This Is A Risky Move In The Music Industry.
Ойын-сауық
This is a risky move. Sam Fender has posted a statement stating that he is cancelling his upcoming shows in order to look after his mental health due to feeling burnt out. It's always a difficult and risky decision to cancel anything in this industry. Momentum is everything and you feel like you need to keep going and working no matter what, or else your career will end. I'm very proud that he's prioritising his health so he can come back better, and keep writing great songs. What do you think? Obviously this is a privilege a lot of people cannot afford, but if you can, should you take it?

Touring has a lot of overhead, and that overhead isn't going down in cost.
I'm 63 and Sam's lyrics on "17 Going Under" just blew me away with their honesty, I went right back to remembering my difficulties as a teenager trying to get a grip on life. Sam is a true songwriter, you can see the young fans at his shows live through his lyrics and there is a massive emotional connection. Great stuff, thanks Justin.
I find Sam Fender completely refreshing in a industry that seems increasing vacuous. The fact that he actually has something to say at such a relatively young age is pretty remarkable, and taking time out to look after his mental health only serves to make me admire him more. More power to you Sam.

Aye, more power to him. I'd rather my favourite artists cancelled a show I was looking forward to that run themselves into the ground. People dismiss mental health issues too easily when honestly it's the hardest thing and deadly

I saw Sam Fender supporting The Killers at London Emirates recently in June 2022, he came out and was so so nervous bless him. He said it was his first arena (60k of us there) and he was bricking it. He never looked up at the crowd once, but he absolutely smashed the performance. I just wanted to give him a big auntie hug. But I suppose it wasn’t just nervousness
Good on him. A sensible move. Saw the Avicci doc the other day. Felt so sorry for the guy. He cancelled a lot of shows and I thoughts he'd got a grip of the situation but sadly that all ended tragically. Good luck Sam. Hope you get through this👍
"I was too scared to hit him, but I'd hit I'm in a heartbeat now" Such a great lyric and clearly relatable. Live, it has a life of its own. Glad he's taking time off. He's a genuine guy.
Couldn’t agree more, Justin! You can’t serve others from an empty cup. Mental health matters no matter who you are or what business you’re in. I think Sam’s made a brave decision to take the time he needs to relax, reset and sort himself out. It’s clear that he cares about his fans and didn’t make the decision lightly, but also that he cares about his band and the people around him as much as they care about him. Hopefully he’ll come back rejuvenated and all the better for it 🥰
Good topic Justin, important to highlight such things, people need to remember we’re all human.
Hi Justin! I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do! I've been deeper down than I'd ever been before for the past six months (I'm Ukrainian and all the weird bits of my psyche have taken on a whole new dimention as my existential dread suddenly became very real). Even though I'm not in any danger, I've been in all sorts of weird places mentally, and to my great sorrow I thought I'd felt music leave me. I felt like I could never care about music as much as I used to, and I never felt like singing anymore. I kinda thought I lost it for good, my voice just didn't work. The handful of shitty sad songs I've scratched together in the last months, I came up with entirely in my head without ever singing or playing them. But ever since crying my eyeballs raw during the Taylor Hawkins tribute live stream, I've been binging your videos and finding myself singing along with " Juuuuustin Hawkins rides agaain. Again." ever more spiritedly and humming stuff, thinking about song structures and chord progressions, and I feel like like maybe I might annoy my friends with some music trivia sometime soon. Thank you for being so open and lovely and a true inspiration ❤️ I hope this humble super thanks finds you well. Music is the savior 🙏🏻

I hope you 'find your voice' again soon, sounds like it's making it's way back to you and I bet it will be both different and better. I found Justin through Pat Finnerty, and both of them really helped me through some of my own darkness. I'm glad you are safe. I cannot imagine what I'd do if a war broke out here. I honestly don't know how I'd deal with it or even if I could. You guys are brave! Keep creating, stay well and safe, and if you're ever in Chicago, I'll buy you a drink or two.

Polly, I will be thinking of you are hoping all comes good for you and Ukraine. As a person who has been in a deep dark hole once in my life, I found following my instinct was the best thing to do. 'Pushing through' and 'never giving up' is pop armchair psychology crap, that just leads you into a darker hole. Get in touch with what your heart and body is telling you to do, then your mind will be clearer. Don't overthink things. Rest. Sleep. Time. These things are your friend.

