In September 2019, Sam Fender released "Hypersonic Missiles", an album that was often labeled "political". With titles such as "Hypersonic Missiles" and "White Privilege", Fender will hardly be able to completely escape the catchword "political", but his statement will always remain this: "I'm just talking from a perspective of a normal kid". In our video interview we talked to Sam Fender about racism, toxic masculinity, "White Privilege", new singles and his hatred of ukuleles.

Sam is a RAW, young talent. As a man of 54, I can see his conflicts, his uncertainties coming through, yet I have never had so MUCH faith in a seminal artist who's head WILL clear, who WILL say things that need to be said in a way that WILL connect with the majority, because it just comes from a good place, his heart. People will listen, I've heard him. I'm so very, very impressed.

I recently expressed the view that the Labour Party could save a lot of time and money by playing 'AYE' and 'LONG WAY OFF' at their Conference, then just going home, taking the sentiment on board, and coming out in force to CHANGE this country for the better. I stand by that.

Same happened to me in the late 90s seeing a black kid in my local town in West Sussex and that town is only 20 minutes from Croydon which has had plenty of non-whites since the 50s/60s and its still unusual to see.non-whites here.

In a sentence of ten words you make two spelling mistakes, one punctuation error and you don't produce a sentence that makes proper sense. I say that not to be bitchy although it sounds it. I say it because boys underachieving at school and coming out of education barely literate has got more to do with it than feminism. The traditional jobs that working class lads could walk into in former generations have gone and they often feel lost and useless. That's not the fault of lasses. For every guy wishing he had a role as a breadwinner and a family to look after there's a girl with a kid or two who's been left to cope on her own by a useless lad who's run off. Maybe the first step to recovery is to stop blaming others, getting angry and looking for easy answers. And listening to incel loonies who'll lead you down a dark path.

But that is just silly. It's one naive idea he has. Deciding you don't like someone based on what idea you don't agree with is exactly what the far-left do. And it's counter-productive. And it is very possible he felt he was treading on eggshells. If he had suggested it didn't exist, the potential for his newly found life could've been over. Just a few months after this interview he suffered abuse for suggesting the statues of "slave traders" should be put into museums after they were torn down by commies. Haven't seen him show any support for commie rhetoric after that.

@@pauline1024 Because neo-Marxism is the origin of class and culture based guilt. Marxism was about shaming the majority and the successful; trying to level the playing field so everyone was equally oppressed. In the US and UK where the idea of white privilege has become dominant white people are the majority race and therefore have a majority of major jobs, advertising focus, television appearances etc. When people feel oppressed and weak marxist ideology gives them someone to blame their difficulties on. White privilege is actually a totally worthless concept because it can be applied to any race that is in the majority in any country. Even if you become aware of it you unfortunately cannot remove it. However it encourages defeatist attitudes, encourages people to give up trying because they've been taught that the world has been created to oppress them and that the majority will always be better than them. Stop being embarrassed about where you came from. My Gran was born in 1897 (One of ten kids) she lived through World War 1 when she was in her early twenties and lost the man she was engaged to, she then lived through the 1918 pandemic that killed 50 million world wide. After that she lived through the depression in the 30's with things getting really desperate at times and at the end of that the 2nd world war started and after that rationing well into the 50's. By then she was nearly 60 and still washed by the sink in the kitchen. I wonder what she'd have made of all this white privilege ? She had two kids, one was my Dad they both worked hard to make something of themselves and to provide for their kids like many do. Most working class kids that made good from my generation did so because of the hard times and graft the generations went through before them that gave them the glint of an opportunity to make good. Worst thing you can do when you want change is to ostracise people by generalising or being divisive. Terms like 'white privilege' and 'black power' only do that. Stand together, 'fight' together and support each other. Organise more events that bring people together, it's the best way of seeing we're basically the same and want the same things from life and really that's to be happy. I've been fortunate in my job to work with people from different cultures and countries all over the world and basically there's not much difference between us and what makes us happy. The more you mix the more you see just the person.

Couldn't agree more, terms like 'white privilege' will just create 'white resentment', the people who make up these terms are the ones who claim to be about equality and anti racism but are in fact the racists and the ones creating division.

Which is part of the problem. You've 'cancelled' a musician you loved because you don't agree with everything he says. And you're using the old clichés you get on right wing websites like 'virtue signalling snowflake'. The people with all the power and money want to make sure the 'little people' stay divided, angry with each other and divided. And it works.

@@blotski i agree with you, however sam femder is someone who is in a position of influence, with lots of money and fame and chooses to spread divisive identity based politics about "white privillage". I domt agree with the majority of musicians i listen to politically, but bringing out a song preaching that nonsense is excatly the problem today. I wpuld have never dared class myself as "on the right" 3/4 years ago. I always idenitified as being on the fence leaning slightly left, but ive come to realise the new age wpke left is something i cannot odenity with in the slightest. Lets be real here, its not the people on the right that are totally obsessed with, race, gender, sexual orientation etc. It all comes from the left. Catagorising everyone into little groups where anyone who isnt, straight, white or male is oppressed. Its toxic, and ot disgusts me in every way. They are the true racists and sam fender is just another one of the masses feeding into this utter crap amd that is why i choose to no longer support him...

And that you comment, alone, signals to me that this lad has something to say, agreeable or otherwise. He's young, as you once were, and he might be a nobhead, as you might have once been...but you grew up and matured, didn't you? We know a little more of who you are now, only because you do. I've as much faith is this lad now as I had in you at the start. Look how you turned out? Not too shabby.

I can't believe you've lead such a protected life that you've never, ever noticed a lot of men being aggressive and violent in a way that not many women are. How often do you hear of a bunch of girls gang raping a lad? Or a female army unit killing a load of children in a village? Or a lass killing her kids because her husband wanted to leave her? In Britain the number of women killed by men is three times higher than the number of men killed by women. Between 2004 and 2019 fifty four children were killed by their dad (six by their mum and nine by both). But it's not just women who suffer. It's blokes too. In fact, even more so because men mostly kill and assault other men. This is mostly a male problem. That's what people mean by toxic masculinity. It's not that being masculine is toxic. Most guys are masculine but kind, protective and decent. But it's that violence is by far a problem among men who haven't got their masculinity under control. Normal decent guy masculinity has got to win over shitty, aggressive 'toxic' masculinity. We can't do that if you're pretending it doesn't even exist.
