I had a really good experience with Wolfenstein: Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the original Xbox Live. I remember how I managed to get it when I was in grade 5: I would grind a Diablo 2 multiplayer sorc to level 90, traded it for Yu-Gi-Oh cards, then I sold those cards at school to afford the Xbox Live Starter pack. Oh my, what a fucking time.

The thing about SOCOM is it’s not just nostalgia. No other shooter has more satisfying gunfights. Fast strafe, reticle right over head instead of ots, no need to slow down and ADS to shoot, no sprint button just hold the stick etc. Game was fucking brilliant.

No other shooter since has given us the ability to Create rooms, customize every little bit of them, have clan tags, have 1 player push to talk (So that you don't get people in screaming matches that wreck the game with their b.s. audio), have clan ladder rankings, a sense of community via the server you and your friends would play in, etc. It was so advanced for it's time... the industry has taken major steps backwards and it's pathetic.

I remember when the PSP GO came out and my friend got it, it wasn't good like you say at all, the problem was you could only download games from the online store, no disc nothing(you couldn't share games with your buddies!), back then it was a huge problem and very unattractive for most people who had a normal psp like me plus the device itself was not comfortable to play on and it had a tiny screen compared to the psp. No wonder why it died off so quick. Not trying to be mean maybe if they came out with it nowadays with a new design it would of sold more.

I remember my dad owning 1 and 2 and playing them as a kid (I’m 23 next week so it shows how young I was) I got quite engaged in the franchise early even if it was only the single player. I eventually bought 3 and CA in the dying days of ps2 game sales when you could still get games in Walmart and even bought the 3 fireteam games for my psp. Never did get into confrontation as I went the Xbox route during that era but it is still to this day my favorite franchise in gaming. I still own all but 1&2 and occasionally go back and play them from time to time. My dream for this franchise is not so much a new development game but remasters of the old games. Would be great to see.

I still remember when I was introduced to SOCOM. Only had a gamecube at the time but I use to go over to my cousins house and he had Broadband (Fast Access DSL) 😂I didn't even know what that meant at the time, but he started playing SOCOM 1 online telling me all these stories, epic moments, and people he met playing this game. Clan wars, the whole nine. Fast forward I beg my mom for a PS2 and broadband internet and we get it. I get SOCOM 2 probably close to a year before SOCOM 3 drops. SOCOM 2 till this day is probably my most memorable time of online gaming. People were nice, wanted to play and communicate with others, and just...... *POSITIVE* 🤣 Of course you ran into some ''toxic'' people but it was AT THAT TIME few and far between. People had decency and just wanted to play and get better. Met so many cool people my age, to grown men with families and a busy schedule but loved SOCOM and were VERY serious about the game. That moment in time to where online gaming was a new thing was truly magical and will never be touched again. Prime Socom & Halo are the greatest multiplayer shooters ever created imo. Great video... had me shed a single thug tear

I missed the boat on these... I was already in the army by 2003. Had my first deployment that year, infantry 11b. But when I came back? SOCOM was what changed my career path. I decided to change MOS, and the result? Over 20 years, I did Ranger, Recon, got out, went private, and somehow found myself in an outfit doing CSAR for various NGOs working in warzones. If not for games like SOCOM, along with Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Metal Gear, I probably would've stayed a grunt or gotten out. Idk whether that's a good or bad thing though.