Thank you for having this discussion. Self care is so important. Especially when it comes to mental health. It's really good to look out for yourself, know your limits and take great care when needed.
What a lovely video and just another example of how good this channel is. Honest, deep, thoughtful and genuine.
Yea may we all recover to have more good times, thanks again for the ride, Justin!
As a fellow north-east…er 🤔, I feel quite happy to see this reaction to Sam and commend him and his crew for making the decision and declaring so with such a nice and well-rounded message. Also love that you like Dizzee Rascal too! Didn’t think he would be your cup of tea. Holiday is one of my favourite songs ever really. Really livens me up whenever I hear it.
I do enjoy your channel, it's like a Ray of sun shine, thank you Justin. Mental health matters, I've always got time to listen and talk as I realise if someone is reaching out to you, it's not done lightly. We all matter, a few minutes out of your day for someone could make all the difference. It's so healthy to listen and talk, all the very best, 👍👍👍👊✌️. Ps, I have to wait for my daughter to down load the telegram app as I'm a learning techno phob, lol! Been following your channel for a while now and it definitely one of my KZread staples, thank you Justin. 👍👍👍👊✌️.
The management team should take a hard look at themselves, as regular breaks should be factored in. No one can work 100% 24/7, that’s why relatives who care for family get into problems, as there is no support for them.
We all need rest! Cheers Justin!!
I think you guys were awesome together. Great Tribute concert I watched it twice. I enjoy watching your podcast and sunny Southern California Huntington Beach
I really admire artists who do this because it must be difficult when you know that many of your fans will be disappointed, but your health has to come first.
I would go with it. Shows he has the right people around him. Makes me think of the many who succumbed to the pressures of this industry, lives cut short. Good move. Total respect!
I found this video really insightful and helpful, thank you Justin
Just found your channel and I'm glad I did. You are brilliant!
I’ve been watching this channel for a while but never commented Mr Hawkins, I admire the way you conduct yourself and I’m always impressed by how fast your ears are, it’s no wonder you pitch your vocals so well.. keep up your great works and god bless..
Playing that long game and preserving your mental and emotional health is best for not only him and his band but also anybody that's lucky enough to see him. Lads a good song writer and a good artist all round. Props
Quite sincerely, it must be hard being on the road/away from home and familiar surroundings for serious lengths of time several times every year. I imagine finding friends on the road, people you trust and can connect with in different cities, would make some difference. Good for Sam. We all need to follow our instinct.
You have to admire someone that is willing to take a step back and put themselves and their wellbeing first when under so much pressure to continue and press on. Many artists have been down this road and turned to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.

I love your humor, knowledge and interesting slant on music. Always been a, The Darkness, fan but your personal slant on topics is much appreciated and addictively entertaining while being highly informative. I really dig your demeanor and positive viewpoint, such a refreshing alternative to the current status quo. Bravo
Staying afloat in the entertainment industry can be very difficult. If you are working band it usually takes all youve got to break through one door and, as Justin said, thats usually when the real work begins… youre in a cycle of continuously needing to generate boundless energy and inspiration which, even though so much fun, can take a serious toll on your mental and physical well being. Its just difficult to always be “on.” And given how financially insecure the industry is, it can be even harder to take a meaningful break so burnout is a constant threat. We just have to support each other as a community and know that good work will follow you and, even if it feels impossible, prioritize your well being always
Thanks Justin, a worthy subject eloquently presented as ever by your good self. Good luck to Sam, he recognised his issues and took the right decision. We're all human, whether we work in an office or fill stadiums...
I'd rather have my favorite musicians take 10 years off, or retire if they need to, than die by their own hand like so many people I've really admired have done. I'm glad he's taking some time for himself. Being a musician is hard work. All your friends think it's just one big party. It's amazing how sad and lonely you can feel in a room full of partying people.
Good on him, the music ‘business’ seems to have learnt nothing from the many casualties over the years so artists need to be aware enough of these things to make tough decisions. I hope he takes the time he needs and comes back in great health. 👏🏻
I hope it works out in the hope that it allows more artists to take well deserved breaks.
There is a HUGE issue with record labels owning talent and rinsing them for what they can get, it need majorly rethought on how it works because we see this type of thing all the time now with large touring acts. Sad
It’s a shame that most of us need vast amounts of savings to take a break from work 👎 I’ve worked with many people who would benefit from this but just can’t afford to
Great post Justin. I hope Sam kicks back a little & enjoys some of the money he’s earned before heading back on the road ❤🎸
You've grown on me Justin lol, loving this channel buddy
I was looking forward to seeing him in Vancouver but this is the right call. I hope he comes back stronger.

