I do not know why build ND is such a big deal. I have 5-6 variable NDs. I mount one on each lens. So when I switch lens, it is already on the lens. I never feel the need of internal ND.

Sold the FX3 got two FX30. The best camera is the FX30. Using super fast cine glass even at night there's no problem.

I bought the first a7S3 in 2020. I was so impressed, I Bought a second one in 2021. With these two a7S3 I was recording 4k60 10 bit for 8 hours straight and was so impressed I bought a 3rd a7S3 in 2022.

I only wish Sony gave us open gate on the FX3 and 6 tbh. Also, on another note, when you get the Laowa Ranger lenses, could you compare them to the DZO Catta and the fuji mk (on an equivalent configuration, for example the Laowa and catta at 28/4 and the MK at 18/2.9). They really are the main zoom options at this price point CVP is basically the only channel that does serious testing between products Cheers from the other side of the Atlantic

I've just bought one and I must admit I am blown away with the quality. The sound quality with the top handle is outstanding even using a cheap XLR mic. My only real problem coming from using the GH5 is the lack of an EVF, the Sony screen can be very difficult to see in bright sunlight and judging focus & exposure is therefore guesswork. I do have a separate monitor which helps if I have remembered to pack it!

you need to understand that FX3 it's intended to be used with an external monitor mate. Optionally you can build a 3D printed hood eye piece for the screen but that will defeat the purpose of "compactness"

Its a budget cinema camera, meaning its supposed to be rigged while maintaining a small body to reduce weight.

Fantastic video, I love the color. What LUT do you usually use?

I own and work with FX 3, A7S III, A7 IV. I'm doing a lot of work actually with the A7 IV, due to the oversampling and astonishing crop in possibilities. But the internal fan and XLR audio makes the FX 3 indispensable. - I just recorded a concert with all three. The A7 IV overheated. The other ones were fine.

Always dig your videos. But this appraisal of the Fx3 is a bit odd. 1. updates: it took Sony ages to provide updates for the FX3, e.g. focus breathing compensation only came a few weeks ago. And we are still missing video fundamentals like waveform, shutter angle etc. Plus, the anamorphuc support is very basic 2. The IBIS is disappointing, when e.g comparing it to Panasonic. 3. the screen quality is poor, especially since you have to rely on it due to lack of EVF. Pair this with the lack of exposure tool and you have a hard time exposing when the camera is not rigged up. 4. no support for USB recording. And the list goes on. Net net: I would not buy it again.

I believe the reason internal ND's were not possible for these cameras was because of the stabilisation! Apparently due to the movement of the sensor, the mounting of an internal ND would need to have so much more room than the FX3 body allows! Having used an FX6, the internal ND is amazing, but I love my FX3 and using a VND hasn't ever really bothered me haha

The FX3 is amazing. I am very satisfied with mine. Dare I say the build quality is far nicer than the alpha bodies. So nice to work with and the XLR-handle is great. The FX30 is also a great -- a true workhorse robust video camera for an affordable price.

Its been confirmed that the fx3 was the main camera for the movie The Creator. Arri has mentioned no involvement with the movie, the fx3 is what was used.

Sony needs to add Extended clear scan to the FX3

Hey CVP, I am from India. I really enjoy watching your gear reviews. I am a beginner filmmaker. Which should I consider buying out of these four: Sony A7IV, Panasonic Lumix Mark IIX, Sony FX3 and Fujifilm XH2S

It's been a hell of a journey as someone who bought this camera on its release date. The mania over the 'A7s3 in an expensive body' debate, seeing people judge our purchasing decision to then silently buying an FX3 of their own, now a feature length film shot on an FX3 and reneissance period... All the while just quietly enjoying, learning and having fun with this little powerhouse 🫠

@@citizengen not to be rude, but looking at modern filmmaking, how many shots nowadays rely on the classic eye level/shoulder rig style anymore? An extremely important angle nonetheless, but not enough to dedicate resources to an EVF for most filmmakers.

