Things Not To Say To Eastern European People

Ойын-сауық

Whether it's people presuming your entire diet is made up of vodka and cabbage, or being told to ‘go back to your own country’ by one person, while the next asks if you’ll ‘do their bathroom’ (at a reduced rate of course) - if you’re Eastern European, you’ll probably be tired of hearing these.

You can tell that a girl is from the USA just by her makeup and hair. At least I can, but I've noticed it's a thing that not everyone can do. Nothing wrong with it, but it comes in handy. For example I met a young Canadian girl who looked Czech to me (I am Czech) and I told her casually and she said that yes, when communism came to power, her family fled to Canada. I can also tell if a person lives in the us or Europe by their furniture (like in room or house tours on ytb), but that might just be because I love interior design and I've seen a lot of pictures.

The massive immigration of some of the best specialists on the continent, educated elsewhere for free, is quite possibly the best argument against the "you rely on our cohesion funds so STFU" narrative. I mean yeah, it's not like the senders of emigrants didn't get anything out of it themselves (the remittances, for example) but the net result is still overwhelmingly negative. Some of those countries are literally becoming extinct, their pension systems are on the verge of collapsing. It's easy to say "just accept more migrants yourselves" because first off, it's an open secret that practically every single country of the post-2004 enlargement is very much open to immigration (the refugee crisis drama was just a show for the local electorates) but very few can actually attract f. Soviet and South Asian workers in numbers that are even nearly enough to compensate for all those who left for the West. Anybody who comes there might as well just move several hundred miles to the left and boom, he's in Germany earning four times as much. Only Poland and the CR managed to attract several hundred Ukrainians and mostly just because the languages are similar. But what are the Lithuanians or Latvians supposed to do? Nobody speaks anything resembling their languages and they are the most desperate to fill the gaps. Similarily, almost nobody is coming to Bulgaria or Romania and they proportionately lost much more people than Poland or Hungary.

The problem is this could be seen as something "selfish" by some people in Europe, because English is being spoken almost around the whole world, so here comes the: "Why learning another language when most people already speak mine"? But that's when they still had schools to teach those things. But then they started the whole thing you should be American and I only speak English it. And they shut the schools down. Well, I'm Latvian, and I live in the UK (more specifically, London). The only things I've encountered under this "please stop asking" umbrella for me would be: whether I speak Russian, and an assumption that Latvians are Slavs (they're not - they're Balts, like Lithuanians). It's annoying because of our painful history with Russian invasions, so most Latvians will very much dislike being associated with anything Russian. However, I understand that it's normal that people can't know everything about every country's culture, language, and history - I might make similar mistakes myself. The most important thing is to listen and to nod politely when somebody explains you stuff. I still remember a Spanish guy I met on a beach in Barcelona many years ago who tried to chat me up and was dead-set that I was Russian, spoke Russian, everything RUSSIAN, Russian, Russian, Russian, even when I told him that I wasn't and that the languages were not similar at all. The guy was quite surprised that his attempts didn't end very well. However, I've never been asked to fix somebody's bathroom yet, so I guess I've got fun stuff to look forward to!

@@59AJ59 In fact, Eastern Europe can be even more multidimensional than Western for the simple reason of it being much more religiously diverse. In the West, everywhere you go you see Catholic churches and Prostetant churches which don't really look that much different from Catholic ones (as many used to be Catholic themselves a few hundred years ago). In the East, the minute you move from Poland to Ukraine the churches you pass by start looking completely different. Similarily, the North-South divide is just as pronounced there as it is further West: Balts, Poles and Czechs are serious and somewhat gloomy like Germans whereas Serbs, Croats and Bulgarians are easygoing and sociable like Italians.

The shit that annoys me most about being polish is that when I was younger I was told almost every day that I, a Polish child, started the Holocaust. Its like no, the Nazis did that and that there were 'Polish concentration camps', no they were nazi camps in Poland because lots of Jewish people lived in Poland. I also hate the assumption that no Polish people were in the concentration camps or killed. Polish people were the second largest group to be killed by the concentration and death camps.

Why don’t they call their country Peonia which is actually the ancient name of the region they live in? Did they just wake up one day and decided they don’t like Slavs?
