Welcome to MotorCity Boat Werks, my boat building and boat restoration studio. I make amateur boat building and boat restoration videos for the DIY boat builder. My how-to videos document my progress on old sailboat restorations, composite and fiberglass boat building, or my pocket trawler restoration. I show the tips and tricks, the ups and downs, the decision-making and design that goes into the passion of amateur boat building. This is the real story of amateur boat building and amateur boat restoration.
Boat restoration like you’ve never seen on KZread before. Don’t take my word for it, watch a few episodes, and see for yourself. Trust me. You’re gonna love it.

My Dad was a Marine. 20 years. Retire as a Lt.. Col. I grew up at Cherry Point. Lejeune,
Good call Joe. We locals are very proud of our magnificent museum in Clayton.
do the pilot house. I want to see the project.
Neat place - the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is very similar and worth a visit if you're ever back around this way.
Thanks Wayne 😁
If you can work a milling machine then a lot of money could be saved in fixing these older engines. I sometimes wonder about engineers. Do they ever take into account the practicalities of maintenance and repair? They shove stuff into the smallest of places and then mechanics have to work out how to fix it.
Thanks for the comments. 🐙Regrettably this engine is no longer made and marinated parts are not available. 🤓For long term cruising a 40y old engine like this is not viable- so time for a new one. 😁
@@motorcityboatwerks I was talking about making ones one parts. A good milling machine, and the ability to use it, can solve a lot of problems. Still it's not something most people can do.
Very interesting post nothing more beautiful than a wooden boat
Thank you Dave 😁
Love those old wood boats-talk about real boat restoration!
Thanks for the comment Joe 👍😁👍
Thanks for a great tour. I think the correct terminology is VINTAGE. ANTIQUE is defined as 100 years old or more.
Maarten 🐙 don’t hurt yourself thinking😂🤣Historic: A boat built up to and including 1918. Antique: A boat built between 1919 and 1942. Classic: A boat built between 1943 and 1975. And Maarten is spelled Martin by the rest of the English speaking world. 😂🤣
@@motorcityboatwerks Spelled Martin to make it easy for the Murrkin dialect speakers. Almost no "Martins" in the Dutch speaking world, not that we we discussing the spelling of anything. You guys call anything older than yourselves "Antique". As for spelling... Howcum you lot can't get your tongues around ALUMINIUM? 😂
😂🤣The designations are established by the Antique Boating Club of America, Maarten, not by the Dutch. And the museum is located in the United States 🇺🇸 . Please move along🐙
Great rules, thankyou.
😁

Great side trip showing Real Boat Restoration. This boat museum is an adrenalin shot for any builder. Beauty and form. Speed frozen in wood.
Thanks Wolfram👍😁Very motivating visit and great to explore
I'm very glad you enjoyed the "real boat restorations" at the Clayton Antique Boat Museum Joe. I'm sometimes hesitant about suggesting some things like that but I knew after we talked you would be one person that could truly appreciate what a "National Treasure" that place truly is. Stay motivated brother. Cheers! Rick
Thanks Rick👍😁 It was a great recommendation and I hope everyone gets a chance to see this great museum. Thanks again 🫡
Real Boat Restoration looks good.

Thank you for the comment 😁 Check out my Coosa Board and Composites Playlist -see if that doesn’t help 😉
Great museum tour. Some Real Boat Restoration has taken place there.

Just found your channel and subscribed!
Welcome Aboard Jeff 👍😁
You can use a small Sheetmetal screw, screwed into the center of the bung, the bung will back out and not damage the edge of the bung hole If you use varnish on the new bung, instead of glue , you can remove the bung later with less effort. Just dip the bung into the varnish
Thanks for the comment Bob 👍😁
Your awesome dude and awesome video be safe out there
Thanks Mathew 😁👍
@@motorcityboatwerks your awesome no problem dude😎👍
😁
Great video Joe. It looks like the screws were countersunk. Did you use 316 or a similar grade?

Welcome Aboard Pieter! Thanks for the comment
Nice Job Joe!
Thanks Deryk!
Thank you for the encouragement! I'll do the headlining as described in these episodes
👍😁
A question, what was the surface prep on the boat itself before bonding the hatch opening?
The previous hatch frame was removed 🐙and the opening cut to size and then surface sanded to accept epoxy 🤓
Love it. Thank you for making this video
👍😁
I just did the same thing on my 1968 Hatteras 34. But I used mahogany since I wanted the frame to match the interior. Man what a royal pita it was to make a piece of furniture lol.
👍😁Thanks for the comment Danny. Keep going !
Great episode! I love Total Fair. It’s a great product.
It’s been working for several projects now 👍😁
Thanks always worth watching great information well played out
Thank you Dave 👍😁

Hatches even used ones have gotten expensive...I plan on removing my Potter 19's forward hatch eventually with something that is securable
😁
Thanks for the construction tips. 😊
👍😁
Lovely no nonsense work with a focus on delivering a professional finish. Always a pleasure. Oh by the way you spoke of a shop in our area that sells used boat parts. If you can, an update on who and where they are is appreciated.
Thanks Timothy👍😁 Google Marine Sales and Repair in Harrison Twp, MI. Check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIKM15OsoMy6Xdo.htmlsi=groQI9_xlwRRtaz9
I so want to own and renovate a sailing cruiser, in the future and obtain my six pack license but for now i plan on customizing a dinghy to row in central Alabama with lights, radios in rivers. For now i been using a inflatable dinghy to row without lights, without music, or have a vhf mobile transceiver.
Good luck Dan! 😁 You can do it
I just bought a 42’ 1969 Chris craft and I gotta do a good amount of updating on it ima try to keep these rules in mind
👍😁
Looks great. What kind of weight can it support? I can just see my grandson climbing up there and jumping up and down.
If you watch my videos you will see me standing on the hard top.😁 thanks for the comment
Wow what a lovely looker in side wow nice love it
👍😁
Keep it as is…
😁👍 A vote for original !
The stairs look beautiful!
Thanks for the comment Jani! 😁👍
A+ for effort!
😁
I feel every minute of this episode. My own boat resto project parallels yours in time, money, effort, ups and downs, joys and frustration. I even work a full time job and have a family on top of it all… What I don’t do though, is manage a KZread channel & all the content creation etc. I don’t know how you do it man. But I’m glad you do! Great episode and congrats on the piece in PassageMaker!
MVPaladin thanks for the support and the comment😁👍 I enjoying hearing that my story resonates with other amateur boat builders and boat restorers. 😁thanks again
Wow, 10 years...but life does get kind of busy at times...surprised during Covid you didn't have any hours in...I worked on building a camper van out of a ford transit connect that summer... but your getting there, and the boat is looking amazing! Got a question for you, at 11minutes 41 seconds that looks like a flip up step? I am trying to come up with an idea for my West Wight Potter 19 that I am working on to get rid of the steps but I need something to get in and out of the cabin(I can step in and down to the floor but I don't think many of my friends would be able to do it)
Thanks for the comment Deryk😁👍 The aft cabin steps are a teak step which is the lid to a storage box part of the aft cabin cowling. See my videos on building the aft cabin cowling. Consider a swing down step commonly found in 1960-1970s classic sailboats. Similar to a RV camper swing out entry step.
@@motorcityboatwerks thanks Joe!