@@citizengen maybe I'm wrong but I think that's meant to be taken way less literally. Hands on/tactile shots are great but huge portions of modern and even somewhat classic films are shot with cranes/jibs/rigs/steadicams, what's the use in those scenarios? If somebody really likes the FX3 and wants an EVF they could just buy a third-party one. Additionally, the role of an EVF traditionally was framing/finding focus well before modern inventions like wireless monitoring, focus peaking or various autofocus systems existed. I'm an advocate for using what it takes to get the job done, and in my opinion the FX3 is a perfect prosumer take on a compact, modular cinema camera. No EVF required.

Its the same with Panasonic. Plenty of folks not knowing how to use panasonic vlog complain about it because they don't know how to develop it into proper rec709. Regardless of camera, if you don't know what you're doing, the results will likely be all over the place.

While the fx3 is amazing it seems like the fx30 is being slept on. I use it along with an fx6 and solo when traveling. It is unbelievable how good it is for the price! I just think the fact that it is seen as “apsc” instead of super 35 was criminal marketing by Sony.

Filmed my first feature on it and love the versatility and quality of the camera. The dual base ISO is massive and really helps with spectacular night shots and opening up creative liberties. But I share your gripe over the missing record button on the top handle. It can handle 24 bit audio, it surely has the bandwidth for a programmable button

Truly brilliant camera. Cine EI, DCI 4K, true 24FPS, lens breathing compensation, user LUTs, XLR inputs, active cooling system, great rolling shutter performance, outstanding low light, RAW output, the list goes on. Incredible compact cine camera for any professional work.

I wouldn't say that FX3 has XLR-inputs, they are still provided only by an attachment. And many cameras have attachment that we wouldn't consider a feature of the camera.

I've been holding back my purchase on the FX3 because I was waiting for a newer version. And then the ZV-E1 came out with all the specs I wanted, but then it overheats especially at a tropical country where I'm based. Looking forward what Sony's has in store for us in the future.

@@Slipsch way too many rigging options available for this to be an issue. Also doesn't make sense from the standpoint of product roll outs from Sony. I live in Singapore and FX3 is Godsend. Do it. Buy the FX3.

It's no surprise. The Sony FS7 was absolutely dominant for years and years. And the FX9/FX6 were the natural successors to it. Thus anybody who wants a B/C camera, or is an aspiring pro who wishes to step it up a level and get into more pro work, will naturally go for the FX3 (or FX30).

Internal ND wish list

Magnetic NDs will change your life. I like the Kase Wolverine set.

Kase Skyeye set is even better because of the threaded front.

IMO, the FX-30 has taken a huge bite out of the FX3's value:features ratio. The only real things you're sacrificing is the stellar low light performance, sensor size and mechanical shutter if you're shooting high speed stills. But you gain a better AF System, a higher res sensor (6k downsample, the difference is noticable), and access to good cheap super-35 glass without sensor cropping. FOR HALF THE PRICE. I think the most cost effective A+B pairing is currently an FX30+FX6.

FX3 has not taken that huge bite. I still prefer full-frame sensor because of the convenience. If you're only making short films or in control recording environment, FX30 will do the trick. But when it comes to run-n-gun for wedding events or events in general, having a full-frame sensor is far more superior.

@@harryvuemedia5106 S35 is superior for run-n-go / docos / etc, because your lens options are better and you don't have to stop as far down to maintain usable DoF as you have to do with so called "Full Frame"

I think the reason the a7sIII hasn’t received any updates is because Sony is saving them for the a7sIV release.

that's great camera but should be less expensive even now after few year after release . And who knows when fx4 will be presented ?

Biggest issues with the fx3 for me have been 1. Price, at 5k in my country you can get a Nikon z8 which has a stacked 8k sensor with the same dynamic range and has internal raw and more video features than the fx3. 2. Lack of video features, the fx3 is a "cinema camera" yet lacks shutter angle and waveform which I use all the time and prevents me from ever recording in the wrong shutter speed. Sony needs to fix this, there is no excuse. 3. Degraded all-I, the bitrate of all-I codecs on all Sony cameras is a lower bitrate than on other camera brands which causes serious blocking and artifacts resulting in a worse image than using the long gop codecs, Sony needs to fix this. 4. The menu system, you still can't really change or add items to the quick menu which sucks, also log is separated from the other shooting modes so it's annoying trying to switch between them.5 there is no option to change the focus throw on lenses or switch them to linear focus like you can on Panasonic or Nikon so you can't adapt photo lenses for manual focus. 6. the colors have improved but skin tones still don't look as great right out of camera compared to canon and Panasonic. 7. You can't remove in camera noise reduction and 12800 second base iso is too high as the image is very mushy compared to a lower second base iso.