Didn’t even get past the ad and I already liked and subbed… Anyone who says “SOCOM changed my life..” is a kindred spirit. I can still remember walking into my friend’s dorm room from my room across the hall and seeing him “talking” to his PS2. He kinda explained the game, but without actually playing I couldn’t grasp what he was on about. I went to another friend’s room and he was playing too, but not the campaign, MULTIPLAYER!!! I got my ass handed to me for hours and literally dreamed about the game that night. I went and got a PS2 and an adapter and started playing, sometimes with friends, but mostly solo (because my confidence was trash). Anyway, by SOCOM II I was well into the top percentiles for almost every metric (however my grades suffered). If anyone here played A LOT (or did game battles, etc.) you may even know me (SEEDLESS from KBN clan). Anyway, long story short, it’s idk how many years later and I still have close personal relationships with my clan mates from way back then (I’m talking people in Ireland, England, Canada, Australia, the US and more). I’ve visited their homes and they mine, I’ve attended their kids’ graduations and even a wedding or two. We exchange holiday cards, look after one another and so on. Shit, I’ve even loaned money to more than one of them (not obscene amounts, but nothing petty like a couple hundred bucks either). We are ALL (even some of the kids who never got to play but still remember their parents blissed out on SOCRACK wax nostalgic) still reminisce about those years between SOCOM and Combined Assault (I’ll strongly believe that SOCOM II was and remains the greatest “tactical shooter” in the history of gaming, warts and all, but it all went to shit between III and the end of CA if I remember correctly). The game was far ahead of its time and nothing since has quite scratched that itch the way SOCOM did. I apologize for the lengthy comment, this topic is just extremely dear to me and I have been clamoring for a “reboot” of the franchise since 2014. I personally have $42,762.88 to invest in any studio willing to do the original work justice with their homage to the king. What I’m hoping is that there are enough hardcore fans of the franchise who, even if they don’t have capital to invest, would devote time and effort to the project. I truly believe that if a modern SOCOM dropped, it would be a massive success. We just need to find a studio that is capable of producing the same quality and attention to detail, hammer out licensing and legal with Sony (I know, fucking nightmare, but it’s worth a shot before I am dead) and the waiting (obviously there’s way more to it, but to get the shit off the ground that might do). I will consistently check back on this comment to see if there are any other SOCOMers out there.

this was my first online shooter and i spent over 1000 hrs on it, i loved socom 2 and confrontation but especially s2... it's alittle crazy to me that it doesn't get more shine on youtube, it was THE game to play on ps2, if you were playing a different game online (tony hawks, timesplitters, burnout) any other online game, it was then socom2 where you met up with everyone afterwards. great video man

SOCOM changed my life for the better as well. Currently, I'm roommates with someone I met on S1. I've been roommates with 2 other people that I played SOCOM with, and basically became a part of their family. I will be the best man at one of their upcoming weddings. I've met about 20 people in real life from SOCOM. We would have SOCOM parties where people from Alabama, Idaho, Canada, and various parts of California would come together to meet up, play SOCOM with multiple TVs in the same room, and party. I've made lifelong important relationships because of that franchise and still game with the core members from our clan/group. SOCOM will always be my #1. I will never forget it. I appreciate this video you've made. On another note, It's sad that a 20 year old game had more features, customization, variety, maps, and sense of community and communication than anything we see today or most likely will ever see again.

LOVED SOCOM 2! I remember being in this clan where all of our names were names of liqours. Seagrum's 7 reporting in. I used to get off duty, come home and play this for hours in my uniform. Did not care. Absolute best online experience ever. Even after you die, joining your teamates and stratagize about the next round. Making plans. Watch out for those spawn grenades!

Good stuff man, as usual. I cannot put into words how much I miss the old SOCOM days and playing clan wars on SOCOM Battles and eventually Game Battles. I started at 13 years old and I am 33 years old today and there is yet to be a game or franchise that has captured me the way SOCOM did throughout SOCOM II, III, and Combined Assault. I put up with Confrontation and recognized what Sony was doing to SOCOM 4 and it made me absolutely sick. Video games and especially online multiplayer shooters have become almost unenjoyable entirely as a whole. The devs today for the most part do not know how to make a good tactical shooter and I imagine the ones that do do not have the backing to support the skills. Some of the few studios that have the experience and knowledge are squeezed by dirty money hungry publishers who just trying to make as much money as possible and forcing devs to make the game they have to make and not necessarily the one they want to make. I really wish Sony PlayStation would wake the fuck up and bring back the SOCOM franchise with the right studio and leave them to make the game great again on PS5 with modern graphics at 120fps. I do not know if I would ever buy another game if they did that and it had the SOCOM II feel all over again. The way games are going and being made today, I imagine the PS5 may end up being my final console as I just cannot justify purchasing another console to play games that belong in a trash can outside of first party games like God of War and The Last of Us. Happy Anniversary SOCOM, there were just so many good memories. Long live the memories on my favorite franchise of all time and the SOCOM shuffle way of life! 👍

