Ik you keep saying sorry for the pauses but I genuinely enjoy when you pause and explain what you’re seeing from your unique pov. It’s honestly what makes your hockey reacts so great cause you appreciate the insanity of the sport while knowing very little and drawing parallels from basketball which you’re very knowledgeable about. Been loving these, keep grinding dude.

The most dangerous spot on the ice is about 3 to 5 feet away from the boards; you have no place to go if you try to evade, and you’re too far away from the boards to use them as a dampener (new boards flex more than the old ones) so you usually end up getting launched in to the boards or slam down on the ice. The NHL hits a lot harder now than it used to because the equipment makes you feel nothing, whereas in the past it hurt the hitter to blow up an opponent so there was a tendency to let up if you had no ill will for each other. Scott Stevens hits would all be considered illegal these days. HMU if you ever want some clarification on the rules for hits and penalties.

If you search the Stevens hit on Karia you can see after a couple seconds the gasp of air (breath) that fogs up his face shield. The trainer pulled him from the game to check for concussion and later he went back in and (if I'm correct) scored the game winning goal. When he later was asked he said he doesn't remember anything after the hit

Ice Hockey, this modern version, and Basketball were both invented by Canadians. As a Canadian, who grew up playing hockey and as a proud fan, you are welcome! and you can have basketball! This rough style of hockey is Canadian Hockey. It is the reason why Canada is the dominate hockey nation in the world - more than twice as many intetnational wins/medals than the next closest country - Russia. Thankfully, some US players and leagues have adopted the Canadian style of hockey and avoid the European Style of hockey. The NHL was a Canadian league that expanded into the USA. Historically, most NHL players are Canadian, but that has dropped from almost 100% down to 50% today. Even hockey teams in the USA are half Canadian players or more. Hockey pucks are vulcanized rubber that are frozen for game use, reduces bouncing of puck. Pucks are shot at average speeds of 88 mph up to about 110 mph. The glass is 1/2 inch thick safety glass. The boards, can move a little, but are not padded and are boards, hard. Body and Hip checks are legal providing 1) the head is not the initial point of contact 2) you can't your elbow or knee, 3) you don't hit people from behind, on the numbers on back of jersey and 4) hip checks must be above the knee. Hockey players move at speeds of up to 28 mph and collisions between two players can occur at over 50 mph. Even though hockey players are app 20% smaller than NFL players, NHL Hockey hits are known to be over 20% harder than NFL or rugby. Then they land on ice or are smashed into boards - lol can't run out of bounds, in hockey, to avoid getting hit. You are not allowed to hit anyone with your stick, unless it was a follow- through on a shot. Fighting is illegal and results in at least a 5 min penalty or more. Fighting usually results in response to a dirty play/player - retribution and punishment - see ' the code' Hockey players do not stay down unless they are really hurt, normally they pop back up and keep playing - other sports could LEARN from this Most common hockey injuries are stitches and loosing teeth aka 'spitting chicklets' - when this happens, hockey players don't usually even miss a shift Hockey players play through the pain on broken legs, broken feet, broken jaws, noses and facial bones. If at all humanly or inhumanly possible, hockey players finish their shift, the game and the series. Ice Hockey is rated as the SECOND most difficult and tough sport, just behind boxing. Less than a 1% difference between the two. It is followed by football, mma....but who really cares about that. Each game is a full 60 minutes, made up of three 20 min periods. The clock is stopped when game play is halted. The NHL regular season is 82 games ( also has pre-season) and Stanley Cup Playoffs where you must win '4' best of 7 series, hence a minimun of 16 games to a maximum of 28 games played! An entire football season just to win the cup! Hence, it is the hardest trophy in professional sports to win! Finally, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE PLAY-OFF HOCKEY!

The Scott Steven's argument is a tough one. They have changed the rules since he played (retired in 2005) and today a lot of his hits would be considered dirty because he makes contact with the head. At the time those hits were legal though. That being said the hit in Paul Karia was a late hit and dirty when it happened. This is coming from a Devils fan too.

  • @pablovandyck

Well not really a tough one. He gave head shots to both Lindros and Kariya. Neither player was ever the same again. Head shots, knee shots, and checking from the rear into the boards are illegal for a reason.

In terms of the "clean vs dirty" thing, it honestly boils down more to how dangerous the hit is and the targeted players capacity to react and protect himself. General things like headshots and hits from behind are always considered dangerous and especially in this era they will almost always get called. A couple other things refs might look for are the number of strides taken before contact, whether or not the hitter leaves their feet, and if the hit drives the player into the boards wrong. Basically, the more likely the hit is to injure someone, the more likely it will be a penalty.

I was a hitter so I extra like this one lol ALSO it's Sunday and you're well over 15k subs now so you're taking off! BTW it is easier to put a hit on someone near the boards but the ones that really hurt are the ones in open ice.

You need to understand something about a lot of those Scott Stevens hits.. The CURRENT NHL prohibits deliberate, targeted shots to the head. This is a result of the league's player safety protocols. However, at the time that Stevens played those protocols had not been put in place. Under the rules at the time, all of those hits were considered "legal". Stevens was known as one of the hardest hitters in the league, and was also one of the most respected and admired players during his carreer.

Here’s the thing though with you saying all these hits are unnecessary. While that may be true, you know for a fact the next time the dude that got clocked is going to touch the puck he’s gonna want nothing to do with it. He’ll either hesitate that one second or make a bad play once he has it. The big hits set a precedent for a 7 game playoff series that every time you touch the puck, you’re going to pay for it with your body.

The one two three is about the hockey-ist thing ever. That’s Dustin byfugkien. Arguably the baddest dude in hockey. And he’s a poc if that matters

the scott stevens hits effectiviley ended the first two players careers. they were superstars in the league until those hits happened and they were never quite the same after. i personally think their both dirty

I played football and hockey and there wasn't much in football that equaled the multiple hits in hockey.

The Steven's hit on lindros was clean, unfortunate he had his head down but it wasn't headhunting, the one on Kariya was close but I think it was barely too late. The hit itself was fine just late

There’s a code in hockey. Much like football. If you’re gonna give a hit be ready to take a hit. Most of the hits in this montage are completely fair. No penalties. But Scott Stevens. Was different.

Scott Stevens was the hardest hitting, "legal" crusher of souls, to ever,... EVER, lace 'em up. (Actually met him in Edmonton after a game against the Oilers)... (long story, 😆 🤣) he had/has, the biggest f*cking hands I've ever shaken, and the meakest, most humble... est?...??...(ummm... anyway) demeanor and friendly personality while hanging out at a pub in Edmonton, (he had relatives there) that you couldn't help but to like him, and admire his "on-ice" heroics. Hall of Fame !!!!!

They’re not dirty hits just because you’re not going for the puck. The goal of hits is to separate the player from the puck or slow the player down. Hits are dirty when the intent is to injure. Yes injuries happen but that shouldn’t be the intent.
