The Headspace Camper rooftoop conversion is the best one I have seen so far and I'm looking forward to seeing the walk through. The red lights, twin rooftop fans, seamless installation and awning mounts show that Aussie nous can create beautiful things.

Andrew, you don't just help via your overland workshop. You help by presenting informative content with plenty of things to learn from and translate to our own lives. The actual measure of how much "help" your overall body of work truly is can probably far underestimated. Love your work!

Thanks for the informative video

The new pop-up roof looks exceptionally good. I really like the two rear flaps at the rear. I envisage that this design will make shuffling and faffing about 'upstairs' far easier and much less of a pain in the neck. Obviously, as with all motorhomes, campervans, caravans and builds such as this, there will always, always be compromises. The pop-up tents and roofs like this are already compromised by the lack of space and height. This is where good small design decisions can make all the difference in their enjoyment and that potentially equates to a couple of more nights touring. I really am very impressed.

Hey ASPW! Loving the new build mate! I have the bush company 270 Mac on my FJ and it is absolutely amazing! The best awning I have ever used and highly recommended. One thing I would like to add is it is important to not tighten the awning straight away. It can cause the canvas on the wall runner to move out of position which with cause incorrect tension and also water to poll. This is what I have discovered using mine for the last 3years. Love the channel and hopefully we can catch up on a trip one day.

The space inside that rooftop conversion is huge ! Can't wait to start on fitting the electricals in this beauty !!

I can’t wait to see the build complete, but most of all the whole journey and experience is definitely worth it. I have the same bug in building 4x4s and bikes for many years. The whole process is what makes it unexplainable.

I have the same awning, and man, it's a decent one. Had it on the Fortuner and made a plan to fit on the double cab. It was one of the better gadgets I bought. Plus it handles wind like a boss.

Why do you obsess about the FTE when it isn't made any more?? FTE is a great engine, I agree!. But it hasn't been available in any country since about 2008. And saying the 2.8 and V8 are 'useless' renders your argument useless. I've used the V8 on several very successful, tough trips. How is that in any sense, 'useless'?

Heads pace make a very nice conversation, I'm fitting a troopy out for a mate with one and I'm super impressed with the quality, only issue I have found solar is a lack of a handle on the rear exterior as opening when wet can be interesting as you have to use your palm to try lift the corner and when wet it's slippery, also closing the roof when hot , not so fun either apart from that it's the best on the market by far. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I like a 4xOverland video before I even watch it. Great video Andrew as always. Never stop learning from you.

Lovely video and sensational roof conversion. The Bush Co awning is fantastic HOWEVER make sure you get a new vinyl cover as the original canvas cover leeches wax onto the car when it rains and is a bitch to clean and remove … that is my only negative about this fantastic product! Your smile says it all ! 10/10

The split end panels at the foot of the bed are a great idea. We had an AluCab Hercules on our Troopy, and I always wanted to cut the single flap in half but I never got around to it. Looks like the bed in this is a bit wider than the AluCab too - or am I imagining that? Hope they do well & get a good share of the market. Seem like nice blokes with a quality product.

Will you look at that, I actually guessed it correctly that you'll go with Headspace Campers. They're the only Australian made roof top conversion of this type that I know. Though a little surprised you didn't go with an Aussie made awning? Didn't any of them wanted to be part of your build?

Andrew, love your videos and followed them for a long time. Next month I'm heading to Kenya to work with kids at a church there and the missionary I'm working with is having problems getting her Prado repaired properly. Looks like it might be an ECU. Question for you: do you know about parts compatibility worldwide for the Prado and reputable dealers in Kenya or Africa in general? Thanks my friend!

I'm impressed with this project and Toyota have so many components to take from one vehicle to build a virtually new one. However I wonder whether one might feel that the Iveco or Mercedes Unimog could also have been within a similar ethos and they are already being produced aren't they? They admittedly are more truck like and probably out of range in terms of cost to purchase.

Going to keep the troopy white? Hopefully there will be a change in colour... always interesting!

Try to watch all your videos but seem to have missed the one where you discuss red light as anti bug. Note that Head space have built these into the new unit. As I get chewed by the wee beasties can you advise which episode I need to find to listen all about the use red lights. Cheers

I wish we had this as an option in the states…

Red lights also don't blow out your night vision as badly. Nothing worse than your eyes getting used to the dark, only to have a light blind you for the next 45 minutes.

Hi Andrew, are you doing the 79 side step mod ? Ive got a 2.8 troopy and im doing that mod from your blue troopy build, on the 2024 there's no rear mounting bolt holes in the body, did you make a bespoke rear L mount yourself last time ? thanks

without actually camping with it, that is impossible to tell. So no reviews or comparisons from me until I have.

