The Best Barn Find Classic Car I've ever discovered. Will it run?
In this episode Jonny Smith pinches himself when he finds what could be the ultimate unicorn classic car, worth up to £300,000. This is a 1959 Aston Martin DB4 that hasn't been started up since 1982 at the earliest, and has been 'abandoned' gathering dust ever since. But why the rotten bumper? Why the tow bar? Who was the famous owner? All is explained in this special episode.

Anybody else get goose pimples when that engine started? I’m not sure how TLBS is going to top this one. Magnificent car and a great history. It would be great to see this Aston returned to its former glory?! Can’t believe it was used to reverse a boat into the water! Mind boggles. 😳🤯

My grandfather's cousin had a c1 corvette with a tow hitch on it. When my grandfather told me that I was blown away. My grandfather said "it was just a vehicle meant to be used".
I have no doubt that the owner Paddy could have got it up and running entirely independently, but he chose to share it with The Late Brake Show and us. So my thanks and gratitude go to Paddy for inviting us in for a glimpse of this rare car, and to the LBS team for doing what they do.

Always steered clear of people who give themselves nick names and it's proved correct until today. Being an "engineer" which it seems is a word applied liberally here, I would have known the effects of rust and protected the rusted areas BEFORE parking the vehicle. Yes, between other jobs and my wife's cancer, life certainly got in the way...
Inspired me to get my, even older, DB MK III going. It's all original and my dad bought it new in 1957, drove it a little and mostly parked it. I fell in love with it, I think before I could walk, and played with it, studied it, and tinkered with it throughout the 70's and 80's. Drove it to high school once, drove it regularly for a while in the mid-80's. It's in the queue for restoration after stripping the trim for painting. No corrosion and all there... Think I'll get started again...

I was gobsmacked to see this. I interviewed Paddy for a business magazine 15 years or more ago. A great talker and quite matter of fact about his achievements. He is the only true polymath I've ever met. As I recall, he has had books published on wildlife as well. He mentioned the DB4 as a project but he had so much else going on that it wasn't top of his 'to do' list.

Again a perfect example of why these barnfinds will never, ever get old! Each has it's own unique back story and this one is as brilliant as all the others! Jonny's natural, relaxed interaction with the owners does the rest. Thanks heaps and hats off to you guys for shining your ever-so exhilarating light on this corner of the internet! 👌
In 1997 l bought my first barn find car, a 62 Alfa Giulietta. The car was in a barn, covered and completely intact. When l watched you two prepare to turn the crank to see if it had seized l got the same knot in my stomach on that chilly fall day 25 years ago when we did this with the Alfa. It turned so l was overjoyed for Johnny and Paddy. I still have it with seven other classics, two of them a Dino 308 GT4 and a 58 Corvette were also barn/garage finds. The Dino turned and the Corvette was seized. Congratulations on bringing the DB4 back to life. Such a beautiful car,!

Anyone else get goosebumps when the DB4 finally fired into life? What a car, and what a garage. Excellent episode once again, thanks Jonny and Paddy (and Rufus of course)!
An AMAZING find! When I was about 18 I used to LUST after a 1961 DB4 which lived very close by. When I heard it firing up I'd go to the front garden to see the lovely light metallic blue missile whizz past. (He used to drive quite quickly.) It ended up in a local garage, for sale at £1400. (This was 1973/4.) The garage owner was a bit of a "chancer", and had let the tank go down so low there wasn't enough petrol to be lifted by the pump. (Had it started & I'd driven it, I'd probably have bought it!) Next day, I was flagged down by a "car mad" neighbour. (He used to run Mk1, then Mk2 Lotus Cortinas, all sorts of fast cars. He asked if I'd "heard about that Aston for sale?" When I said yes, I was on my way to test drive it, he said "Don't bother. "$$$$$" had it out last night and put a rod and piston through the block" At the time, a rebuild (with no damage) was about £4,700. Had I bought it, it too would have "been my pension". Great to hear it run - and it didn't sound so bad, did it? Lastly, my late brother had a German Wire-Haired Pointer. She was a lovely, most definitely a one-man dog - and a great gun-dog. Thanks for a great video.
i love the way he created a 1:18 scale model as a POC. what a lad.
My god that car is unstoppable. It's like Wolverine on four wheels. It just refuses to die. Amazing recovery after 40 years idle. Paddy really knows what he's doing. It's always a pleasure to watch experts doing their thing.
Paddy is an incredible fella. I would love to hear more of his own story, and a series documenting his restoration of this stunning Aston would be amazing!