Thank you Justin and well put. All the best to Sam Fender 🎸😂
Great that you’ve highlighted this. Sam is an unbelievably talented individual and hope he gets the required space and time to rest. 🤟🏻
Mental health is so incredibly important. If you need a "mental health holiday" by all means, take it! Be here now. 🤟🤘
Good on him. There have been countless casualties in the music industry trapped and contracted to fulfil obligations as the cycle of touring and publicising burns them out. Many using drink and drugs to try and numb the pain and get through it all. It is good that he has recognised that he is not in a happy place and needs to step back to save himself.
Being a professional musician - i.e., being paid for your performance - is a business. And the world of business seems to be populated by two broad types: those who are content to have something like a corner shop that provides a steady comfortable living for the owner and and fair wages for employees, and those intent on creating an ever-expanding empire. I don't know what they teach in business schools these days, but it seems like there are too many of the latter and not nearly enough of the former. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with being the former type as a professional musician, and having a long and productive career that doesn't destroy anyone, even if it doesn't fill Wembley I would rather see this sort of news item from Sam Fender, than a news item announcing his death from suicide, or drug/liquor-assisted car crash. He's young and can still have a long and productive career making music, even if he isn't filling Wembley.
Sam is a proper sound lad and I'm so glad he's making his mental health a priority. It must be overwhelming gaining as much traction as he has over the past year. Needs a break and come back better than ever, more artists need to take care of themselves
Good for him, he's doing the right thing. Back in the day, he's I am that old, Neil Diamond took 5 years out to go into therapy and spend time with his young family. He came back stronger than ever. We all should try to know our limits and take that time out if possibld. Thanks for reminding us Justin.
Fairly new to Sam's stuff, saw his Glastonbury set on tv and loved it. He seems to have a good down to earth attitude and hope he remains so. The first I saw of him was a documentary he did about Alan Hull of Lindisfarne which I could watch over and over, BBC4 showed it. Fucking brilliant, Sam was/is in awe of the guy. I believe a live album is coming out and hope in the meantime he can refresh and come back creating the music he wants with his band who are his mates, I believe! Well done to him for taking time out from the machine
Thankfully the times have changed, and there is a growing understanding among the public for mental health issues. It's great that you take the opportunity to start a wholseome discussion about artist exploitation as well as the darker sides of artist-fan relationships. Artists and performers of any genre are human beings and by no means just products or commodities, and hence should receive the same respect and treatment as any hard working person. Plus, exposing yourself on stage and in public night after night as performers do, really takes a huge toll on anybody's mental health, even if the artist is an extrovert. But many artists are rather on the neurodivergent side and actually introverts. Just think of Chester Bennington, and of course, Kurt Cobain.
Love your cow mess amp behind you kidda, shitting out solid gold
Hope Sam’s okay and hope 2 months is enough time for him. He should take the time he needs to get well ❤
I absolutely love your jacket.
My fave music related film is ‘still crazy’…..I’m convinced if this film was made today, you could 100% pull off the part of the lead singer Ray (played by bill nighy)..an original and inspired yet badly underated soundtrack to this movie… if you were to play the lead singer ray, which actors would you want to play the rest of your band which has the amazing name….strange fruit!! I really think this movie is right up your street!! 70’s rock band, reunited in 90’s and some amazing and emotional guitar solos
The lad deserves time off he works bloody hard at what he does. I'm confident he's going to come back stronger so good on him 🤘
Recently watched the new ELVIS film having not known a great deal about him really. He was run into the ground and totally overworked by his management company…so so sad to see. Good for you Sam Fender and your team for doing the right thing and recognising when you need to take a break. Hats off 👍

I wish it was the norm in all fields of work, to be honest. Imagine if we were taught at a young age to recognise our own individual signs of impending burnout and develop strategies to combat it. We're encouraged to develop our careers as if it's some towering citadel which we cannot take a moment's rest from building. When in truth you could take a year off or more. The sky would not fall in. Well done to Sam Fender for being a great role model, and I hope he's not hassled to go back too soon.
I believe he is brave and honest.....Ciao Justin
Fantastic blog all round. I saw Sam Fender by accident supporting Neil young and Bob Dylan. He wasn't out of place that night, and followed his career since.
You should make a reaction video with The Linda Lindas. Growing up might be this year's best record.
It’s funny you mention Sam fender. Saw him at my home town festival at victorious festival. And I felt it wasn’t a strong performance if anything felt like he didn’t wanna be there. Production and SoundWise spot on, but very much lack of energy and character coming from him as a headliner. Few other people felt the same watching him too. Maybe all a bit too soon for his early career. Especially from the machine of the music industry but can be so demanding and ruthless. Cheers Jordan
Hi Justin, Great episode as usual! I would love to know what you think about John Mayer! thnx
Stunning top
I agree completely that if someone is burnt out and their mental health is suffering they should take time out to look after themselves, but for most of the population they can’t take that time out, they have a mortgage to pay and family to feed. They just have to struggle on in the hope that one day it will get better, help from the NHS is poor to non existent for mental health other than anti depressants. I imagine being a successful performer has huge pressures and for him to step away for a bit is entirely appropriate. But for most people to take a similar step back from whatever is troubling them is not financially possible.
JUSTIN I GIVE YOU A THUMBS UP ON EVERY VIDEO BEFORE I EVEN KNOW WHAT ITS ABOUT. 😎💪🏻
How many artists in the past were literally worked into the ground. Touring is a hard life, and has taken too many away from us, and their loved ones..

