Ойындар

Ever wonder where the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG game from? Not the manga, not even the anime, this simple Game Boy game from 1998, released only in Japan.

    I don't know if you realized this, but July 4th is the anniversary of Kazuki Takahashi's passing (creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!). His body was found after jumping into a rip tide to save two swimmers. The two swimmers did survive, and his heroic act was later reported in a military magazine, because the swimmers happened to be an Americqn soldier and her daughter. May Takahashi rest in peace. A true hero.

    This game was SUPER popular in Japan. It sold 1.6 million copies and was one of the top-50 best-selling games in Japan ever (circa 2000). It outsold iconic games like Dragon Quest 1, Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros, Resident Evil 1, Tekken 3, Secret of Mana, Metroid, and Kirby's Dreamland (just to name a few). It also was the platform for the first ever Yugioh tournament - that's right, the video game was played competitively before the card game even existed!

    Oh hey, a Yugioh video from JRose, neat. It's amazing that there is a Yugioh game even more primitive than Forbidden Memories and the Dark Duel Stories we got, but here it is. There's something just charming about these ancient GameBoy entries that, while I know it lacks in the technical department, just makes it enjoyable to watch.

    Simon Muran is a weird case. He's Grandpa Muto's egyptian ancestor who only appeared near the final arcs of Yugioh, but he's been in several videogames before he showed up in the manga or anime.

    An important correction to an otherwise great video; the manga and anime did not get their rules from this game. They were written before this game released. This game did its best to mimic how the game was initially played in Duelist Kingdom. However, the rules of this game did become the first draft of the actual rules the physical game eventually adopted. Thanks for rhe video!

  • @LazurBeemz

    @LazurBeemz

    22 күн бұрын

    It's a bit more complicated than that - this game was announced in May 1998, near the start of the Duelist Kingdom arc. The game was released in December of that same year, right after Yugi duels Kaiba for the right to enter the castle, before the Semi-Finals start. So in terms of "rules of the game" that Konami had to work with, it was only the first 2/3rds of Duelist Kingdom! Then, the OCG would start in February 1999 - while Yugi was dueling Mai. Duelist Kingdom hadn't even finished yet! But these rules are still similar to Duelist Kingdom and the Duel Monsters game. It wasn't until May that the Expert Rules were released, which added Tribute summoning and removed the 1 spell/trap per turn restriction. Shortly afterwards, in July, Duel Monsters II was released. At this time, the Duelist Kingdom arc finally ended, and after the short Dungeon Dice Monsters arc, Battle City began. This is when the manga introduced its rule changes, catching the game up to how the actual card game was being played. The anime didn't start until April 2000, btw. (well, there was an earlier adaption in 1998, the fabled "Season 0", but that stopped short of adapting Duelist Kingdom) This coincided with a rules update for the OCG that introduced continuous spells and traps, special summoning, hand size limits, etc. By this point in the manga, Battle City was in the middle of its preliminary rounds - Joey had defeated Weevil, Yugi dueling Strings, shortly before Yugi's tag duel with Kaiba. All of this is to say: while the manga had begun Duelist Kingdom, and the Duel Monsters Gameboy game was based on those rules, it didn't have a ton of material to pull from because the arc was being written alongside development of the game. And then Konami continued to develop their own rules for the card game, before those rules were implemented in the manga. And obviously, the anime came after both. So I think it's fairly accurate to say that this game DID "invent" the Yugioh card game!

    @@LazurBeemz Thank you for all the additional info. I mostly just had the dates to work on since Duelist Kingdom began publication a full year before the game was released. But given how popular it was after only a few appearances before that in the manga, it makes sense they would be building a media franchise alongside its full introduction as the main plot element of the story.

    Idk if you're aware, but while the anime for "season 0" is a separate continuity made by a different studio, the manga is one continuous narrative. Duelist Kingdom does follow immediately after the final shadow game of the first arc in the original manga. It's only the anime where season 0 is unrelated, retconned, and only very selective parts retold. I only bring this up because it blew my mind when I first learned it. I always thought DM was just a total reboot of the series.

    I'm super interested in these weird pre TCG yugioh video game and their wacking rule sets. This is super neat to see.

    Simon muran is ancient egyptian solomon muto (yugi's grandpa). Kazuki takahashi had the idea for the character but he didn't decide to make him solomon's past life until he started working on the memory world arc.

    Simon was the right hand man of the Pharoah, and seems to be an ancient parallel to Yugi's grandpa.
