Dear Antoni, maybe I have an answer for the electrics in the towers. You might consider placing a handrail - une balustrade - against the outer wall that spirals along with the stairs. It could be hollow and hold the tubes, or - if its a wooden handrail - have a recess on the invisable side. From there you would only have short distances of wiring to the lamps. For the electrics to the rooms there are probably ways to hide the wiring in or behind drainage pipes, through sealings, behind insulation ... There will no doubt be examples in other castles. Enjoy this wonderful building!

Finally! A Frenchman renovating his heritage! I have been watching all kinds of nationalities snapping up and refurbishing French Chateaux and was left wondering why were French people letting this happen? Were their own people not interested in saving their heritage? Was the price higher for a French person? Were the French not interested in DIY? I just couldn’t understand it. Now this!! Wonderful! And what an absolutely fabulous place! The original little castle gateway and the truly beautifully proportioned main house. It’s going to be a blast watching this gem brought to gleaming life. One last word - that unbelievable wooden floor upstairs! WOW! No other word seems to fit! And the Germans ripped up a floor like that for firewood? I pass no judgement now but I have no words for the barbarity. Well, they must be warm enough where I hope they have landed up! Good luck, Good Doctor! This is very exciting!

Or maybe the youtube channels are more international oriented, a lot of French people are renovating, taking care of heritage building. Your view based on what you see on internet might have a bias. There're problems with taking care of building in France ( and Europe) but good , it's not just foreigners that are taking care of it ...

@@TheSecretChateau There is another Chateau lady who is English and her husband is (German?) if I remember correctly and she had these delft (?) type tiles or Desvres as you say, replaced by hand ...she is an artist and she either redesigned them but in the old technique or replaced them. I can't remember. But she used one of the last artisans who does this kind of work. Perhaps you are the one? Anyway she did a fine job. She had quite the artist's eye to draw beautiful floral patterns on them in the blue & white style. The Fleur de Lis is such a special symbol of pre-revolutionary France. The royals used the symbol, and the English also used it (or copied it) and I'm sure it has special meaning and spiritual significance. Many crowns of gold among the European monarchs were wrought using this motif/symbol. I hope he retains these tiles and replaces the missing ones with one of the old manufacturers like your family as well!! He can call it the Fleur de Lis Room ...& his China or Stoneware can be in blue and white also ...that used to be very common in 17th and 18th century Europe/France as well ...especially when trade with China became more common ...then European craftsmen came up with more European scenes ...but keeping the blue and white colors. It would be stunning!!! A blue & white kitchen/dining room/family-dining area!

Lovely Dr, can’t wait to see what he does with this beautiful chateau. The story of the Germans occupying the chateau remind me of my stay at Chateau de Bousquet in Normandy. They also occupied that chateau. I was stood at the front entry one morning while the sun was streaming across the stone facade and there etched into the stone was the word NAZI. It was only seen when the light hit it a certain angle. The owners didn’t know it was there. It’s fascinating to be in a place where there are so many layers of history. I lived in Scotland in a 350 yr old house, it took me while to see but in the foot worn stone stairs were fossils from when the east coast was an ancient lake bed.

Dr. Calmont, this idea may be ridiculous, but I will offer it anyway... while working on a restoration of my church, and an addition to the original structure... I was made aware that there are now paints that glow in the dark. They are primarily used, I believe, to highlight emergency exit paths that would be effective when there was no electricity. The objects painted, (aka railings, doors, walls, etc.) are visible in the dark. My idea is an adaptation of such material(s) for the circular stair. I wonder if such technology could be introduced into a basic neutral color (white? cream?) and be used to paint the walls and the stair risers, etc. so that it would look conventional in daylight; but would have an ethereal glow when darkness falls. It wold be a passive system, independent of electricity. As I say, it may be absurd... but I think it is worth considering at least as a partial solution until a more complete solution for the introduction of electric service presents itself. I hope this suggestion may help you in your noble endeavor. Sincerely, and with all best wishes.

IMPO, this is so truly wonderful to see! Such rich history being brought back to new life. What an utterly superb looking castle! Just Wow! As a part French person, this is so refreshing, to see a Frenchman who bought a Chateau in his own country/homeland. This would be an ideal situation, if many more French people could reclaim & purchase many of these stunning Chateaux within their own country, as these Chateaux were built in France & belong to France & are superb, historic pieces of French history & culture. In a sense, they're a living & historic gift, to the peoples of France. Living gems to each ensuing/new French generation. Thank you Dr, for sharing your personal journey with us. I wish you every success in restoring/renovating your new home/Chateau. May you & your nearest & dearest enjoy & share in many happy days ahead there & may many new & wonderful memories be created to be cherished, remembered & handed down through the generations.

