As an ex-competitive MMA fighter (before it became a commercial enterprise, back in the Bloodsport days) this song tears a deep wound in my heart. It's like a journey into an arrogant believer's soul...age is a harsh bitch, one that can't be tamed nor contained. There comes a time we must understand our day has passed...a new generation of warrior who is in every way better than you has come. Rest in peace with all you have done and achieved, the good and the bad. Maynard's BBJ background shines thru in this masterpiece, I truly believe every ex-fighter or ex-forces person will get this song. Our time is done, let us rest in its successes and failures, and rejoice the new generation taking our places. X

After a long absence from the "scene" and getting older we bcum sumwat fearful that we aren't as good as we once were. I imagine they felt a bit apprehensive if their music would still be relevant n as widely accepted? Their "shield" (the burdens of touring perhaps?) getting harder on their tired bones. I think no matter how good we are we all hv sum insecurities due to ego. But "we all" know they overcame the ego self. (46+2) lol. Yep 👍 spiral out brother... ❤

11000000000 percent. Like so much if maynard's lyrics, it is likely written for him personally, but in a way that multiple walks of life can relate to. Aging with a desire to continue pushing to succeed at the highest levels is such a, if not universal, widely desired concept. Came here to make the same comment and was happy to find yours at the top!

I broke the first time I heard this. Multiple major ortho reconstruction and organ surgeries complicated by neuropathy and getting harder to recover with every one at age 68. Significant daily pain while trying to keep the game face on for loved ones when you just wanna face plant and quit, but don't apparently have the quit gene in you. Knowing your wife can see the struggle and you can never thank her adequately for what she's been through with you. Only she and Jesus fully get it. Thanks for your service and keep pushing on. We got this.

This song is based on a Warrior‘s life however, this is a song that we all will feel in very intimate ways the older we get. I got into tool when I was 21 in 1993, but I’m now 50 and this song has very important meaning to me because it’s about, the mortality of life, we all must end, and it’s a difficult thing for everyone. At the age of 50 I start feeling more and more every year of the value of my life and how much less of it I now have then I once did all those years ago.

Man, this song hits home for me, 55 years old, still struggling to stay on top of my game...life, career, health, keeping up with the new generations. Its a battle, but cant give up! I think the lyrics refer to the aging of the band and the struggle to remain relevant and consequential after 30+ years in a world of changing music and younger generations. These guys were in their early 20's when they formed Tool. Now in their 50's like me! I get it.

Thank you for this reaction to a nice song. Warriors still want to stay and live for their older years. Good to be young at heart and in your mind too. It helps as you get tired faster when older. Struggle to remain active as long as you can. Your speed might slow down, but continue moving forward in this race we call life. One step and one day at a time to achieve your goals.

Just to add more context to the lyrics, Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer \ looter in the early 1500's. He landed in America around what is today St Augustine FL. Besides searching for gold and riches, and is said to have been searching for the "mythical fountain of youth".

  • @kennethcrenshaw8359

Adrenochrome. Fountain of youth is a euphemism for children crying. TOOL released this right before the Plandemic. They changed their logo to a syringe for this album. They fuckin knew. This album was a warning. Psychopathy? Don't you dare point that at me.

Descending is my fave off this album, the music takes me to another level and the lyrics warn us to arm ourselves not with guns but for the fight to save our planet and our entire species from all the destruction we've caused, both to the environment and the earth and to ourselves as conscious beings who can and must do better. That's my take on it anyway!

What I interpreted from the lyrics, sometimes younger generations tend to ignore or discount advice or input from older people? Thus the lyrics about trying to remain relevant. Also, Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer/looter, who landed on what is now St Augustine FL. As well as searching for gold and riches, supposedly he was also in search of the, "mystical fountain of youth".

  • @kennethcrenshaw8359

Adrenachrome. Harvested from tears. The fountain of youth was a play on the tears of children who had either been abused or were threatened with it. DeLeon was no hero.

Hoping he does the live version on Danny's drumcam. This album grew on me as well, though I still say, for me, it's my least fave album from them, was hoping it would have had more songs. But that said, Invincible may be my fave song from them, and that's not an easy grab for top song....but no other song made me cry 1st time I heard it.

@@CYRUS363 As a drummer myself, who has long been inspired and influenced by Danny's style, I still think the first listen of Pneuma should be the album version. Everyone on YT seems to react to the drumcam version. While it's amazing to witness such a skilled musician so fully in his element, I think reactors are missing out on the maximum impact of the album version's calculated craftsmanship.
