This Florida motel was in disarray before coronavirus. The pandemic pushed it over the edge.

Following the economic shutdown propelled by the pandemic, families living paycheck to paycheck were forced to live without power at the dilapidated Star Motel in Kissimmee, Fla., - just down the road from Disney World. The sight alone broke my heart, and now I'm trying to get a closer look at what exactly is happening, and why, and how I can help make it better somehow. Thank you for sharing this story and shedding light to the truth of the matter, including how $13/hour is not only an unlivable wage in 2022, but that it's coming from the filthiest of rich, greed-based conglomerates like Disney - painted as paradise - responsible for keeping good, hardworking people stuck in the quicksand of poverty amidst this years-long global pandemic. Really, really sad and sobering information here. I hope more will see this so we can collectively care to try to help. Thank you again, and best wishes to all enduring the suffering expressed in this troubling representation of what is really wrong here. I hope I can help.

Thank you for sharing this.. This is why I have been angry from the start of the catch frase " We are all in this together." Because it's the farthest thing from reality . We are going threw it together but Not in it together. Things are bad for alot of people and really really bad for even more. Something that is moving toward critical mass, yet you have a person in office that just wants to say how things are getting so much better!! For whom is it getting better for.!?! Because in my personal view what I see in and around my own life nothing has gotten better, most cases worse. And can I let see it continuing down the path of getting worse! Non the less you can hear how smart the young lady is who spoke in the video. Smart both by knowledge and by life experiences. And those being things she should not have to know or experience. So then you just get more people doing what they know and if that's the only kind of stuff you know then that is why the cycle just repeats itself over and over again!! Lastly I worry now that the story will just draw bad attention and eyes to the hotel and the powers move in to make them all leave etc. I can only see that they scrambled to get that cash together and the power company taking that money so easily. Only to come back wanting even more and turning it off anyway. That was alot of money from those people that was needed majorly yet they still lost the money and the power. Rediculous !

@@user-pz2lb1lq5m I don't think me or anyone else has a solution to the issues. But the issues are real.. Kissimmee and Orlando are built around Walt Disney world and universal and tourism in general. Just look up the amount of people being let go from these places . And they offten go by seniority so if people have to shuffle because they can't work were they did then other people lower down get bumped. As for as living many many places in that area want a deposit and you have to prove you male 3 times what the monthly rent is . Never understood my ability to pay the monthly rent has anything to do with if I actually made 3 times what that rent was.. and if they are out of work it's realy unlikely that a place would rent to them .. it seems to me they were paying to live there but the owner left them high and dry the electric company was happy to take that 1500 bucks that they all could have used .. but still wanted more and got shut off anyway .. for anyone to say they just need to do better or point out shortcomings they have and saying they choose theses things are all ways for those people to ignore the situation and act like its not going on. But the government and their decisions have alot to do with things that happen that in turn affect and cause others things to happen that does cause theses issues people are facing

I live in Kissimmee and have been for 15 years. All the hotels and motels house the overwhelming homelessness. The reason why they're not alot of them living on or off the streets in Kissimmee on the 192 strip is cause of the special interests that runs Florida. It's so it discourage people that are homeless to affect Florida's tourism and entertainment, because that's the only thing Florida produces. They would rather kick the homeless off the streets into other parts of Florida then to actually solve the problem themselves.

Why don't cities raise tax revenue from developers and build high rise transitional housing? The place doesn't need to be fancy, but each unit should be safe. Prohibit residents from using drugs and loud music. You can stay for one year and your income goes into an account that you will receive upon your term completion.

So we moved to another hotel. Shortly after that we were sleeping on the streets. Thank goodness we were able to move out of the state. It is shame that people especially children have to go through that. Kissimmee needs to get get their sh** together and fixed the homelessness. Hell I heard that the lot across from daily bread, they planned to build a place for homeless people could get all the help they needed. But it never happened.

