    The school I work at just replaced all their computers. I showed up today barely minutes before the crew they'd hired to haul everything away. It turned out they were dumping all the tech they'd had in storage as well. I frantically clawed through it as they were carrying everything out the door and managed to score a working X60s, among a pile of other things.

    A thinkpad T60 or X60 can handle 64 bit OS too. Just install a 5 dollar C2D T7200. Keep in mind the chipset on the X60 mobo cannot remap memory, so you still have 32 bit memory limitation which means 3.0-3.2ish ram maximum usable RAM even if you install 4GB or more and have a 64 bit os and cpu.

    I think as a road companion, it is perfectly useable, i mean, i have a big laptop just for in the home, sitting on the couch of in bed with a big laptop is nice, but bringing it along is a no go for me. I rather have a very small laptop to take along, just to type some text or keep me entertained while i am travelling or visiting friends, most of my friends know i am into tech, and tech will be on the table when i am with them. So if they ask me a question like "can you show me this or that", it's nice to be able to wip out an x series thinkpad and show them how it is done. A x series thinkpad is a nice device like this. The X60 would be perfect for that.

    These are unbeatable for distraction-free writing and productivity. The comfortable keyboard and 4:3 aspect ratio are so easy to work on, and they are so horrible at going online, that you can achieve a lot with a 15 year old IBM. Mine's got a new battery that lasts for a few hours and an old SSD that honestly doesn't make any difference to performance (other bottlenecks keeping it slow) but stops it getting hot. Now running LMDE 32 bit linux.

    @charleswhitney3235

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ContraIsBased It's a lightweight version of Linux. You can try running Linux Mint LMDE 32 bit edition and see how you get on. I don't think it's great at watching videos at 720, the laptop is just too old, but it's great for specific tasks like data entry because the keyboard is one of the best ever made, and the 4:3 aspect ratio makes it feel like a big screen compared to modern widescreen laptops. It's not an all-rounder though and you'll need something more up to date for day to day tasks.

  • @NiGhtPiSH
    @NiGhtPiSH4 жыл бұрын

    It's a testament to the great design and construction that it is still barely usable for modern tasks 14 years later. If you love the 4:3 form factor I'd pick the X61 or X61S, but the platform is limited to 4GB of RAM and that's the main thing holding them back these days. If you want an X series for a daily driver at least a X200 is needed with 8 GB of RAM and a SSD. And once you get used to the TrackPoint, man it's efficient.

    The X61 supports 8GB RAM (2x 4GB), but 4GB DDR2 SODIMMs are rather expensive so not many owners undertake that upgrade. IMO the X61 platform's biggest limitation is the absence of the Expresscard slot, which makes certain upgrades like USB 3.0 ports difficult if not impractical.

  • @NiGhtPiSH

    @NiGhtPiSH

    I know that these SODIMMs exist, but I've never seen one in person. For me the main gripe with the X60/X61 is the rather cramped keyboard compared to the X200, which may sound like heresy, but that's how I feel.

    Recently I refurbished an X60 Tablet in various stages over a long stretch. Windows 7 and Zorin works fine for pen drawing/non-touch tasks and I have a pocket computer emulator + QB64 coding as "the use" of it. The pen functionality is important in all of that and why I got it. What doesn't come across in videos is the cute size of those. I plan to get an X61 over time as I bought the wrong battery for the one above. The T60 models are also dear to me (for refurb projects and experiments). Up-to-date computing is something else and maybe not a part of the retro enthusiasm which some of us have. A likely scenario of watching videos is basically by using another computer eventually and you reveal that in the last part. There is no way that you recorded it with the X60 as well. :)

    Nice video, one correction - X60 is product of Lenovo (despite bearing IBM logo). IBM sold thinkpad to Lenovo in May 2005. Thinkpad T43p was the last genuine thinkpad sold that was manufactured by IBM. If you are forced to run on 32 bit anyway, might as well get T43/T43p, the last of the IBM thinkpads.

    The Thinkpad X6- form factor.chassis is still great. A wonderful compact travel laptop (although you need to get a good replacement battery - preferably the extended battery). The x61 is more than capable at running youtube, netflix and other video services - and can even manage 1080p on an external display without discernable lagging - although it does get quite warm when doing so :) The only downside is the less than amazing display - supposedly this can be upgraded if you can find the right IPS unit - but these seem very hard to get a hold off.

