More Interesting facts about This Hellish Crater Has Been on Fire for Almost 50 Years:
For nearly 50 years, Turkmenistan has had a fiery reminder of an idea that looks good on paper doesn't always pan out the way you'd like it to when it comes to the real world application of said idea. Look no further than the outskirts of a Derweze, a small village of 350 people in the middle of the Karakum desert. It is there a 230-foot-wide crater has been burning off methane gas since 1971.

Did anyone already estimate or calculate the amount of CO2 and other exhaust this is / was emitting daily or yearly? How many tons of? I mean this is 50-year of air-pollution by continously burning off natural gas (mainly methane), means using atmospheric oxygen. And this will go on until the cavity beyond it is "empty" (well long to go still, potentially) or until some concerted action stops it the other way. And yes, filling it with concrete of suitable density may be a solution to tighten the leak in the ground. Leaving it burning for tourist attraction is not an option, as it does not solve the initial problem here.

No. No it doesn't. Not if you're referring to the mythological underworld of eternal flame and torture aka Hades. Remember, it wasn't burning until these morons - who have crunchy self-love socks where their brains should be, started drilling, causing the floor to collapse, resulting in the neverending release of tons of gas, then having the idiotic idea of lighting it on fire to burn off the gas. It wasn't burning until those lunatic Soviets came along. IF the Hades of Biblical lore is REAL, its flames would date back to a primordial era.
