The graphic used for oil exploration is actually a pumpjack. Which is used to pump fluids out of an already drilled hole. Actually drilling the hole requires a drilling rig which has a tall derrick.

putting out the crater fire is easy: Fill it half way with dirt from the surrounding area. Pour water to the remaining top half. If the dirt weight collapse it further, pour more dirt and repeat. Burning a ring of fire with gas for decades is an absolutely waste of natural gas, not to mention the air pollution.

As for the spiders...it is much more likely that the spiders are drawn to the rising hot air which they use to "balloonette" off the edge, using a long strand of silk to catch and ride the rising thermals. It is unlikely and highly unusual for any animal, or spider to willfully die without a reason. Ballonetting is very common amongst many diverse spider breeds.

I just read this book, it's awesome but you should make it by CATEGORY instead of Country.... is easier to read for people with specific interests: mechanical, geographical, medical curiosities, occult, etc.
