This Hong Kong cafe's "TERRIBLE" service had to be tested. I ate breakfast there (it was AWESOME).
As far a Hong Kong cha chaan teng cafes go, Australia Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司), in Jordan, is said by internet reviews to take curt service to a new level. I went there to try one of their legendary breakfast sets, and to see if the food was worth the "rude". (Spoiler: it was).

Can't agree more. We went there because of their bad attitude.
Just bear in mind that it is not a leisure cafeteria. It is a small dining place for "grass roots" so they do not speak in delicated way. At the same time it is also crowded with lots of hot drinks and dishes circulating back and forth. So it is also a risky place. Hence the staffs there naturally speak in more forceful ways. But they generally are not rude or hostile to customers. They want customers to settle down quickly so they can make money faster (of course) and safer. When you have a reasonable expectation on them, it can be fun to dine in there.

It's like that in non touristy expresso places in Italy during the morning. Locals go in, down a quick expresso, maybe munch on something quick and GTFO and on with their day. The staff rush the tourists who go there to sip at the bar and chat and take up space. Staff isn't being rude. It's efficient. And you're not familiar with the culture and flow. Like the tourists walking aimlessly in streets of NYC. We not rude telling you to GTFO way. You're ruining the flow of people traffic. We got places and things to do.

Rudeness in these cafes is part of the charm, it is a feature not a bug. If the service is too good it is not authentic, though this particular restaurant is way overrated.
This is a place that I regularly visit almost every weekend and definately one of my all time favourite restaurant as a local Hong Konger since I was 16 (I'm now 52). Their food, their flavour which I love, has not change for 3 decades and remains delicious & high quality. I don't understand why people always criticise on their "no service" or "impoliteness", everyone knows cha chaan teng is a place just to feed yourself full stomach and then go; no one would expect they will have a 5-star hospitality as long as the food is delicious and serve in fast so that you can hurry back to work or go to school. They are not rude they are just busy and need to non-stop taking care of the full house customers. This place is a grow-up memory of many people as well, many of us start eating their food since we were kids, most importantly their delicious food is our comfort food and we love Australian Dairy.

LOL.. I think the sense of rudeness that most tourist or foreigners get is simply because they are trying to compare it to restaurants in the western world... In most asian cafe's or restaurants the service is usually quick and abrupt and its all about just eat your food and get out of here to make room for the next customer..🤣🤣🤣

Not sure if rude/terrible is a way to describe their service. I understand their language and to maintain efficiency in getting everyone served and operating in a fast paced enviornment, their service is more curt and to the point. Get things done fast and customers get food. Compared to North america, we can't get such efficiency even in a fast food restaurant.

Oh wow- that is pretty rude! 🤣 thanks for sharing your experience!
Was supposed to go 2 weeks ago when i was in HK. Went to Kam Wah in Mongkok instead. To my suprise, HK service level is better compared to pre Covid era.

That’s a good point. I think the shadow of Covid definitely has businesses on their toes a little bit more. Sad- but a silver lining for us customers is slightly more thoughtful service. We’ve done a video on Kam Wah’s legendary Pineapple Buns. Check it out and tell us if it compares to your visit: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qp-n0taOhN2zh8Y.htmlsi=DQFAwFWWfnao4Y_j
Used to visit there with my 10yr old daughter for early breakfast and after our breakfast- my daughter asked me: “mummy, is it that the auntie did not have enough sleep that’s why she’s so grumpy?” 😅😅😅
I went there 5 days ago. Actually they are quite nice when it’s less busy. But the prices are ridiculously expensive when compared to other restaurants serving the same food.

What time did you go? That surprises me that you found the prices high- we only went for breakfast of course, but it was very reasonable!

Oh yes the breakfast sets are actually worth it for the value- but only the breakfast sets. We went around 4ish in the afternoon and we had to order all the items individually.
They are not rude actually, it’s their efficiency of working things, making sure the long waiting queue could be served as soon as possible, so no time for any fancy conversation or interaction. Glad you enjoy this unique HK experience, we Hong Kongers took 30 years to accustomed to it too😂

Speed is everything here! I really enjoyed the experience!
Just reminds me of what's HK like, the place where I had tons of wonderful childhood memories ❤❤❤ This is just how HK operates. Not rude but fast and efficient. If one speaks & understands canto, you will find such incidents exciting and funny.
Very informative video.

