This Can Sink Your Boat | Boat Restoration | How to Replace Boat Thru-hull Fittings (Ep 68)

Thru-hull fittings are the one thing that can sink your sailboat or trawler. In this episode I talk about replacing thru-hull fittings on my Albin 27 pocket trawler.
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs. And when all else fails, I tell stories of boat motivation.

Joe for each thru-hull size it's good to have a cork or wood tapered plug stopper if needed to stop a failure or hose rupture, then a person can jump in the water a bang the cork into the failed thru-hull till the repair can be made........I use old champagne corks. Hey another great Video Joe !

Thanks for the enthusiasm. And I just got myself a Concorde 31. To give you an idea of the state of this boat, the day before yesterday I pumped out the water, there was like 4" of water above the floorboards. Wish me luck!

Hi! Nice channel!) In my opinion, it's better at first- to add some sealant from inside to a nut, and second- to give extra sealant sqeezed around out from the thru-hull some time to get hard and only than cut it delicate, cause acetone is not the best friend of sealant)

A simple hole, a lot of work but... another item out of To do List. Thanks to share. Past Sunday I saw an old Pocket cruise that needs an owner to refurbish... May be me? Lol...😂

Unless you hope to re-use the old thru-hull, it's much more time efficient to grind off the flange from the outside and simply pull the stem out. Those plastic ones can be cut off with a Dremel.

Love the channel! Couple of observations would be to use a 6 sided wrench, not 12. And put a metal or even wood dowel in the thru-hull fitting so you can clamp down on it without the surprise explosion! "Ask me how I know"! LOL!

I would have used a piece of plywood - drill with hole saw - use as a guide for the hole saw over the old thru hull…I hope that makes sense

Just be aware white and semi clear are not uv protected and will fail in sunlight - grey or black prevents light getting into the plastic

I usually take a chisel on the flange on the outside and they will shatter because of being dried out from sunlight

could you use bronze or stainless steel as the backplate. It would cost more but wondering if space is a concern.

Thanks for the comment Mark. 🤔There is no need for the added coast or weight of any metal backing plate for thru hulls. And the metal would not easily conform to the odd shapes of the hull
