McDavid is regarded as the fastest player (especially on transition) so a lot of the clips you are seeing, the D is misjudging his speed so they are caught flatfooted. His skill combined with his speed makes him someone to be reckoned with. There's a reason why he's on the voting block for 3rd time Hart trophy winner.

Exactly, his skill is not based on the speed but on how he manages to control the puck at that speed. No other current player can match his skill at that, hopefully in the future we will get a new McDavid

McDavid wasn't this impressive this year - he actually had a drop-off in points per game this season, but he has since turned on beast mode in the playoffs. Matthews with 60 goals probably deserves the regular season performance more - goals are worth more than assists in the NHL and with only 3 players getting 60 in the modern era, it's too special to deny him the award.

I went the other way, I grew up playing hockey and only started watching basketball a few years ago. The games are VERY similar. Like you said, offhand shots, you're trying to use fakes to get bites, but if you watch deeper, even the offensive and defensive schemes are very similar. Drawing strong side attention and then hitting the corner man how NHL power plays tend to operate. Two on the edge of the paint with three on the perimeter is the crux of how defense works. It's basically the same sport, except for the very, very obvious differences. A very usual play is the gain the zone, work the puck around the perimeter, take a good looking shot, and have your center and forwards clean up the rebound. That's an average, every game, 12-15 times a team look. Same sport.

Incredible hockey IQ and skills.

Yeah but I don’t think he intentionally left the zone. It looked like he mishandled it a bit or it just got away from him a little at the blue line. Then it almost looked like he wasn’t sure if he had left the zone or not & didn’t want to risk offsides, so at that point he for sure took it all the way out of the zone & reset from there. But whether leaving the zone was intentional or not it was a fantastic play & crazy hockey IQ regardless

To give you a quick synopsis of McDavid, he's the undisputed best player in the NHL currently. Has been since his 19 year old season in 2016/17 when he swept all 3 MVP awards (Ross/Lindsay/Hart). He has gone on to win 6 more MVP awards. Since his rookie season, he has finished the season either 1st or 2nd in points every single year, which is an unbelievable achievement. In terms of his legacy he won't go down as the GOAT of hockey. Wayne Gretzky has a strangle hold on the NHL record book that will very likely never come close to being surpassed. But McDavid is trending to be one of the very best to ever play and the best of the 21st century. From a technical standpoint he is likely the most skilled player to ever touch the ice- his speed, stick handling, and IQ for the game combine to form player never seen before. But the reason he won't pass Gretzky is he isn't nearly as dominant in comparison to his peers, even if he is objectively the faster/stronger/more accurate shooting player. He hasn't enjoyed much playoff success, but hockey is a much more team centric sport in comparison to something like Basketball. One or two superstars simply isn't enough, it takes a very deep 20 man roster who all contribute significantly. But in terms of individual achievement he's passed Crosby at the young age of 25 and will very likely continue to stack his trophy case over the next decade. I think its very probable he wins the Stanley cup in his career, he's too talented not to. It was awesome watching you react to this video. Hope I helped!

The best puckhandler is Patrick Kane, and the flashiest would be Trevor zegras. Trust me when I tell you to watch some of their highlights and you won’t be disappointed.

There aren't many sports out there at the moment where the question of 'Who's the best player in the world' is 100% agreed on by every single person. Mcdavid right now and for the last 3 or 4 years has been that answer. Most dominant athlete in the world right now compared to his peers and its not even close

Flashy type players in the NHL would definitely include McDavid, Patrick Kane can dazzle and an older player Pavel Datsyuk was also flashy. There are also players like Nikita Kucherov who do flashy things but make it more subtle, like more deceptive than flashy. Then you have players like Nathan MacKinnon who just bulldoze around the ice at max speed but can also control the puck at max speed making them very dangerous.

Canadian boy here; McDavid is regarded as one of the most talented NHL players to ever lace skates up and he's also regarded as the fastest player WITH the puck. Lots of guys are fast without carrying the puck, but almost every single player in history gets slower when stickhandling the puck and McDavid is one of few who doesn't slow down at all. His mind, reaction time, and hands/feet are the fastest in the game today.

I've never seen McDavid with his head down when handling the puck, never. That's why he's just as fast with the puck, it's all feel with him, as long as he feels the puck he doesn't have look down which would slow him down if he did. I mean, the guy is so friggin fast anyways so I don't know how much it might slow him down, he'd still probably be faster than everyone else! Lol. The guys a freak of nature, a man playing amongst boys

Honestly his moves may look flashy but they are more reactionary he reads where the defense goes adjusts his body and Edgework on his skates, it's his little ticks that open up defenseman. He can pass through multiple sticks and legs to find his teammates so when he looks for a pass defenseman have to respect he might be setting up a back door play, he will look one way shift his hips and in split second with a body juke he goes other way and breaks free. He's unequivocally the best player in the nhl right now and possibly ever. Every bit the vision and iq as warned Gretzky and more physical presence and physical domination than 99. This coming from a leafs fan not an oilers fan. Respect is given when it's earned and he's earned it.... there's this guy there's nathan McKinnon and Austin matthews are three best in league right now

Hey bro, love the vids just wanted to say as a lifer in hockey. Most of these defenseman aren't "swiping at the puck".. as a dman in hockey, watching the chest is superior to the puck, so 'swiping' at the puck is like a secondary tactic to staring down a crest and dropping the body. But as you've seen , some folks are a bit keen to escape that lol

  • @schwamieboy1

Yeah it's interesting that you showed the similarities in hockey & BBall. I grew up playing both sports and there are some interesting skills that if worked on, compliment each other in the game. McDavid makes those skills kinda more obvious to recognize because they re greatly exaggerated at the expense of not only the defence and goalie but even the whole line!

Great video Matt-- here's a secret cheat sheet that no one seems to fully get unless they've played... What makes this so impressive is that his head is up the whole time... If you drop your head in the NHL you get clocked. Look up videos of guys like Lindros who in spite of being a giant human being got absolutely smashed for playing head down too much.

yea, its similar to basketball in that you still have to put the puck(ball) in the net. Big difference is... the average score in NHL is like 4-3 or something, whereas in NBA, its like 100-80 or something. So less emphasis on scoring, more emphasis on forechecking, hitting, puck handling (like faking guys out) Both have different vibes basically, but I enjoy watching both. And yea right now, I would say McDavid is the most skilled player in the league right now.

I agree with what you’re saying about hockey vs basketball. They’re different sports forsure but they both include having to beat defensemen and in doing that there’s little things that are similiar . Like no look passes. You’ll see that in hockey and basketball . Or misdirection with looks. The clip where you brought that up if you notice he’s looking over and back like he’s gonna pass in that direction to mislead the defensemen and then quickly dangles in and out to beat him and doesn’t pass. Absolutely there’s similarities

  • @vlisto3712

He's like Kyrie Irving mixed with Giannis. He has the quickness and agility of Kyrie. But also imagine that you do get in front of him. It would be pretty similar to Giannis running into you at full speed. It's almost impossible to touch him at full speed, but if you do you're probably not playing again that season. You're basically getting hit by someone weighing 200 pounds travelling at 40 kilometres per hour. That's one of the reasons you don't see him getting hit. Even if you COULD touch him, it takes a real menace to have the balls to do it.