After about 10 min, he offered to sell us grass and Valium. We politely declined, and returned to the room.aha The motel wasn’t in this sort of decline back then, but still on the seedier side. @Robert Resch What Jose commented speaks it clearly what is human life that we were born into sin and iniquity. In the first part of the chapter it speaks about being lost and away from God and on down the chapter he asks for forgiveness and help and of course Jesus is quick to accept us as his children and then not only does he give us complete peace and hope but then we are then available to all of his promises and blessings that the Bible says we have and he is faithful and true ALWAYS!!! When I was absolutely at the lowest I think I could have been I cried out to Jesus and he heard me and has brought me up out of ALL my problems and has shown me he is ALWAYS faithful so I don't ever have to worry about worrying ever again praise the Lord!!! So if you ever get so far down there seems no way out call out to Jesus and he will be quick to answer. Anyways I will ask that you see the light. Good night and hope you the best fellow human.

The only reason that I came to God completely humble was my life of sin had fallen completely apart and there was nothing else I could possibly do to fix the problems so I had to asked God if he would help me because I exhausted all possibilities and knew there was no way out but when I cried to God with a broken spirit because I knew I was helpless in my own power. And God did not make me suffer and wait but reached down and touched my spirit and saved my soul and filled me with his holy spirit and I have never been the same and that has been about 15 years ago. So I do not know if you have called out to God humbly like the Bible says. I know I was broken and in the worst way possible which seems like something very bad but through that terrible time the best thing possible came from it and that's the love of Jesus Christ.

I used to live on 192, still live in Orlando and work in the travel tourism business. I'll just say that it isn't even necessarily the wages that make it hard to make it (though obviously the wages are very low), its the lack of stability. IDK how its like in other industries but if the place is busy or understaffed you get 40+ hours, but if its slow or the place is overstaffed you are going to get way fewer hours. It's also not easy to get full time as you typically start part time and go on a wait list for full time and it can take a long time, and if you're part time and the place is slow or overstaffed you may just get scheduled one day a week for 6 hours. It's always blown my mind how people in the UAW are always complaining about everything, yet they get like $25 an hour and great benefits, and work a 9-5 job. In this business the hours are all over the map and you make way less money. TBH i've been working in the industry for 15 years, have been in management for 10, I have a great stable income (for Orlando), I graduated my masters program 4 years ago, and I make about the same amount as the average UAW worker.

@@ericpreuss5849 You raise a good point! I gotta congratulate you to be honest. I sometimes debate with trump supporters and NOT ONCE have they ever raised either a good argument, or contradict mine in any form. Probably because they aren't educated enough to do so. Although I think Biden might do ok since he used to be poor. Plus he was with Obama and I like Obama as president. He had a few mistakes, but Trump's election was a mistake in itself. Politicians are not always honest, but in this case all of the republicans in the current government are. They might say that officials skim off even more money from taxes, but the taxes are coming from their pockets because they are the wealthy. Therefore they gain even more money because the amount of money they gain from taxes is less than the amount of money they would gain from not paying taxes. And this is true because the wealthier you are, the more taxes you have to pay- and it makes sense: if you can spare more many then everyone else, then you should spare more money then everyone else. But I do agree, politicians are corrupt. I think what this country needs is a well educated middle class New Yorker, who has been exposed to all of the races and ethnicities. That way, they know what it is like to be not rich, and they have met people from everywhere, and has sympathized with the homeless. I am a New Yorker so I know from experience.

I lived in this motel for 11 months from Feb 2015 until dec 2016.the fault did lay with the owner of this motel she rented this motel to property managers and I think did not pay the bills.when Ron had this motel all the bills were paid.the owner did not pay the taxes or the mortgage.

So she passed on transitional housing because they wouldn’t accept the dogs? You chose to live in a roach motel with your kids surrounded by crime and drug addicts because you didn’t want to get rid of the dogs? Jesus. Adulting is hard. Do better.

They can be given a living wage but with the cost of everything going up, it won’t help much. They need to some how find a way to leave Florida and go some place where things are more affordable.