Thanks for watching, and glad you're enjoying the channel!
I would say the service is actually excellent if you are after a quick comfort food meal. Back in the good old days it'd be deemed a failure if you actually need to raise your hand to get a waiter to serves you. Normally they'd be running up to you with just simple eye contacts 😂 Same cant be said at most other under staffed restaurants in HK, even more expensive ones. PS. Next time try put some sugar onto your toast ;) I always prefer to eat the scamble eggs by itself PPS. Since everyone order the set you can simply order by just calling out macaroni, scrambled eggs, toast. And thats your order done in 3 seconds

How times have changed! Thanks for sharing that- and for the tips. They will come in handy when I next visit!
They are always efficient and caring. They offered priority service to my pregnant wife when we were lining up outside and picked a seat with extra space for us, we were so appreciated for their service.
I always go for the pork and preserved egg congee with the fried bread stick or the hong kong sammie. ❤❤

Sounds delicious!
Famous egg sandwich seriously 😂😂😂
They are very polite and great team work. You don’t even see any of their staff playing cellphones. They are very attentive and get to you before you even ask. You don’t see that kind of services in US.

Agreed that they're not bad here, and they are very attentive- I guess they need to be during the morning rush!
That City has always been like that, never seen anywhere like it. been visiting there since the eighties.

The place is so busy, so they must be doing something right. That said, the foods are old school, white bread for example, so not enough roughage particularly for breakfast.

Certainly not heavy on roughage and fibre, but for protein and carbs, I imagine it's hard to beat! A great place that is still super popular indeed!
Canadian Chinese from BC here, this is what efficient service is for the quick in and out dining experience. Not really rude at all, and you always know it's going to be good when it's cash only. Just reminds me of a few spots in Richmond, Burnaby and Vancouver.

Yup agreed as a fellow Chinese Vancouverite. These restaurants are made for quick in and out meals who need to go back to work.
Meanest I have ever watched a restaurant worker get in HK. Was when 2 people went up to a dim sum cart and got a few items without their cards. After they didn't wash their utensils and that brought really dirty looks

Oh no! Sorry you feel that way! Thanks for watching!
I was there many years ago…. too many customers and we were supposed to know what to order beforehand. The waiters have no time to wait for you to think what to eat.

Very true- they certainly expect you to have your order ready the minute you sit down at this place! Thanks for watching
Many HK Chinese said please don’t expect good service inside tea set restaurants as you are usually not required to pay 10% service charge. I can say it is a crazy ideology. But for this “Australian Cow Milk”, the service is much improved. You can eat at a lower pace. No rush.

I have heard others say that the service has improved here, and I can believe it- it's really not that bad...curt but not exactly "rude! Thanks for watching!
They don't seem that rude here, but if you want real rudeness go to China on the mainland.

My French friend complained that she was touched by many people (physically touched on her hair and shoulders) who were really curious to see any Caucasian wander on the streets in Shenzhen. She definitely didn’t enjoy that 😂
I went there last month during my vacation. I don't think they are the rudest restaurant in HK. I can only say what kind of people you are receives what kind of service there. They did say 'thank you' to me. I also saw them seating a pregnant lady at the corner, so people can't get into her way.

Agreed, I could definitely see some heart there. As I said in the video, I think this restaurant has a mix of really warm staff and “enforcer” types. I wonder if the owner does that on purpose 🤔
One of my favourite go to places when I visit Hong Kong

In and out within 5 min once you place your order, but wait line was horrible on my date. Food quality is slightly above average; however, I felt I was being force to eat fast in that environment. After all, it was a unique experience.

Wow- 5 minutes is fast! But honestly it doesn’t surprise me. Thanks for watching and commenting
Interesting for timing the order, 12 seconds that is insane. Some people like me as a local do enjoy getting scold and wanted to be scolded by this place. One time I went there when I was pregnant and wanted to get scolded for a bit but they saw I was pregnant and told others off to get out of the way. I remembered that experience so dearly as I didn't get the scolding I was looking for and they treated pregnant woman very kind. I'm sad to see those internet armies making terrible comments on their mainland platform about all our restaurants and trying to influence what we have. The mainlanders are asking for 5 5-star hotel service in Cha CanTing.