I regret selling my FX3 more than selling my FX6. The FX3 is their premiere camera below $10K, IMO.

With the Mercury Ana's how much did you have to crop in? Or were you shooting RAW to get more of the image? Thanks.

It can't shoot open gate ("raw"), you're stuck on a 16:9 (or 17:9?) aspect ratio (multiplied by whatever squeeze factor of the lens)

More toys for the boys.

It's a really powerful and fantastic camera. It would be amazing if Sony came up with an external tilting EVF that works with this. That might actually be more friendly for video folks than the traditional fixed EVF of the Sony Alpha series. Waiting to see what Sony comes up with when they release the Mark 2 versions of the FX3 and FX6.

I cannot figure without EVF, personally.

Has anyone heard about an FX3 II or FX4?

You mention other cameras on The Creator? IMDB only mention FX3, can you confirm that? That is a huge deal if it’s a fact.

The limitation that I still don't understand with the FX3 (and the A7S3) is why can't you shoot in XAVC-HS in 25p and 30p. A mystery that only Sony knows the answers too...

No ooen gate in the reel age means no buy for me. No 6k means not future Proof also. Panasonic or fuji is what i am looking for.

The one single thing that kills the FX3 and FX30 for me is the lack of internal NDs. That's a must-have for me in a cinema camera

I believe they are simply too small. Plus having IBIS as of right now seems to be a direct conflict with internal ND compatibility.

It really blows my mind that a "cine" camera doesn't have shutter angle and can't shoot open gate...

Fx3 is the new 5D markII. In your face Canon.

This camera, with NDs, an EVF, the AI chip, 1.5 and 1.8 desqueeze would be perfect imo

RIP A7SIII and its firmware updates. I wish Sony followed Fujifilm on their way to update all their camera lines.

Raw output is 16 bits but Atomos only admits 12 bits. You said “continuous” updates …. 😂 Shame for Sony on that… poor update policy for this “cinema” camera with no shutter angle, curves, false color…. I have one and that annoys me ….

a quick fix though, prores raw on fx3 is 12bit instead of 16bit

It’s 16 bit converted into 12 bit. Similar to Arri Raw

No denying that Sony is a monster player but I just can't get past it's specific look. If it's the look you're going after, then it's a no brainer and a great value. If you're going after an organic look, Sony isn't it. AF and low light on Sony are great.

I prefer my C70. The RAW is just so much better than XAVC.

Unfortunately, as the owner of a Sony a7siii , I felt cheated and left behind. This camera has been completely neglected after the release of a cinematic version ( fx3 ) that is periodically updated to match cinematic requirements.

Quite a difference in price there. Wait for about 12 years for one cheap when someone sells it to get their FX 32k beastie. You will be on the poor old 4k FX3. 😔

except for the size and the autofocus, I don't see how it's better than BMPCC 6K. BMPCC6K is still the king of the more-bang-for-your-buck cameras.

this cam is obvious unnecessary cause of the fx6. No Nd's, digital oversharped imagery and poor audio capabilities. I would say it is a good entry in the world of videomaking. But on production side it's not that good. I worked with both. Just pay little bit more and go get the fx6. I think in terms of this marketing campaign with "the creator", sony who is making this film wants to put this cam in spotlight. But take this with a grain of salt. Most footage was shot on Alexa 65 and even if they say they shot a lot on FX3. Do you really believe that a high budget hollywood movie isn't shot with best technique in case of DR and Color Bit-Depth/Codec for post?....Think about it. They used it as a crash cam for 100%
