🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🔧 Bespoke Manufacturing: Handcrafted to Your Needs 🔧
The manufacturing process at Edison Motors is a testament to their commitment to customer satisfaction. Each Edison Truck undergoes a meticulous five-step process, from frame and rolling chassis preparation to final touches and rigorous testing. The focus is on building a truck that reflects the customer's requirements, embracing the philosophy of "Building The Truck Of The Future With The Quality Of The Past."
🔌 Electric or Diesel-Electric: Your Power, Your Choice 🔌
Edison Motors offers both fully electric and diesel-electric vocational trucks based on customer demands. The onboard generator ensures continuous operation in areas lacking charging infrastructure.
💡 Advantages of Electric: Power, Torque, Longevity 💡
Edison Trucks bring increased power, torque, reliability, and longevity. Inspired by electric freight trains, regenerative ability harnesses energy for efficient uphill climbs.
⚙️ Efficiency Redefined: Diesel-Electric Technology ⚙️
Diesel-electric technology delivers peak load demand energy supply. Batteries initiate movement, and the diesel generator recharges the battery, capturing braking energy for restarts. The generator's constant RPM eliminates turbo lag.
🌿 Environmental Benefits: Paving the Way for Change 🌿
Diesel-electric technology results in up to 70-100% fuel savings, directly correlating to a 75%-100% reduction in diesel exhaust. Smaller lithium batteries mean less environmental damage. Diesel-electric offers a practical transition to electric for energy-intensive trucking industries. Generator diesel engines ensure optimal fuel/air ratio, contributing to a hotter and cleaner burn of emissions.

I really can't wait to see the next truck with the full E-axes in place. personally, I like the batteries external; it makes them easier to access and remove with only a small shop hoist if need be. swapping them forward would be good for sure. I honestly LOVE the design philosophy of having all the components as separate modules built around a centralized frame. it makes everything so accessible and easy to repair, maintain, and inspect.

As a heavy duty mechanic I love this. I work at a refuse fleet shop. We had a Mack electric demo and it only could run half the day with range and carry half the weight of our cng and diesel trucks because of the added weight. I would love to see the industry switch to this concept it's the right stepping stone of being more eco friendly than demanding full electric when the tech can compete right now love the channel!

I also work on trash trucks. We often get trucks at the end of the day that have to do parked regens. Drivers park the truck and start the regen then we have to go shut it off once it is done. I often think of how a diesel electric could just run a regen whenever it wanted to. Conventional trucks can't regen in stop and go conditions but the diesel electric ones could. I used to drive school buses and they had the same problem. Sometimes all they needed to fix the problems with the exhaust was a good drive on the highway for 30 minutes. A diesel electric bus could handle that problem so much better plus having the range of a diesel with the added MPG of electric drive.

I read somewhere that trash trucks are the perfect (and almost only) application where gas turbine/battery/electric works...and there for some reason it works splendidly. Has something to do with the repeated starting/stopping of the use case.

@@toddmarshall7573 that's why the electric truck was semi okay because during the route the truck was perfect stop and go wasn't using hardly any battery for the route itself especially with regenerative braking being utilized well. The issue was driving to and from route killed so much battery due to the weight of truck and allowable space for batteries that it was very non practical for our fleet but a hybrid would solve both problems

@@jaysonsears8686 It's the Prius model. As I said, there's an article out there somewhere about it working with a gas turbine. Diesel would use same principle and work better at sea level. Regenerative braking would have almost no effect. It's all about being at the optimal point on the power curve for the ICE for efficiency.

Great job getting a prototype together and making it run. So many companies spend decades trying to be perfect on the first try. It's way faster and cheaper to slap something together and find out what you don't know right now. Surprised the Telsa motor doesn't have an easy way to set a phase-current or torque limit. Could always replace the bearing and output shaft on that side, but that's a lot of work for an Alpha prototype you know will get rebuilt or scrapped.