Fun fact: the player made game mode Micheal Meyers started on confrontation. We use to play hide and seek all the time then one day the seeker played the Michael Meyers theme song when hunting us and since it was proxy mic we could hear him coming. It was amazing and scary and we did that all the time after that so I’m gonna say socom and the group I played with started Mike Meyers. You’re welcome 😊

Unfortunately I missed this game because my parents only had money for one system and I chose PC because most of my friends were playing on PC. We had Medal of Honor, BF1942 and CoD so I had my awesome childhood experience playing with them but man, this game looks absolutely insane, even today. Those animations are mind blowing, the features for stealth and such are awesome and the multiplayer looks and sounds fantastic. It's weird that I don't know you personally but seeing and hearing about your childhood with this game feels like I do know you. I guess this is what gaming is all about, we can connect through these experiences without actually knowing each other. Thanks for sharing this!

I had a headset for the voice commands in single player and they never worked but it came into play once I discovered online gaming. I had never conceived of gaming online before and one day when I was like 8-9 years old before we had wifi I plugged the Ethernet cable from the modem into my ps2 and within a few hours I learned what it was like to have an adult make fun of me for not having hit puberty yet. That was traumatic at the time but it hardened me against the verbal abuse I would receive gaming in the future so I have socom to thank for that. It got to a point where i was afraid to talk on the mic because on top of sucking at the game so much my internet was dog shit, so everyone always hated my guts and would constantly remind me how much I suck. I remember being told to stop playing many times and taking it extremely personally. It was stressful but addicting at the same time. This might sound weird but your video touched me man, I would love to hop on and play that game again now that I’ve hit puberty and lived through another decade and a half

This is a great story to listen too. Always nice to see people being this passionate about a certain game and what it meant for them. I never got to play the socom games as I didn't own a console back then, I was a pc gamer, but I loved tactical games, I was jalous about the headset with speach commands tho, that sounded so awesome to me, Ghost Recon didn't have that sadly. I only got to experience Socom with Socom 4, but as said, that wasn't the same experience so even today I can't claim I experienced the socom games :(

Dude 👏 fuck 👏 yes. I am so happy to see someone acknowledge and review the series like this, and talking about the revival server and current socom community and stuff. My brothers and I have been massive fans of the series ever since Socom 2 came out, and we'd watch our dad play online on it alllllll the time. My brothers and I were only able to play Single Player and were never allowed to play online, and it wasn't until like April-May of last year when I watched Sharpp05s video on how to install and setup everything, and I've been having a blast ever since. I try and play every Friday for S2 comm night and the 1st Wednesday of every month for S3. My tag on the games r for the most part DiamondEyes935, but I like to use other names on occasion.

This takes me back. I never played MP in these games since we never got the network adapter until Confrontation which wasn’t my first online MP experience, my first Online experience was actually Resistance 2, that game to me was and still is the golden standard for Online Coop. Was definitely disappointed to see what SOCOM 4 became. Never got it nor played it. That’s exactly what happens when you chase trends instead of staying true to what that game was. That ended up killing it. There’s another game series that I grew up on that did the same thing that same year, Ace Combat: Assualt HORIZEN. But thankfully unlike Zipper, Project Aces actually listened to their fans and did not continue with doing that after Assualt HORIZEN. They made Ace Combat Infinity which was a free to play game for PS3 that brought back the original gameplay I loved and I loved it. But due to the fact that it was a Free to Play game it had that awful Fuel system which I eventually couldn’t keep up with since I was in my first year of college at the time. I stopped playing after 3 months and later on would start playing destiny instead. That game ended up closing its servers on march 2018 then in January 18th 2019 Ace Combat 7 came out. It was a valiant return to form and returned to what made Ace Combat so good. I’m pretty sure they are hard at work on Ace Combat 8 as we speak. Which then brought renewed interest to that genre which is flight shooters, in 2020, we got Project Wingman which is an indie game. It plays just like AC but has things in it that actually made it better in some aspects. I hope that one day Socom will get the Spyro Reignited Trilogy treatment and get a Remade trilogy of the first 3 games. It would be a very nice change of pace and whiff of fresh air.

