They're using LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries which have less energy than more typical ternary Li-ion like NCA and NMC (NCA and NMC employ nickel and cobalt which can have significant environmental, humanitarian and safety issues). LFP avoids all these issues and offers 2x to 3x the life of NCA and NMC. The only drawback to LFP is about 35% less energy storage capability. However, the newest version (due to start manufacture in 2024) is LMFP which adds manganese to the cathode. LMFP offers a substantial increase in energy density over standard LFP. LMFP has a gravimetric energy density of 240 Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 525 Wh/l which are close to NCA and NMC. They can also last up to 4000 full charge cycles (NMC and NCA are typically good for only 1500 charge cycles).LMFP could allow Edison to offer a version of this truck with battery only or give the existing truck about 30% more range.

@Tron-Jockey edison could actually offer a very functional all electric version of this already, they would have competitive range at lower speeds compared to the rest of the market. Being that this truck is designed for almost exclusively offroad use, that low speed thing isn't a detriment. If they take full advantage of the electric semi weight break in the U.S. it's even better.

I love the mindset behind this truck. Today's trucks have so many parts made of plastic. They have been designed to save the manufacturer costs and time during assembly. That's good for them, but you're stuck with a cheaply built truck that costs you more than the manufacturer saved in both expense and time. The CEO here gets it, he was a trucker before he was a truck builder. I feel confident that he will succeed. The only reason truckers buy today's truck is because there isn't any other choice.

    7 ай бұрын

@@Luca-gj4yi I have owned trucks going back to 1979. Trucks inside and out from that era were made to last and be easy and inexpensive to repair. Go back and listen to the exchange surrounding the dimmer switch. The CEO was trying to explain his logical choice to Sandy, and Sandy was worried about dirty boots. Mount a boot brush to the step... problem solved. Sandy is an engineer and I value his expertise, but his POV, his business is advising large OEMs on how to make things cheaper, easier, and faster. The CEO mentioned plastic air lines. OEMs like plastic air lines because they can be used together with quick connect fittings and save 15 mins on the assembly line. Quick connect fittings will begin to leak before the truck expires. There are probably 100 of these fittings on a truck, many that are impossible to get to without disassembling components to get at them. An air leak anywhere on the truck can have you put "out-of-service" on the side of the road and the truck either has to be towed or repaired right there before the truck is allowed to be moved. These fittings are an ongoing headache for truck owners. Many hours and much expense to maintain them. 15 mins to the good of the OEM...15 years of grief and expense for the truck owner. Modern trucks are increasingly built with proprietary vital parts instead of the off-the-shelf parts of yesterday. If you're operating in a remote location or you break down in one, you won't find these parts at the closest truck parts distributor and you will, like the OEM explained will be multiple times more expensive and you will most likely have to wait days and pay expediting fees to get the part shipped to you...why, because it somehow benefits the OEM, either faster assembly or more profits from parts sales. Truck cabs take a beating because the suspension has to be designed to handle heavy loads. Truck cabs sit over a solid front axle that usually have stacked leaf springs. That is not going to be a plush ride! Plastic interior parts: plastic HVAC ducting and actuators, plastic dashboards, plastic gauges rattle and break down before the truck expires... again, proprietary, over-priced replacement parts. Unless you have experienced what I'm describing, you may find it hard to get your mind around. This CEO understands! Truck owners understand. OEMs are too busy looking to barely out-do each other while extracting as much as possible from their customers.

The Tesla Semi that PepsiCo have been running apparently does about 1.7kWh per mile, so assuming electricity is 0.20/kWh (California) that would be $340/1000 miles. A similar diesel truck uses about 7.25mpg, at $6.40/gal (again in Cali) for a cost of $885/1000 miles. See So if you put 100k miles a year on the vehicle that's about $54,500 a year just in fuel savings, for a semi operating in California. In BC where these guys operate it's $2/litre and 0.12/kWh I believe, so that would be $1015 of diesel vs $205 in electricity. That's about $80k per 100k miles savings. Chace shows zero educational background or professional qualifications in his LinkedIn profile... only his experience as owner of SEI Logistics (the solar trailer company) and CEO of Edison Motors. Any rational professional lists relevant background in their LinkedIn profile. There was a mention in one video that he has a university degree... in history. I don't think there is anyone in the company with technical qualifications; Eric has some qualifications in investment services. I'm not criticizing Chace for a lack of education or technical qualifications. He doesn't claim them and others shouldn't claim them for him.