Wonderful to see Paddy and Jonny in their element. Helps to remind me why I purchased my 1971 RHD De Tomaso Pantera as a box of bits back in about 1993. Work, life and family have prevented me from getting around to restoring and rebuilding it. The Late Brake Show is definitely giving me the urge to put the time aside to bring the car back to life. One day Jonny I will give you a call and we can lay all the parts out on the drive including the 5.7L V8 engine and the ZF gearbox. Don't worry, I also have another car that has a dynamo, a regulator and a pair of twin 40 weber downdrafts that you can try to start, so you can use the can of hope. 😉
Devon is a treasure trove of barn finds. With an hours drive of that car I know of a road version 429 Cobra, a Lancia Stratos, 2 Allards, a Capri RS3100, a beautiful Vincent Black Lightening and a Brough Superior SS100 (in carboard boxes). Drive another half hour and there's a barn with over a hundred cars including a series 1 Range Rover, 4 ex-Bundeswehr G-Wagons and a Boehinger Unimog.
When I first saw the DB4, my first thought was 'Not a hope of ever getting that running' , boy was I wrong...!!! Great to see the car running. I wish Paddy well in restoring the car and getting it road worthy again. Thank you Jonny and the TLBS team.
Absolutely love the Late Brake Show's barn find series! It's like a treasure hunt for car enthusiasts like me. The excitement of discovering these hidden gems is truly unmatched. Each episode is a captivating journey, and I can't help but be glued to the screen from start to finish. Kudos to the team for creating such engaging and entertaining content. Can't wait for the next barn find adventure. it's the only KZread video that keeps me hooked without a pause! 🙌
Τhe Laimos family has been in the shipping business since 1905. Liberty ships were given to a number of Greek ship owners who lost their ships to Germans confiscating them or torpedoed by subs as compensation after WWII. The owner was probably Captain Nikos Laimos who is still alive today at almost 90 years old. His two sons Anton and Fillip continue the family tradition and now they own the ENESEL group of maritime businesses that is worth several billions...
@TeknoTramp
7 ай бұрын
Many thanks for your constructive comments - I take it that the spelling you use 'Laimos' is simply a Greek variant of 'Lemos', as they are listed as owning ENESEL? On the factory build sheet the original owner of the car was a 'Captain Lemos'. From what I can determine, this was Captain Marcos Lemos - his family seemed to think so too when I contacted them. From what you've said it may well be that he was given the Liberty ship because his family had lost one or more vessels to the war.
What a talented & down to earth bloke Paddy is. And what a great car. I can see that being fully restored over the next 5-10 years.

British barn finds are the absolute best, both in find and the back story to how it became.
Incredible story about this DB4, so interesting.... I appreciate the fact not every car is as rare as this one. But how many cars are still hidden in barns (or any other shelter), waiting to see daylight, and be back on the road to enjoy. Even the most common car had a proud first owner, made journey's, made story's, sometimes followed by other owners with additional story's to tell.... Hope for every make, brand, model a few (or better) more examples will survive. Nice chap too, Paddy... Hope you can sort this A. M. out and bring it back to life, preserving it's character.

