Yes to DB2. Always good seeing the roots of a manufacturer that's lasted this long and often plays to its heritage.

That's an utterly gorgeous car, looks incredible, sounds incredible, it's the whole package! A properly old school straight six is tough to beat for a soundtrack!

Probably the best car you've ever driven.

Jesus, wasn't expecting that straight 6 straight to my ears immediately. Gave me shivers. If you fancy a go in a Spitfire, I have a Mk4 1300 sat in my driveway that I might be able to get permission for you to have a drive of.

Series 2 DB4 was our only family car growing up in the 80s - made quite an impression on me!!

I love the blues brothers reference. One of my favourite films.

I am not shure if I should tell you. My first „old car“ was an Aston Martin DB4. I bought it back in 1980 for 3.000 £! I thought, it was very heavy on the steering and definitely nothing for London traffic! However, the worst was the spare parts prices! When the dealer offered me 5000£ for the car 6 month later, I happily accepted! However, now I wish I still had it. At the time, an Aston was cheaper than an E Type, because of the cost of spare parts! This seems no argument today😊!

@@JayEmmOnCars Really enjoyed the video, liked the presenting style, the car was gorgeous and as for the exhaust note, l wish it was the ring tone on my phone! l only live a few miles from the Aston workshops in Newport Pagnell and drive past on a weekly basis, still occasionally see older Astons parked up awaiting work.

It gives me great joy to see a 62-year-old car being driven and raced so casually. Well done to Nigel. And that soundtrack!

A cracking car the DB4. I remember in the dark days of the late 80s early 90s and the financial crash, seeing an Aston Martin DB2/4 with race history for sale at £25,000. If only I had the money.

My dream car. For me, perfection. Thank you.

What a sound (not noise). I love that. And the DB4 is (in my opinion) the best looking in the 4-5-6 line. Thank you for this video. Regarding sound: Several years ago I came to a red traffic light where a DB5 was waiting for the green light. I stopped at his side and lowered the window (of my then daily Mini MK2) and the Aston-driver understood immediately. Hmmmm...that sound!

This has one of the best sounding engine/exhaust notes I’ve ever heard! Impressive.

As a teenage member of our local car club, I was in a party on a tour of Aston Martin's works at Newport Pagnell. The body formers for the DBR4 GP car were being assembled, so I imagine it must've been 1959 or thereabouts. The Tadek Marek twin cam straight six engines were all run on a test bed prior to installation and that gorgeous drone, heard all over the works - and probably the village as well - lives with me still, as does the sight of the long exhaust pipes from the test bed to the exterior, glowing red from the engine to the wall. Of course, the cars were largely bespoke, but one of the niceties on offer was 'would sir prefer two, or three eared spinners for the wheels?'

Proper, proper car with just enough sensible mods to make it an enjoyable drive. Total respect to the owner for using it as he does and letting you demo it on your channel. The too unique to risk driving much has regrettably afflicted me so that the only time my AM prototype ventured out in 2022 was when you drove it for this Channel. Less than 300 miles this year so total respect to the bravery of Nigel 👍

My favourite car looks wise.Back in the 70s when I was a kid the posh house behind us in Fulham had two of them both silver and one convertible.Used to help wash them for free just to see them 😊

I am incredibly jealous as you have to have one of the best jobs in the world (EVER! Said in Clarksons voice!) You get to drive all kinds of cars, some incredibly cool like this DB4, some weird, some wonderful, some bad but ALL interesting and all with their own tale to tell and driving experience of their own. Hi Jay, I grew up with Nigel. We went to school together and have stayed in touch ever since, even though I now live in Melbourne Australia. For my 40th birthday Nigel drove me up to Newport Pagnell in his 1970 DBS for lunch and a tour of the Aston works. What a day that was. And just a few years back Nigel drove me and my 90 year-old mother (who drove us to pre-school in her Austin 1100!) to the pub in the wonderful DB4 you drove in the video. It was great to see Nigel included in a little cameo in your video! You’ve done a wonderful job of filming the DB4 on the road and there’s no question it’s a very special car. It’s been an absolute joy to see this video and I wish you every success with all your future motoring videos (including one of the DB2/4 perhaps!). All best wishes from Down Under, Mac

Okay, you've convinced me. This initially looked like an Aston Martin without bumpers, but now, it sounds like a truly fun car. That beautiful looking engine is actually a work of aluminium art.

You know it's going to be something special when James lets the engine and the exhaust do the introduction. What a beauty! Nothing beats the sound of a long-stroke straight-six - it could be this Aston or the Bristol/BMW engine, but it can just as well be the much more affordable Triumph 6-cylinder.

My favorite was always the DB-4GT Zagato. Good luck seeing one of those in person 😜 I was a mechanic in a CA Aston specialty shop for a while. Our biggest project was a DB-6 left hand drive conversion. We stuck the only 50 DCOE Weber carbs I ever saw on that car. In the end 45's made more power.

Not only did I see a Zagato, I saw it racing! And not only did I see it racing, I saw it crashing at Zolder too, in a race with the Ferrari 250 GTO that sold at auction a few years ago. Those were the days!

Lovely, now for the best straight 6 noises I recommend any lightly tuned M88/S38 with a relatively open exhaust. It’s anti-socially loud but the tone is lovely

I worked at Astons for 10 years, The DB4 is the one I would like to own

A very lovely car.... but. I did a track day with a direct comparison of a race prepared Aston and an E-type. I really, really wanted the Aston to win, but the E-type was the better car dynamically. Both are way out of my chances of ownership, but it was a great day out.

@@JayEmmOnCars The E-type was pinpoint sharp in all departments. Unassisted racing brakes are a joy to behold. Definitely felt the same pain with that shonky Aston gearbox. Heel and toe, crunch, heel and toe, grind, heel and toe, graunch... bugger it.

You've got the bug now James 😉 They really are so much fun and no one will ever take the piss out of you. Absolute quality 👌

I may have told you that I have a 2002 Audi TT roadster which my dad gave to me earlier this year. It may sound a bit boring, but it really isn't. It always amazes/horrifies me viewing some of the Brit car reviews how (insanely) fast you drive on those narrow, winding roads - often with high hedges/walls obstructing the view around the next curve. BTW : I am an Export from England. PS I live in a comparatively hilly part of rural Ontario. A few years ago my Dad's 75 year old cousin visited. While driving her from the airport she commented on how wide, straight and SLOW our roads were...

I had 1800 e, s and es as well bud and they were fast, you could cruise at a 100,original road test put them near a 3ltr capri in performance.

@@mikewaite3746 yes bud, used to run them all the time, went to the south of France in a 1800 E, absolutely used to be flat out everywhere, unburstable engine, you could click the ecu up a bit to get a bit more juice in, I used to chop a coil off to lower them as well, had 4 in all.

Along with the fact that one of the Bond DB5's was an updated DB4, the DB2/4 you will hopefully drive next also has a Bond link. The only Aston driven by Bond in the books (Goldfinger) was a DB 2/4 Mk 3!

Anyone else just hearing that scene in Goldeneye with the 355??!!

True Superleggera construction (unstressed sheet aluminium over thin steel tubes, wrapped in hessian or with rubber pads, against corrosion) is not strong enough to take suspension or crash loads, so required a steel chassis. The Gallardo Superleggera is a modern blend of carbon and aluminium, with no little steel tubes. Even the DB6 (whose rear end styling for reduced lift, I really like) was not full Superleggera.