SOCOM was my first online MP and I was addicted, I remember being on for practically 2 days straight. I enjoyed the PSP SOCOMS too. SOCOM games single handedly gave me long life friends. Zipper messed up with S4 we all knew it then... /6 Confrontation and the Artic DLC or whatever it was called was a nice touch but overall was an ok game, but I never quite got into as some of my other friends. There is so many ppl I miss from SOCOM. HeavensHell, LarryChachi, Gonzo_77, and loads more. Longshot but you never know who watches what on here. Honorable mention: SOCOM had good music for the game and even online lobbies did too (even if you did turn it down after sometime to socialize in pre-game lobby waiting to "G^") Man I miss the old vibe of the SOCOM community. Ahhh Desert Glory, my most favorite map ever. I remember being a terrorist, and pulling the VIPs out of their cell, and then forcing them into the destructible corner of the room, then taking out my pistol and shooting them once each in the foot, just so that if the SEALS blew the wall it would kill the VIPs and give us the win lol. I miss this game! Sadly SOCOM 4 was ruined by having the cover mechanics put in and filled with clutter in order to be used as a gimmick for Sony to be able to sell the Move controllers and Sharpshooter attachment. Then the PSN hack finished the job.

This is still the best online game i've ever played. I was 26 when this game came out (I am 46 now). I met some very good friends (A few of which I still game nightly with to this very day) and the others we still remain in touch. What set Socom a part from online games of today. Was the (Large maybe for it's time) but small community. There were golden rules set that you just didn't do. 1. You never brought out Grenade launchers (Unless it was agreed upon) 2. You never used the OP weapon (The IW). 3. During Clan wars it was always both teams choose a map and the tie breaker map was always "Crossroads". That would never work in todays gaming. Nobody has any respect, the communitys are too large. Most games are designed to play for your stats and to unlock the next cool gun. Even in team based games EVERYBODY plays for themselves. It was a very special time, one I am proud to say I was apart of. ^ACO^ was our clan two time top eight in the Eseals tournament

Very well said. SOCOM2 was a generational game. Current gen players will never realise how groundbreaking this game was, and still is. It blew me away in 2003, and twenty years later it blows me away even more. The arcade/sim gameplay, voice chat, map design, menu/lobby system, and OTS were masterpieces. It felt polished, premium, and unique. Twenty years later my Friends List mostly comprises of people I met on SOCOM2. We are strangers again now, and despite never playing together these days we exchange the odd message from time to time with the familiar report "...still waiting for SOCOM2...". At this point you have to wonder why Sony never re-invested in SOCOM2. I heard there were ownership issues regarding the codebase, but still.. Simply put, SOCOM2 puts every other multiplayer console game in the past twenty years to shame. Period.

Great video and retrospective man. You definitely earned my sub. Used to love this series as a kid back in the early 2000s. It peaked at part 2 and slowly went downhill afterwards. Confrontation’s launch was abysmal and I never had a chance to really give it a fair shot. And man don’t get me started on that half-assed COD attempt and PlayStation Eye camera/ controller Wii knock off seller of Socom 4 🙄 I really hope Sony consider reviving this franchise with a competent developer and fair budget. This game was the reason to own the PS2 back then for me. And this could easily validate me purchasing a PS5 today. Also, thanks for sharing the links for the dedicated PC servers. Respect from a fellow Socom fan!
