This and That: MyKayla Skinner, Alexandra Trusova's Comeback and Chinese Swimming Scandal

Спорт

MyKayla Skinner had some thoughts about the 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials. Simone Biles and her teammates had some thoughts about MyKayla. Meanwhile, Alexandra Trusova intends to return to competition. We also have seen glimpses at new programs from Alena Kostornaia and Georgy Kunitsa, Ilia Malinin, Yuma Kagiyama, Mai Mihara and Kaori Sakamoto. The FBI is now investigating that 23 Chinese swimmers took trimitazedine prior to the Tokyo Olympics - and WADA bought the excuse that their hotel kitchen was somehow contaminated. Eleven of these swimmers are scheduled to compete in Paris. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

    I'm not sure Mykayla has ever understood the concept of "cause and effect". She's been treated like a Mormon Princess who could do no wrong her entire life and wasn't told no. She's used to being able to speak her mind and, much like a cockroach, managing to survive. She may have bit off more than she could chew this time. And part of me feels sad for her because so much of what she says comes from a gnawing insecurity regarding her career that I doubt will ever go away. I also worry about what she saw as a child and how her parents likely completely fucked her up. Jonas scares me too.

    Not sure what you mean by Jonas being scary but from what I’ve seen Mykayla definitely wears the pants in that relationship, lol. I watched her watch party and she was bossing him around the entire time. He cooked for her, and she’d be like hand me my food, put this in the kitchen for me, get the baby etc lol. Totally agree though about her not understanding cause and effect. She just really lacks self awareness and like a general understanding of what’s socially appropriate. I watched the infamous videos and I really don’t think she had any clue her comments would be so controversial.

    The one thing Mykayla did that was good was she brought the gymternet together. For YEARS it was always all about Simone and how she’s the GOAT and no one else really mattered no matter what they did. Now, the athletes alongside Simone are getting the respect they deserve. THIS ISNT SIMONES FAULT…it is media and audience fault. Putting so much notoriety and attention on one person and making only what they do matters is a problem. I think Mykayla made the gymternet realize the disrespect the other girls were getting.

    Ilia has got to get a real choreographer who'll stand up to his team AND actually give him programs to make him grow artistically. This is the same as the past 2 years! Shae Lynn is great for skaters who already have an established style, not for transitioning someone to artistry. She never emphasizes the nice positions that Ilia can actually hit, she just throws them away and gives him the same choreo that she gives everyone! That's not what he needs. I can't believe I'm saying this, but if they don't want Sandra or Lori (which is crazy, as they make skaters look their best), Benoit would be better! 🤷‍♀️

    Kazuki remains my favorite Japanese skater, but Shun Sato's artistic growth has been really impressive. If he can just improve those spins further, I think that by the Olympic season he could rival other skaters who are the full package like Yuma and Adam. The material Guillaume is giving him is really refreshing and a nice change from Lori, Shae-Lynn, Benoit, David, and Misha.

    If anyone can make that comeback, it would be Sasha. She's been out of competition for a while and she has an overrotated triple lutz, I'm sure getting at least her quad salchow back won't be a problem, and hoping her quad lutz as well. As for her moving back to Eteri, I think she probably recognizes that it's probably not the best move longevity wise, but if the Eteri bonus still exists, she might move back during the Olympic season

    Re: doping and track and field - I am in the track and field world and I can attest that there have been doping scandals (proven) from the high school level, to the masters (40+) level. The 70-74 male record holder for some track distances in the US was just busted for doping with SEVERAL performance enhancing drugs, and just accepted a ban...It's definitely a problem that is pervasive, and not one that is exclusive to russia. The difference is the state sponsored doping system in russia, vs individual motives in the U.S. and other countries... Thanks again for the great insights Dave and Nolan! The whole Corey Circelli thing just seemed not well thought out. On one hand, Canada just doesn’t do enough to get their skaters international competition opportunities, so it’s understandable that one would consider switching if they could. However, when you’re not even winning in Canada & move to a country with a more talented & deeper field, you’re not getting out of Italy either. He would have better off trying the UK if it is an option for his passport or putting on the effort to win in Canada & becoming the one skater they send anywhere in each discipline.

