This Desk Gadget is NOT What You Think It Is...

Ғылым және технология

The PlayDate is one of my favorite desk accessories of all time because it can do so much more than just play games. In this video I will demonstrate how I use the PlayDate to be more productive at my desk setup!

Nice one! I actually have a Playdate myself, but I really need to give that planner app a shot I've really had my eye on it! My solution for the last year has been Rocketbook, I have a flip pad and I cut one of the pages out. I write a to-do list on it, I can back it up, transcribe the title and wipe it with a wet cloth to erase. Also got another A5 one for KZread notes. It's another good analog solution!

“I know the PlayDate is the strangest device I’ve ever made a video about” It’s the reason why I found you on KZread and why I’m staying. I got one myself and everything you said felt very recognisable.

I love my Playdate too and I hadn’t thought of trying these apps. I also thrive on novelty and creating unique workflows and systems. This video is also cool timing for me, as I am a developer and trying to think of what I could build for the tiny console. I hadn’t even thought about a non-game app. Do you have any ideas for something you wish existed?

An eBook reader… sounds crazy, but having a place to throw ePubs / txt / rtf files and view them on that B&W display could be really neat, like a miniature kindle. Especially if the filing system is a joy to navigate, and the device remembers where each file was last scrolled to. Could even integrate with the easy-reading version of Instapaper or maybe display RSS feeds. Another idea is a Word of the Day app; launch it and it shows a random word and its definition. Maybe add some whimsicality where shaking the playdate, or spinning the crank flips through other random words with a playful almost slot-machine inspired animation.

Personally, I'd like to have an alarm, a calculator, and a command-style memo. I think it's interesting to have an application that allows you to crank through a specific to-do list and get statistics, or to view your mood and achievement rate in a specific format.

You can, this is a niche product that’s for sure but there’s a market for it still. The software provide for game development is simple (no coding required) and there’s a lot of free games for play date.

Cool idea and an awesome video, you always deliver! However, I truly don't get your decision to base this concept on the term "analog." PlayDate does not feel analog, just like a Casio F-91W does not feel analog, despite being far more simple than a PlayDate. A hand crank or tactile buttons do not make a digital device feel analog. "This is offline, this is old-school" ≠ analog either. Plenty of offline, old-school devices are digital. I think better terms would be intentional simplicity, minimalist design, internet-free device, etc.

Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback. I believe you are correct, analog may not be the most accurate term but I thought it was the term that would get the message across for most people who've never touched one before, if that makes sense. Similar to the screen, it's not actually "e-ink", but it's the closest term I think most people would understand. Again, thanks for the feedback!

I completely understand that reaction. That's a big reason why I didn't end this video with a recommendation for people to buy. It's a lot for a very niche solution.

it's just tech and devices addiction at this point, gadget p0rn or watever you can call it. Admit you just like beautiful gadget and tech and in no way using this Playdate as a planner is useful. You will stop using it after a week. I dont want to sound too negative, i like your channel still because i like tech and gadget too lol
