America's Broken Dream: The Middle-Class Families Living in Motels | Poverty in the USA Documentary

The poor bore the brunt of the sub-prime and credit crisis of 2008. Today, it is the turn of the middle class. The impoverishment of the American middle class is brutal. In a country that established liberalism as a creed, there is no safety net. For those who lose their jobs, the consequences are instantaneous and dramatic.
Larry Dodson, 52, used to manage a large customer service department. But two years ago he lost his job and house. Today he lives in a motel room with his wife and two children and scraps by on $820 dollars a month, welcoming tourists to Disney World. After he has paid the motel fees, he’s left with just $70 for food and other necessities.
Terry used to be a sales manager and enjoyed a good life until he was made redundant. He ended up roaming from motel to motel in his car and eventually was judged ’economically incapable’ of raising his six children. The three eldest were placed in foster care. There are currently 1,800 children growing up in the motels around Disney World. They move from school to school as their parents are forced to find cheaper accommodation.
We spent six months following the daily life of families likes these, affected by the crisis.
This documentary was first released in 2012.

As a adopted kid living in the USA, my mom was a single-parent and took care of me and my sister. We went from trailer parks to a women’s homeless shelter and then finally moved back in with my grandma. We were really poor and I grew up thinking it was normal to struggle so much and it was just apart of growing up. My mom passed away in April 2018 when I was 15 years old and I’m 20 now. Been on my own ever since and when the pandemic started I became homeless and stayed on the streets for two years. I’m doing a lot better now and have my own place! It’s not perfect but hey it’s mine. What I learned was that, in America it’s easier to turn a blind eye towards others suffering than it is to see yourself in their place one day. In reality though, we’re all closer to homelessness than most of us care to admit.

@@HappyLife-nf7wb god bless your heart, my mother was a passionate soul and she always brought people together. I can say with confidence that I got where I am because of the pure kindness and selflessness of others! Someone gave me $5 dollars for gas and there was one time where a complete stranger walked up to me while I was playing guitar in the park and offered me his two chicken sandwiches that he decided to give to me instead. I am in Scotland, visited Disney on holiday several times, last time I lost my purse which had keys, a fairly large sum of money and passports, a worker chased us down to who found it and refused to accept a reward, I do not believe that would happen anywhere else in the world. Never was on assistance, but I never took my kids to disney or places like it. I never understood how people could afford it. I educated myself as much as I could. Saved every penny, I could sometimes that meant no Christmas. But eventually I was able to buy my first home. We would go on hikes, outdoor camping or to a lake for family time. My kids are now 26-16 and thankfully are good well-adjusted people. It is difficult but not impossible.

IUDs and implants like Nexplanon are better for people who still want kids in the future. They last for a few years (around 4, iirc) and don't need constant buying to be effective like BC pills would.

Here, I easily support my child and I on a 50% job (19.25 hours a week). My child is in the daycare that my employer provides. How much welfare are these families given per week? I don’t understand how the system works in the USA. I live in England. I know that benefits don’t cover much but it’s enough for a home, utilities & food. In Britain it’s usually previous dept (credit & store card minimum payments) that make life really hard for the long term unemployed. Obviously drugs are part of the ‘real’ homeless problem in Britain. I say “real” because homeless statistics include those in temporary housing, ie people living in hotels, paid for with welfare payments… I assumed that the families in this film were like the British equivalent but it seems like they have to come-up with the rent themselves, without any financial aid!?! ** Do unemployed people need to rely on charity? Why can’t these families get welfare/benefits from a government department? Things are so different in Britain. I complain about UK poverty in “one of the richest countries in the world” but it seems so very much worse in the USA!! 😢 I’m shocked (if it’s true that they aren’t given welfare cheques to pay for rent & living expenses) What happens if they can’t find any work? Are they just thrown out to live on the streets??? It seems crazy to me!! * The government took 3 of their children away because they were so poor. THEN the government pays for those children to be cared for by others??!? WHY not give the family the money? Or at least, more money to buy food, clothes etc??

