a new OS, such as Chrome OS, no matter how efficient and effective that new OS is. Chrome OS has gained dominance in a few niche markets, such as education. But it's clearly no near term 'threat' in the overall PC market. But it is nice to see it continuing to gain greater functionality. And the original expression was “Nobody ever gets fired for buying IBM”', whoever they are? lol (In terms of the PC market)

I've been using a chromebook(s) from home for the past year and a half, openvpn and ipsec vpn works well. I also take my chromebook into the office as well ... Office 365 web works well (I'm doing teams and outlook) , remmina remote desktop works well for accessing my remote windows and mac VMs , I have vscode installed for local editing and the ssh terminal again to access my remote linux VMs .... so I don't understand the need for a big test, i'm in that big test day in and day out.. Just ask yourself how many apps do you use for your day to day work, how many are webbased, and how many need specific windows apps that can be installed on those remote 'office' based VMs.

Google should think about getting together again the Chromebook Pixelbook Team to develop a successor of the original Pixelbook, Pixelbook Go, and Pixelbook Slate with the Pixelbook Plus tag on it, those were great quality devices, that yet in 2023, work perfectly with CrOS v117, which just got benefit with the 10-year EAU extension until 2027.