I love how he is restoring it to what it was and also is recycling all material. That will give it a Marie authentic feel and look. Very cool! I love when people do this. I don’t like when they destroy the history of the building. These buildings are so unique and that’s good. I don’t like when homes all look the same. It’s boring when they are like that. This is going to be absolutely beautiful when he is done.

The most important thing to do first is replace the roof ! That way, if you ran out of money ...the rest of the chateau is protected. Also wait before you replace the black and white marble tiles. They seem to be well done and they add interest to the vast whiteness of the stone. There are so MANY things to do ...and you may grow fond of them. Unless your budget is vast that is and you are determined to have it look exactly the way it did in the beginning. Black and white tiles look good with potted palms and ferns. Beautiful large antique Chinese urns would be nice ...by placing plastic water catchers with tall lips at the bottom and keep the plants in their original pots and put Spanish moss over the top to hide any unsightly plastic ...that's what I do. Just don't over-water, and your urns will be protected. Also ...keep the antique blue and white Fleur de Lis tiles!!! Their significance to French history can not be overstated! Wasn't that also a symbol of Joan of Arc?

  • @kindlydude

There is another Chateau lady who is English and her husband is (German?) if I remember correctly and she had these delft (?) type tiles or Desvres as you say, replaced by hand ...she is an artist and she either redesigned them but in the old technique or replaced them. (my comment to an artisan manufacturer of these antique tiles who is still in business ...down below)

For the stairs, consider battery-powered motion detecting LED lighting & invest in rechargeable batteries + a solar system to recharge. Many come with a variety of adhesives that will be far less damaging to the stone than drilling into it. If they’re bright enough & come in enough fashionable colors & finishes for kitchens, closets, & hallways, you’re bound to find something that will blend tastefully with the stone walls & stairs while giving sufficient light to navigate in the dark.

I have an idea to bring the electric wires in without being obvious when you’re finished or drilling the stones. It would be a Slow process but when it’s finished it would be aesthetically pleasing post renovation. Grind into the mortar between blocks deep enough to run the wires and then remortar them INTO the wall.. do it a couple blocks at a time to maintain structural integrity. If you wanted to be Super cautious you can measure the width between blocks and install small metal bracers in with the wires on the outer edges and mortar it all in there. Again it would be a Slow process but it would be Flawless when finished. You would Also never have to worry about any varmints chewing the wires.. you’re welcome and if you have any other questions just message me.. I’m full of creative solutions.. it’s what I do.

Я бы устроила там все максимально близко к тем эпохам, в которых они создавались и добавила бы пристройку современного типа, уже для потомков - что бы через 1000 лет изучали архитектуру, строительство и дизайн 2 тысячелетий. What an incredible place! In English, the stairs you have are called "Spiral Staircases".The timber framing that's holds the place up is gorgeous. Just an amazing place all around Antoni. You asked for suggestion on the front house/castle for power. You might try using base boards that are hollow to run power and/or internet, it might not be period correct but I would guess something like that would be easy to blend in. With the awesome fireplace, while huge and beautiful I'd guess much of the heat from any fire will go out the chimney. You might think about putting in a wood burning stove. Something made with soapstone might be ideal as it is supposed to retain the heat from a fire then slowly release it. I've never used one but I know with the older cast iron stoves they release heat very fast so as soon as the fire is out, the heat soon leaves. Anyway, congratulations on your purchase. That place is just amazing!

In Britain this would have probably been acquired by English heritage or National Trust. I think it is wonderful that you are able to have this exciting opportunity. We love our old buildings here and are prepared for many inconveniences for the sake of the history and romance of such buildings. We admire that you are excited, also, to heal this building. It will need love and dedication but it will be a great legacy. Go to the university and offer a small gift of money for someone to research the history of your buildings. They may be able to also use it as a project for their educational qualification. Your building is limestone, not chalk surely, otherwise the rain would have done more damage.

Regarding running electrical wires: Consider hiding them inside a handrail that runs up the spiral staircase. For heat : Consider also using a masonry rocket mass heater construction. (Also use "permaculture" in the search.) It has practically no smoke and can use small pieces of wood. You would build masonry or cement or "mud" benches (possibly covered in tiles) which become warm and then warm the room. I believe it has also been adapted for floor heat. Also a rocket stove in the kitchen.