OMG! Thr DB4 fired up! Never thought that would happen.. And it has water still in the engine.. Absolutely Astonishing. What a car. .. Paddy is a very interesting man and popular in the comment section too Thanks to the LBS team for having a 2nd attempt /day at trying to get the DB4 fired up. Didn't sound half bad too. Bit concerned the DB may not be here in a few years with all that corrosion. Needs a resto soon as. Needs to be saved for history. Timestamp; 1830 reminds me of being at the dentist. ... Obviously this is one of the top 5, each episode should stand on its own merits. So it could the Audi QR turbo, both Lamborghinis (kendal & & Guy Fawkes), reno 5 turbo, M series bmws. The guy fawkes labmo has to be the best settings /backdrop to a BF. ... Or the kendal lambo with the shady owner... In this episode Paddy is as much a star as the car! .. Keep up the good work...
Can we organise all meeting at the Pub to chat with Paddy ? What a guy !!
What an episode of barn finds! Fabulous. The owner Paddy, would be the ultimate barn find mate to join you. What a guy!
One of your best. I think Paddy and Rufus were the barn find here. What an interesting guy and so good of him to involve us and to put so many hours before the second day. I'm sure there a great many of us watching this thinking of the gold Corgi James Bond DB5 we had as kids. Was Goldfinger the inspiration for the respray? Hope Paddy gets round to restoring the DB4 himself as the outsourcing cost will be substantial. The classic pair also reminded me of the Persuaders with the red Dino and orange DBS also said to have been an inspiration for the DB5 and Ferrari 355 chase in Goldeneye!
I was lucky enough to own a DB4 as a young man in the early seventies, a rare interim model just before the 5 was launched, even then I had to have some body work done, the tubular body frame, which the aluminum is crafted around, has padding between the two, this facilitates damp and aluminum corrosion even after just 7/8 years, Restoring the body work on this old girl will take for ever! Wish you all the luck! Great video thanks a lot.
As a side note, in reference to what Paddy said about the Spy connection and the DB4. Corgi the toy manufacturer back when the film Goldfinget came out in 1964, decided to cash in on the films success, and produced the first Aston Martin toy with full working Gadgets, but used a DB4 mold they already had in stock to make the Diecast car as quickly as possible, but Corgi decided to paint the toy car Gold to tie in with the films Title, and not Silver Birch which was the colour of the DB5 in Goldfinger. The toy sold by the millions, and was voted toy of the year back then. Corgi later on made the correct mold to make the correct DB5 shape and this time paint it silver. So to see this DB4, even if it's not in it's original colour but changed to Gold, just looks to me like a full sized version of the Corgi original toy gadget car. It makes me wonder if the original owner wanted to make his DB4 look like the original Corgi James Bond toy car, just a silly thought by me. 🤔 Its such a crying shame that the DB4 looks beyond restoration in my opinion, I could be wrong, but at least the Engine should live again in another DB4 that can be restored somewhere in the world, lets really hope so. 🤞

It seems I received a reply to my post, but the reply isn't showing now for some reason, strange? So if you replied to my post then please re-enter your reply, I don't mind if it was a criticism or not to what I posted, I could have got my facts wrong, I can always stand to be corrected. My post was just an observation by me from when I was a kid and reading the Corgi book about the history of the Aston Martin DB5 James Bond Gadget toy car, and how it came to be produced. I still have the book and it's a very interesting history of a famous toy car that's still being made by Corgi every now and then.

Everything is restorable if you have deep enough pockets, it would probably outstrip its value when done !
A really epic barn find. And so cool to see you come back the next day and even though you didn’t get it started, it was nice to see you and hear it running.
I just LOVED the fact that someone spent his sons' legacy on fast cars, a yacht, aeroplane, house etc, spent the LOT!! It was like George Best saying "I spent 50% of my money on women, 25% on booze/cars...and the rest I just wasted" !!! A MILLION then, woooooooowww!
"The whole point of it is not that i want a 458-engined Dino, the point is i want to BUILD a 458-engined Dino!" That says alot about Paddy's passion for cars and engineering. And thats some solid motivation!
Utterly brilliant Jonny, you never give up and so so close but the end result was well worth it. Well done, keep making great content like this!
This has to be the best edition yet ! Paddy is a legend , if I had 5% of his talent in d be happy , this is your best work yet Johnny and your knowledge never ceases to amaze me . Bravo.
What a great episode! The original Bond Aston was a DB2/4 but they changed it to the current model when they shot Goldfinger. It could have been a DB4 if it was made a couple of years earlier! My dad restored a DB2/4 when I was a kid, I always remember it. It was finished in an amazing metallic gunmetal grey. Awesome
Roofus must be the best behaved dog in the UK. Another fascinating episode…well done 👍👏

Both Rufus and Mrs Rufus were in the video!
Tremendous! I followed a 1970 DB6 the other day - it sounded and smelt glorious. A 458 powered Dino is interesting.
The Barn Finds just keep getting better. I agree with others that the longer time you allow for these episodes is really working. Paddy is a legend. Thanks so much for creating this amazing content. Always watch start to finish.
At the end the end the basic engine running sounded excellent without any audible bearing knocks, so could be a really good one. Very interesting episode thanks buddy!
my oh my . . . . . .. yes. of course it's a DB so gorgeously aspiring to its next journey. but, oh to my eyes ---- the lathe! @29:00 Paddy makes reference to its necessary partnership. pity, the garage tour didn't gain the priority as i wished. there seems to me -- a very nice bond affixed to Jonny & Paddy in that wonderous space on top of a marvel soon awakened me thinx. many thanx to Paddy for curating a Petrolicious-like audience. the opportunity was mine most assuredly. (a note to Paddy's "GP" life in the pits & elsewhere - super cool life effort!)