    you can actually play 1080p video relatively well, and 720p video without drops if you use youtube-dl to feed youtube's raw media URLs into a media player like VLC. browsers are not the best when it comes to media playback. check out a basic script i wrote to achieve this: fier.me/publicShare/ytc -- it requires python 3 (likely pre-installed) and youtube-dl, and works both in linux and windows with the correct adjustments (on windows, specify the full path to the vlc.exe). this one is especially written to work with VLC. syntax: ytc hit in ytc v kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYSbmLGanaTHlqw.html to play back this video, for example. i've configured it on default to cap out at 1080p 30 fps + best audio, especially for my T60, specced similar to your X60. if you edit the script-file, you can add your own formats. i've also supplied the "a" format, which is just the best audio, if you just want to play music. it's likely not the best solution, roll your own if you'd like. furthermore i would recommend using a more lightweight DE and turning off composition, to ease the load on the GPU (especially if your laptop uses the GMA graphics). for a linux beginner, i can recommend xubuntu, which is ubuntu, but just pre-bundled with the xfce desktop environment instead of gnome. it can be made to look and handle quite similar to windows, if this is what you enjoy, and the window manager (xfwm) is quite solid, too. if you want an distro that still supports 32bit, and is still relatively easy to use, have a look at debian. it should work relatively well out of the box, but you will likely have to wrestle with the wifi driver (lest you remove the wifi-card blacklist from your bios and switch the card), as it's proprietary, and as such doesn't come with debian, which can be a bit annoying to a beginner. but getting proprietary wifi firmware is relatively well documented. if you are willing to master this, this option will likely be better for the long-run than ubuntu, as abandoning 32bit does not seem to be planned; the last testing image was uploaded 2020-04-27, in line with other releases. just install via LAN or an android device with USB tethering enabled to make things easier on yourself. again, i recommend using the xfce desktop environment, which you can select within the install process. do mind xfce does have its issues, i'm not the biggest fan of thunar for example, make sure you try different DEs, see which you like the most. KDE is also something worth checking out from what i saw. i personally just do not recommend gnome, because it just isn't very optimized. there's also other options, and you can also upgrade to a 64bit CPU like mentioned by someone else, i'm just giving some pointers.

    This machine is a statement from a time when Computers were still cool and you could actually DO stuff with them, except just browsing the web. Because let's face it... the things they sell as modern day Laptops are just glorified tablets with a keyboard and that's it. No extra drives anymore, no Input Output ports except USB... no easily swapable & replaceable Batteries... no more socketed CPUs.... even the RAM is often soldered on... no dedicated hotkeys... no indicator LEDs... no switches to enable or disable certain parts of the hardware... no Video outputs.. no fullsize LAN port... What the heck are you even supposed to DO with a modern laptop when it lacks about anything that made older Laptops the amazing machines we love so much? Laptops today have become pure "Shut up and passively consume" devices. When i take a look at a laptop from the late 90s and mid 2000s i see a machine where i could write on, code, play games, make music with, record things via line-input, Burn CDs or DVDs for backups or creating copies or actually selfmade audio CDs and video DVDs or just playing back your movies or music on it from such disc and ripping them, plugging in a printer and print out text or pictures, connecing additional hardware via the PC cardbus expansion, being able to hook up an external Monitor or a Beamer / Projector, letting it run as a server, being able to use it as a diagnostics device thanks to its multiple I/O ports.. plugging in a DV / HDV camcorder via firewire and transfering your videos from tape to the PC or the other way round or using a DV interface Box which converts video from analog to digital and vice versa, in realtime and without intense compression .... All these things that made PCs seem to me like machines i can do anything with and only being limited by my imagination or CPU power and RAM. You can tell how much of a scam modern day laptops are when a 10 - 16 year old Laptop is still usable. And the only thing modern software does is consuming more RAM and CPU power for things the same software in older versions did with the Hardware provided by such machines like Thinkpads of that time. Is that Progress?

    Even with a Core 2 Duo, the X60's 3GB RAM limitation severely curtails its usefulness especially due to Windows 10's heavy RAM usage. Also, the Core 2 Duo models run much hotter compared to the Core Duo. I'd suggest the succeeding Thinkpad X61 instead, which has a slightly tweaked X60 chassis, but with a newer chipset that supports 8GB max RAM (albeit still DDR2) and faster CPUs (the top end model is a Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5GHz). Also, most X61's come equipped with a 5GHz-capable WiFi card (Intel 4965AGN); it's only 802.11N @ 300Mbps, but still much better than 2.4GHz-only WiFi.

    @@jiroyamada1139 You clearly do not know a lot about windows. Windows limits how much RAM it will consume depending on how much is installed. I have 2gb's of ram installed on my thinkpad T60 and it only consumes 50% of it at idle. so it's very usuable for normal tasks Also a better cpu won't help much at all. all of these older thinkpads are being limited by their GPU which isn't that good anymore at all. I mean you can't even play youtube on 480p without lagging it out. though that's because youtube updated their standard 30fps to 60fps which increases workload a lot. Even linux won't help it much due to the fact that the GPU is limiting it. The only OS that will probably very usuable on these older laptops is android as it is designed for phones that don't have good hardware to begin with.

    2 years late but this review is poor. Not every X60 is 32 bit. Also, installing something like Ubuntu MATE as opposed to Ubuntu would help the performance. And you think it is unusable because it can't watch videos at 1080p? The X60 is special in regards to coreboot and libreboot, meaning the X60 is one of the few machines that support having an external bios without having to flash it. Programming on the X60 is also a treat with it's comfy/tactile keyboard. I urge you to reconsider your view, even if you already got rid of the laptop

    1. The X60 would not run too well in normal Ubuntu running GNOME, so I advise installing something like Debian (which my X60 runs) or Lubuntu (which is Ubuntu just with the LXQT desktop environment) 2. Depends, if you're using a 32 bit processor (the Core Duo series, as opposed to Core 2 Duo), there will be no more updates for the 32 bit processors, so you need to use (L)Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as that will still support 32 Bit Processors. 3. I'm not sure about Linux Mint 4. Also depends on your processor, I have one with a Core 2 Duo T7600 and it runs nicely. 5. Anything is good with the X60, Arch, flavors of Ubuntu, Debian, so go with what you want.