This thing is awesome! On bended knee, make the battery packs removable so you can swap them out and charge them outside the truck. Why? Because you wouldn't have an impact driver with a built in battery. You want a swappable battery. This truck is a tool and a battery pack that can be charged outside the vehicle is key to EV's. It also makes it so the battery pack can be replaced and serviced without down time if you have a spare pack.

You should add in some redundancy’s to increase the usability and reliability further. Things like a plug on both sides. This adds ease of use in a crowded yard and a backup to help diagnose problems. Another one is ability to have the generator directly power the motor. Doing this would help the heating issue during charging and will extend the life of the battery. It also allows the truck to run even if the battery eats it or there’s a problem with the charging system.

@@N-M424 but what's wrong with that? people don't need cutting edge daily drivers and work trucks. they just need something that Works, that is easy to fix, that has abundant parts for repairs, etc. The LAST thing you want is an experimental technology and scarce parts from using highly specialized designs that only are on you low volume vehicle. you want parts you can go to the parts store and get. cars and trucks should not be relying on cutting edge tech if you care about sustainability. if sustainability is the goal, then the ONLY thing you should be caring about is keeping cars on the road as Long as Possible (in safe working condition). The simpler and easier to work on their are, using readily available high volume parts, the easier you're going to achieve that goal.

@@N-M424 this is how "startups", motivated people with work ethic and a vision, etc. work. They work Fast. it's corporations and gov encumbered by fear, red tape, approvals, permits, worrying about liability, trying to create get rich quick schemes, not valuing or taking care of their customers, etc. that can't get crap done.

I find your trucks interesting. While going for a efficient hybrid type setup. Maybe look into a waste heat recovery system. Since your operating the engine as a generator to power the truck at mostly steady state conditions. I think a system that incorporates a boiler in the engine exhaust to turn some type of generator to further get either more charging or use it to run only the cabin items to focus power to the batteries and E-axels? Thought?

Great Video. Amazing progress you guys make in such a short timeframe. One tip for the video production though. Invest in a good lavalier mic. The sound at the moment is dragging the rest of the video down.

ive been thinking about the solar trailers, imagine you have a company with 12 trailers, you dont work on weekends, if those are hookedup and you are selling power that could be a nice income for just having them, or if your a lone trucker you could put a slight dent in your powerbill on the weekends

honestly diesel electric is so cool. It's like a freight train, but smaller. I've long been saying diesel electric was the future. For industrial use especially, sure, but I mean, it's the best of both worlds without the worst of either.

Have you thought about the front wheel drive assist that's hydraulically driven for off road help they now make (I forgot the company name) but would be a great option for these loging trucks and use a brushless pump or drive it off the generator an just start it when needing the front wheels to help

It will all work out and be something that your proud of and that many others will be proud to have parked in their yard.

OK so we're making changes. Well improvements. Good don't be set in stone. Question. Could you run say a Cummin's 8.3L Turbo? Or even smaller Diesel, now that you have a cooled, sealed, Generator? Less cost, and weight. Could you have attached a 2 speed rear to your truck to mesh better with the Tesla drive unit? Just askin'? Thanks for your honesty, it's refreshing in this World. WB

You are really starting to get heavy on these trucks, I can't imagine these retrofit trucks being able to scale 40,000lbs in the trailer with the amount of weight already involved in the components. A cantilever air lift axle, like flatbeds use, you're talking another 500lbs of added components. It would be better to have an electric disconnect for one E axle, the tires would still be rolling but the one axle wouldn't be pulling voltage while empty or bobtailing.

Could have used a planetary output bolted the the end of the Tesla motor. A cheap and simple setup would have been a planetary gear reduction unit from a diesel pickup truck. 2.7:1 reduction with a 6 planet gear setup and capable of dealing with 1000 ft-lbs and relatively easy to adapt.

Motor per axle makes sense for the back but what about a motor per wheel up front? More weight forward (even if it takes a bite out of the savings you've made) and more traction too. You might be able to get away with a motor that can pivot and have only the outer CV joint.