My suggestion would be Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing or English Summer Rain. And by The Knife - anything really, I think they are absolutely brilliant.
100% great for him to do this and do it with such grace and dignity.
Has to look after himself. Ps talking of Ivor Novellos, can you do a show on Shining Light by Ash, I'm going to see them Sunday and I think it's one of the most perfectly written songs (lyrically) of all time. Love the channel
The sentiment's great, but it seems to be becoming more common for artists to cancel shows because of reasons like this - shouldn't the answer really be reducing the length of tours in the first place? People have to book transport, hotels, take time off work for shows a lot of the time, so, while it's great artists have this ability to take time like this, it's a shame that it's at the cost of their fans. I'd really see more of a push for artists to not be exploited rather than praising the cancelling of shows.
This makes me think of Brad Griffith's, the front man from Pretty Vicious. I wish he had been given more help. Brilliant singer. I think they had the potential to be the best band to come out of Wales or the UK in a long time. You should cover Cave Song or one of there other singles. Well worth a look
He is a great artist… I reckon a break will do him the world of good. He also won’t lose any momentum… as he is a phenomenal talent!
"our" "We" Love how he regards himself as part of a band. Top bloke and an amazing talent
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Again 🎶🎶
Hiya Justin. Love your work. I just noticed that the main riff in your song All The Pretty Girls is very similar to the main riff in You’re Crazy by Guns n Roses. I’m just wondering if that’s just a coincidence or if you found inspiration from GnR? Cheers
I wish him the best.
I see Wet Leg also recently cancelled some US shows citing physical and mental heath as the reasons
Sam is already back in the arms of his people. Friend of mine sat next to him a Mexican restaurant in North Shields (Sam's home town) Fish Quay a couple of days ago. He will no doubt be frequenting the Low Lights Tavern as he always does. Its good to know that he's self aware enough to know when to stop. And I hope his team are right behind him, I'm sure they are. No doubt he's been on the phone to Elton too ha!
I think the Metallica film "Some Kind of Monster" has to be thanked for bringing to the forefront the struggles in the music industry and by confronting them, they lengthen an artist career (and ultimately) and life span.
Bloody hell Justin seems like a lovely bloke
alot of rumors are artists this year were not happy with how tickets sold and touring was not as profitable. They just had two years off from touring due to covid
That jacket is so cool
That is a nice tracksuit top
Just a thought - could you add some links in description to support organisations such as MIND, Music Minds Matters and Samaritans? (and ref to international equivalents). We never know who might benefit from signposting people to support when discussing this topic (imho)❤️
Really like what he does
Yes risky but this is powerful stuff. I suffer mental health issue's, i take sertraline so this hits home. As most have already wrote, more power to the guy. This subject should be openly spoke about in the music industry.
Understand the pressures and importance of preserving mental health but management need to build this in to scheduling upfront and not pull out when fans have paid and made arrangements. Time to fit bands with a tachograph so they can only be on the road for so long.
Never heard of Sam. I'll have to check him out.
As someone who follows Sam on social media, him and his band seem to work incredibly hard. Near constant touring or in the studio. Coupled that with huge popularity and attention and it's no wonder he needs a break. The fast rise to fame, money and adoration must blow your mind.
Not everyone is made for the road. Good luck to him.
"It is better to burn out than fade away" is a bollocks attitude for which we have lost too many. It's just as necessary to take a break from work because of mental stress as it is for physical trauma. Good for him! Question though.... Is this going to cost him and his band monetarily? I know concert promoters are not fans of pulling out...
Hi Justin! Just wondering if you’d consider doing a video on Catfish And The Bottlemen? For me the band were great but called it a day a few years ago for reasons unknown to me. Be interesting to hear your views? Cheers!