@@brianb-p6586Chace and his business partner bought their 1st logging truck (it was sitting in a field, if I recall correctly) for $4000. Overhauled and rebuilt it; ran it for years. Made $$ and bought more trucks. Point being, they certainly learned a lot repairing that 1st logging truck, and have only gotten more knowledge and experience since then. (Chace also drove logging trucks before they owned that 1st truck.) If Elon Musk does not care about education as much as problem solving ability... Also: R G LeTourneau started out as a construction contractor. He kept building his own equipment because he came up with better designs than what he could afford to buy, so he built his own. He never went past 8th grade, but was a naturally skilled designer/builder, and was a legendary crazy hard worker. Reading his book "Mover of Men and Mountains", he said he had a hard time figuring out if he was a construction contractor or a heavy equipment manufacturer.

One point missed here is that this EV Truck design is much much much more realistic even for everyday trucking. Saves on fuel and saved on wear and tear of the diesel engine since in this application, the engine runs at a steady rpm as it is only used to recharge the battery. Unfortunately that was let well covered here.

I've been following Edison Motors for over a year now on social media. In a world where greed tends to be the norm, It's been so inspiring to see this project go from developing the concept to into finishing the production prototype the way this has. It's so common to see someone start a project for noble reasons, just to see them abandon their vision and morals just a quickly because an opportunity for a quicker pay day presented itself. I have no doubt that dozens of those opportunities presented itself in the time it took to get this truck from It's consception, all the way to this EV show but his words, ethics and vision has stayed rock solid. The only thing that makes me sad is that I'm too poor to monetarily contribute to it's continued development and success.

Congrats to Chase & team for taking on the risks & challenge of providing an innovative solution for a niche industry that the existing big players have no motivation to provide. Clearly no MBA mindset engaged here 😁 - the "design by truckers for truckers" is evident with their robust design decisions for addressing the costly downtime scenarios that poor quality/failure prone design decisions made by the big players who place a higher importance on the value of the revenue stream that service & spare parts provides. I wish Chase & the Edison Motors every success for their future!

Going fully loaded downhill the quarry, it produces more electricity than it consumes returning uphill empty. It's pure electric, no combustion engine. During the night some of the excess electricity stored during the day in the battery is discharged to the power grid.

Not sure if this was answered by an earlier comment but an Electric Front Drive axel is an option as well as a triple rear axels. With Chases trucks, they are typically custom spec-ed by the buyer. Also, another idea Chase has is putting electric drive axels on the trailer to help with steep grades/muddy roads/snow traction as well as added regen-motors for the batteries. Another flexible option is for generator motors that use different fuels if they wanted something other than a diesel engine. Propane, Gas, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, etc. A lot of these things have been discussed on the Edison YT Channel during the build process.

  • @brianb-p6586

There is no driven front axle option because there no product yet. They have talked about a driven front axle, but haven't built a prototype of a truck with one yet, and haven't allowed for one in the design. There is no "typical" buying process for something that no one has been able to purchase yet. The idea of driven trailer axles, or even specifically electrically driven trailer axles, is not new. Edison people have talked about it, but have not done anything about it. That's true of alternative engine and fuel types, and various other ideas... they're just obvious ideas, not part of the reality of this truck or company.

Everyone seems to think tucking is only the semis you see driving down the road. And when you hear about electric trucks you think of a larger version of an electric car. There is a whole separate industry that is about heavy hauling. Where as Tesla is looking at all electric, aerodynamic, short range bespoke rig that will have to be replaced in 10 years, Edison is designing a truck that will last 3 score or more years (that’s 60 years for those who’s don’t want to convert in your head). The Edison truck is flexible, rugged, and repairable. Right to repair for Edison motors means a fault code has plain English on the problem and part numbers if a replacement is needed, without ever leaving the cab of the truck. Don’t need a diesel, swap out the generator for a LMP or hydrogen powered one, add a fuel cell, or just add more batteries for all electric. Old school reliability and longevity coupled with modern technology and unbeatable torque and power of an electric axle. Edison is going to change the trucking industry the same way diesel electric trains replaced steam locomotives.

Elon Musk is a hype man, not an engineer. He can sell the public and shareholders on a product, but he's shit at actually designing things. Where his companies (which have been legion) actually do well is where Elon steps back to leave his engineers to do the job he pays them for, instead of micromanaging. I don't get that vibe from Chace. He's much more down to earth instead of head-in-the-clouds like Musk.