49:48 The silence after she said "he's at work" is just heart-wrenching. It's too hard on her to tell her kids the truth because she wants to make life seem okay to them. All the time before this, she seemed like she was holding herself up well and trying to make light of the situation, smiling, and she seemed strong and did not cry, but it's at this point that she just seemed to lose all hope. I can tell she was already very jaded, tired, and it felt like she did not have anything else to lose to me with how bad things were, but the situation only got worse. It's just depressing to see her go through this and realize this.

Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire. Personally I hired ‘’"Nicole Ann Sabin"’’ a financial advisor who sets asset allocation that fits my tolerance and risk capacity, investment horizon, present and future goals.

What the general public doesn't realize unless they've been there, that once people are caught in the "poverty loop", life becomes more expensive than somebody that has their life together. Food is more expensive because you're buying it meal by meal with no way to cook, they're burning gas looking for a place to sleep, most likely any bills include late fees, your credit is likely bad which can exclude you from jobs and definitely exclude you from a place to live as well. The things you're not excluded from you will be charged more due to your credit. The uphill battle gets steeper and steeper once you're at this point.

You can come out of it but most likely it takes much longer than most people can deal with it I know from experience the only way out is to find a place to live that you can afford and save the smallest amount of money I lived in the smallest apartment I could find in a rundown area it cost me $100 a week but that included utilities and I had my own shower and bathroom and it had a refrigerator and a stove top so I could cook stuff and keep stuff cold and I worked a seasonal job where I made about for 500 bucks a week for like seven months a year but in the winter time I didn’t make anything except whatever type of work I could come across and it was during the great recession that I was doing this mostly it was just temporary labor jobs or a car wash I worked at McDonald’s for a little while but it took me about six years to finally get my shit together enough to move into a house and to most people they wouldn’t make it six months but like I said the secret is you have to live in someway to save money if you can save $25 a week and $50 a week after your living expenses then you can multiply that number by how many weeks it will take you to advance yourself and if it’s $25 a week you’re able to save well then maybe it will take you Two years of living like that to get them move somewhere else but it’s very hard it’s very hard and there’s a lot of ways to give up

I looked it up, these two little girls ended up in the care of Daniel's mother. I don't know what happened to Daniel he did get off but he had killed another man before that when he was 15 he was 25 in this documentary. This documentary was filmed around 2008 and made it to being released around 2012 in recent, about 2021, Amber had given birth two more times and legally arrested because these two babies these two extra more babies, were found to have been born with meth in their system. I also had to live in a 3 bedroom apartment with 5 other people and each of us was charged $265 a month for rent. I lived on cheap ramen for 5-6 months while working there. I then worked full time in entertainment at the Magic Kingdom for 3 years and left making only $8.50/hour, and that was with a 50 cent show bonus. That place is glorified slave labor.

I did the same thing for Six Flags over Texas in an internship. Four people to an apartment and $400 each. When one got a better job, our rent went up. I had to work 60 hours or more to save money. And I worked myself out so much I got delirious and lost track of what day it was. We only got $5.50 per hour. Those amusement parks can trick people. We were each supposed to run the entire park for 1 day. It never happened. I ended up having to do a project with the Fool-the-Guesser game. And gave a presentation on it. Ran that the entire summer and worked for other people in the booths with basketball hoops/goals.

They are bringing children into the world who will be traumatized by poverty they never chose. Then, a 21 year old with two kids living out of the car... No job, of course. He's put in that role by the abhorrent people that are his parents. If I was a social worker I'd be happy to just create a plan with the older brother what will happen for him and his kids. The brother who's probably not even in high school yet is more of a man than his dad. Biologically his dad's an adult, in every other way absolutely not. For 2 years now, every restaurant, hotel, jail, country club, factory etc has been needing employees. They would hire you on the spot. Southern Indiana has a Toyota plant that has needed 500 workers for 2 years. Starting pay is $30/HOUR. Every business i sell and know of is the same way.
