    percussive maintenance is a thing! If your HDD is dead and wont spin up, turn the PC on and give the HDD a short sharp knock with something - you can often get it to spin up once more (to get data off it) before it dies fully :D

    This is true. Also freezing a dying HDD for 1-2 hrs sometimes works (if the platters are warped) because the cold shrinks the platters and allows them to spin easier. These are, of course, very temporary "fixes" to just pull data from a dying drive!

    Redditor here! As an IT professional, I found this video quite humorous. It tickled my tummy a light shade of pink. I work from home (due to my bad knees, diabetes, and high blood pressure) and am not officially 'employed' by anyone, but I am an expert on the subject and spend most of my day on my PC. When I'm not browsing Reddit, I like to watch the latest episodes of My Little Pony or play Legends of Equestria (a MLP MMO). - Trilby McTip, Redditor, Brony, IT Professional

    "I love windows". Now I'm no IT person, but I've been programming and using computers intensively since 1994 and I do love windows. Can some IT person clue me in on this one?

  • @nubakos

    @nubakos

    9 жыл бұрын

    9Mystere9 I'm not working in IT, but as an IT student I see many colleagues who used to rely solely on Windows switching over to Linux, or at least trying it out. And of course, quite a few people love Macs (if they can afford them, that is).As I haven't used a Mac, I can only comment on Windows vs. Linux. Linux is open source, which means that the community (not the user base, but the people who actually actively engage with the program and its users) is stronger, and more dedicated. It also means that there's more documentation available (and being made every day by different people) - whereas on Windows, almost all documentation has to be released by Microsoft, making it maybe more streamlined, but also much more limited. This is very important when it comes to bugs, troubleshooting etc., and that's why many IT people prefer the open nature of Linux to the closed one of Windows.There are also a lot of other differences, like customization, security, stability, system resources etc., but I don't know if you'd be interested in that. Personally, I used to use only Windows, then started using Linux in parallel, and now rarely ever getting back to Windows. The only thing that kept me getting back to Windows were the games, which were practically non-existent on Linux, but thanks to Steam this has changed in the last two years and I'm also gaming on Linux, and only switching to Windows to play Windows-exclusive games.To be clear, I don't consider Windows bad as in "broken". I just feel like it's a golden cage, pretty on the outside but not really as useful as the open and free Linux. Hope the above helped a little :)

  • @9Mystere9

    @9Mystere9

    9 жыл бұрын

    Elias Regopoulos It helps a little. It seems like in that regard Mac would be even worse in that it's less customizable. I know mac probably claims it's more stable and has better security and resource management, but I'd like to see an even-handed comparison. I tried to use linux a while back, but I realized that my primary need for an operating system was to be compatible with everything(mainly Japanese software programmed specifically for windows) and to cost me as little time getting things working as possible. In my case, Linux simply couldn't stand up in either area.

    Pretty much every IT person will hate every OS in varying degrees for different reasons. When your job is to fix something for a living, you learn to hate various aspects of it. Windows in particular because it's ubiquitous, so most of your tickets are probably going to come from there anyway, but also because Microsoft has this lovely habit of trying to shake things up every now and then changing things because they can. Oh, and forced updates.

    I tell my users to hit their devices with a hammer. Printer not working? Hit it with a hammer. Can't send an email? Hit it with a hammer. I don't actually expect them to do it, and most know I'm joking. It seems to put them in a good mood going into a call. But maybe I'll get lucky one day and hear the smashcrunchfizzle of a hammer and an electronic device on the other end of the phone.