    So Simone's floor music starts with Taylor Swift's "... Are you ready for it?" Which is perfect on many levels. First, she ends that portion with the tumbling pass everyone is waiting to see. Second, it's the opening song of the reputation album. That particular album has that snake theme because it was a response to the whole Kim releasing the little bit of the phone call after Taylor took issues with being called b and Kanye taking credit for her fame in that song. Simone is now coming back after being called a quitter and such after the last Olympics. I love watching Simone!!! This past week Theo Hernandez called Cristiano Ronaldo not just an example but a refernce point for all of football. Simone Biles is the reference point for what great gymnastics is and what will have to be surpassed. Anytime she does a tumbling pass or a vault, I still scream in amazement and she is great on beam and has improved on bars. Knowing that she's always going to win is something that I think everybody in this era of gymnastics has accepted and so we kind of just look forward to seeing how well she does and it's always a surprise when someone does beat her. On individual apparatus we can see some of the other girls really stepping up their difficulty and that is because of Simone...so then we wait to see who will finish second or third. She has supported so many other girls in their pursuits and totally elevated the sport to new heights. She still excites me with her longevity and continued desire ro improve. Tiana had the best music hands down.

    Well she posted a watch party on her you tube channel during Olympic trials where she sort of live commentated/reacted to the event. Then a couple days later she posted another video on her you tube channel which was her summary/ overall thoughts, and that’s where she really stuck her foot in her mouth. She later had to delete that video. I will say I watched them both before they went viral and there was definitely some things taken out of context but she definitely showed a real lack of awareness and said offensive things. Like the biggest offending comments were basically that “aside from Simone there’s not much depth and talent in USAG anymore” and that she couldn’t believe someone could fall twice and still come in second (Suni). Also that since the regime change and since Marta left there is a lack of work ethic, and that girls are lazy and stand around and smart off to their coaches and “because of safe sport” coaches are “afraid to say anything anymore.” Commented that she could have made the Olympic team. It kind of went on and on, Lol. Then it absolutely blew up and all the girls started unfollowing her and she posted a weak apology saying “seems like you all misinterpreted me.” Then after it kept getting worse with big names weighing in, she finally released a more PR formal apology. Edit: guessing videos were taken down from you tube but clips still circulating on twitter for sure.

Swimming is always a fun watch. There is a lot to look forward to but there are just so many other athletic events going on and frankly people don't sit around their TVs anymore to watch big sporting events like the Olympics. Even I have been frustrated with the Olympics due to the poor judging and things like figure skating and the fact that there was no real repercussions for a nation that set up their own drug lab to circumvent a national doping program but clearly it's not just the Olympics that seem not to care about this issue because of what happened in Japan with the Chinese swimmers like wow WADA needs to be dismantled and rebuilt with more safeguards.

    A few things: I am so grateful for TSL and Dave’s insights into the history and relationship between figure skating and gymnastics. In regards to Simone’s FX - I wish I could find the video of this male dancer performing Simone’s 2021 FX in a dance studio, because seeing it on longer limbs shows that her choreography is much more elegant than people think because they are seeing it on a shorter person. I think Milan’s choreo for this routine is exquisite. It has an enormous range of variety and style. In regards to Myk - I find fighting fire with fire to actually feed a hidden dragon in the gymnastics world, which is the demonization of people for not having XYZ physical qualities. (ie - not having 180° splits, not having cashew foot point, bad back flexibility, etc.) Those technical qualities, while lovely and goals to strive for, do not make up the whole of a gymnast. Do I condone what Myk said? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Pelting her back with non-stop shredding of her technique makes people who might struggle with similar things feel quite horrible about themselves, their gymnastics and their joy. It’s empty and beneath the conversation. 🫶

  • @TheSkatingLesson

    @TheSkatingLesson

    24 күн бұрын

    With regards to choreography, I think someone needs to choreograph to the person. While it is interesting to see choreography on a taller person, it is the job of the choreographer to make the person in front of them look good. As for Skinner, I do think the sport took a turn in a specific direction that I don’t personally agree (yet understand) with skills over technique, artistry, etc. Skinner chose difficulty over execution at every turn, which was fine as an elite - one could debate whether or not the judges should have been more critical or less critical. I was referencing how she would tweet rather aggressively about her own scoring. On one occasion, she said she had stuck X number of vaults only to not get a 10. She opened the door to that conversation and one could argue she was ignorant of her own faults or somewhat delusional. At one meet, she walked off the floor after not receiving a 10.

Taking the gymnasts out of the equation completely, I think there is more choreography and detail in Simone's routine versus Suni's, but the untrained eye might think Suni's choreo is superior because her lines, leaps and technique do all the work. (I think her 2022 Auburn FX was the best choreo for her). Regarding Myk - I'm not necessarily speaking to your comments, but more so the comments of the internet at large which I find problematic.