Andrew you certainly inspire. You opened to me the doors of overlanding. But I would like you to be more helpful. I mean: your buildings are amazing, stunning, a dream! But for people, like me, living in Europe, overlanding often means going to Spain desertic areas, italian mountains, mediterranean islands and so on. Rarely to Morocco or Tunisia. What I mean is that there's a part (I guess not a little part) of your audience (at least the European part of it) that simply cannot use those kind of overland vehicles you build. Because in Europe we have a lot of beautiful places to travel through, but in most of them (even in rural, remote and natural areas) you can't do free camping, because it's frobidden by the law. You can stay with a vehicle and sleep IN the vehicle, but you can't use awnings, chairs, tables or rooftop tents, unless you decide to stay in a "proper" camping site with all the facilities (but this does mean you'r not overlanding anymore). So if you want overland here in EU (without moving to middle-east or north Africa) you have to set up a car with a very small awnings you'll mostly never use and a sleeping platform inside the car (no conversion of the roof, because you'will be immediately branded as an "abusive camper" ). For my Prado 120 I built a wooden sleeping platform and put a small fridge and other stuff inside. Fine, great, love It! I would never done it without you videos and books as an inspiration! But It'll be interesting if one of your next projects would be a much simple overland vehicle (not necessarily cheap like the one you made for your daughter) for shorter distances and offroad tracks but not very far from water and gas stations, a car with a sleepling plaform, small fridge and kitchen, all IN the veichle without rooftop tents, roof modifications, big awnings and all those nice gadgets you can freely use in Australia. I know you mainly talk to people that can do what you do. I know that overlanding is what you do, and not what we can try to do in Europe, but we, european with overlander soul, are not luky enough like our aussie or southafrican counterparts :) !! Thank you !!

There are many other ladder on frame vehicles, apart from “utes”, their derivatives like Everest and Fortuner, nor to mention mention the numerous Toyota SUV Land Cruisers etc etc

I've often wondered if these conversions affect the vehicles roll over safety. Pretty swish looking kit though.

2 things... 1. The roof conversion should have the hability to.open diagonally and parallel.... 2. The awning should come out.of the roof convesion directly not a separate thing..

Andrew what do you think of Sprinter vans or E series vans? Are they available in Autralia? Do you ever see building 1 in the future? Good luck on your new build. Been following you since the first Troopy love your channel

Andrew, do you think I could install one of these camper tops on a 2012 LR4/ Discovery 4 since as you know the LR4 has two roof sections of glass ( skylight) over the rear passenger/cargo area that should be okay to removed? -

No. It is unibody construction. There is framing that connects either side (and front and back) of the Disco. If you were to cut the top off similar to what was done here, the integrity of the vehicle would be voided. Those large panoramic windows in modern vehicles are heavily restructured around the glass, where you can’t see it. I hope this helps.

Thanks Justin, interesting that the KR4 is both unibody and on ladder frame-maybe I wasn’t clear, but no cutting is intended, just use the holes already designed (where the glass is mounted) to access the bed above, no structural alteration necessary. I know the glass is not a stressed member and therefore it’s removal would not affect the integrity of the body

@@frankjacoby9460 That's an option. However, the engineering involved to create something that would work the way you mentioned would cost a small fortune. There would have to be at least 30-50 buyers to regain the costs of designing and engineering something like that. Considering that 99% of most LR4s never see anything more than the dirt from construction on a road, I dont see any point in trying to build something like that.

I think that since I’m pretty savvy about fiberglass molding techniques I’ll design something that is removable on a modified roof rack already on the market also using an available roof top tent ; got the picture? I want a troopy ..... but we cant have them in the U.S. , even had a basic base model LC 300gx no ..... all our wagons in the U.S are 3 row luxury family school buses , most have independent rear axle yuck ... for a smooth ride and leg room for the 3rd row please Toyota give us a good utilitarian wagon for u.s.

Certainly looks like a quality product with good design, but also looks heavy?

You do not know my story so please stop lecturing me. I know far more that you give me credit for. The FTE Land Cruiser were not available in South Africa when I was there but for grey imports at astronomical prices. I agree its a fantastic engine. I'm on my 10th Land Cruiser. I have my preferences based on experience. Not on people telling me what's good and what's not. Like you are doing. Saying the V8 is 'useless' is plainly ridiculous. I did several brilliant and highly successful trips with them. Hardly useless!

So why the new brand of rooftop conversion instead of the usual alucab conversion products previously used?

not being a hater. I love your videos. But the fact that you did not mention any competitor products to the conversion and the awning in this video (not even the ones you previously used in your builds and made videos about) gives this whole video an "advertising kind of feel". I really hope you will properly compare the headspace conversions to other conversions on the market (Mulgo, Bonetti, Alucab, Alu Innovations) in your upcoming video. Same goes for the awning.

@@4xoverland I am not expecting anything. But those conversions (and to a lesser extents the awnings) are a very hefty investment, which makes people do lots more research before a buying decision. I don’t think they can be compared to e.g. recovery gear. You have significant experience in using the conversions (I remember you used Alucab and Alu Innovations in previous builds). It feels like a massive opportunity for you to provide value to your viewers by using your knowledge and experience and comparing those brands (and as I said in a best case other brands that you have not yet used like mulgo and Bonetti) with each other. And I personally would love to see that.

Think a bit harder about what you are asking of me. Yes, they are expensive. All the more reason it is impossible to do fair comparisons. Do you expect me to buy another Landcruiser and fit a Mulgo do some trips, then another and fit a Bonetti, do some trips, just so I can do a fair comparison of a single element in their builds. I have never won a single disagreement on KZread, and I doubt if you will concede that your expectations are not just ridiculous but comical. (think more before you reply)
