Yep it was more aimed at the F1 box in the Ferrari. Matt Farah is the one I remember hearing about the Aston being so bad he spent tens of thousands to get it to be a manual. Ended up finding out underneath it’s a H pattern box with a robot shifting it. But let’s be honest the v12 is two Taurus V6s welded together and today AM has a AMG German biturbo so officially complaining about it being bad at shifting is just funny. Because no one daily’s a car that was one of.. a few thousand made?

  • @johnsim3722

DB7 had a lot of changes off the Jaguar XJR that many believe it came from. It was TWR who did the development and they cut the length back, repositioned the cabin, re-engineered the rear sub frame, and then did the same as the front. The i6 block was from Jaguar, but everything else was bespoke to Aston, and ultimately Jaguar never used that i6 block so it ended up being bespoke to Aston! The V12 engine was based upon the Ford V6 as you state, using all the knowledge and parts where possible to create a superb engine. What you got was a unique engine for Aston that had far more development by Ford than Aston could have afforded. Nothing bad there. On the plus side, if you talk to the Aston clubs you'll get access to a list of compatible parts as many were shared between Aston and Ford / PAG (Premier Automotive Group). As for Clarkson, it's not just that he makes a comment on a car but lazy journalists simply copy him verbatim. They don't even bother making their own mind up but simply repeat what he says! If you want a bad SMG have a look at the Toyota MR-S (MR-2 in the UK), third series. It was terrible. Later cars got better, and that can be retro fitted back to the originals. When it comes to the manual conversion, it was first offered by one of the independent Aston specialists. It might have been Bamford Rose, it might have been Aston Workshop. I can't honestly remember, but talk to them about sourcing the manual conversion if that's what you're interested in attempting. I suspect it's not a trivial upgrade with much of the automated shifting mechanisms needing removed. Vanquish original doesn't seem to be going up much in value, but the S variant certainly holds more value. The Vanquish is still the most beautiful car there's ever been. And Ian Callum is also now offering an updated version where he'll also convert the gearbox to either a manual or full automatic if you wish. Callum of course is a design genius.

The way it uses the clutch is also clunky. You can't really adjust the aggressiveness of the clutch action on the fly (unlike a manual transmission). Also if you compare it with same sequential transmissions in racecars (WRC, GT1, GT3....), it's slower to shift. Ferrari managed to do it better (still clunky in automatic mode though).

Before you replace all the ignition coils check for oil pooling around the spark plugs. The rubber seals around the PVC plumbing get tired and leak, sometimes causing oil to pool around the plugs and misfires. I would strongly recommend a little research in the Vanquish section on the AMOC forum as there's loads of great info in there that will help with your diagnostics and repair.

If the car is an automated manual you can just remove the actuators and have an engineer design a selector, and maybe some ECU flashing. That would be cheaper and then you can sell the kit. Kind of the same process that BMW e46 people do with their transmission. Only difference is that you can get those parts from a manual car

In addition, automated manuals were new to alot of drivers, it is a lot like when Nissan began to introduced or what i called "forced fed" the CVT transmission to their product lineup back in 2003...The reviews by the media were brutal to say the least.

Aston were always users of hand-me-downs; parts-bin specials. Maybe not so much in the 1950s, or perhaps even the 60s, but when the oil crises hit and Aston went into their 70s dry spell, they were using all sorts of components from major suppliers. From their point of view it made a lot of sense - the bought-in components were properly engineered and manufactured, cheap because of volume, and most likely with a budget that exceeded Aston's budget for the engine.
