the views and opinions expressed in this video are based on my personal experiences in ham radio. I avoid selling or purchasing used. 1) If you sell something to someone in your area and something stops working properly, all of a sudden you are at odds with this person as they either want their money back, or want to you repair it. that person now doesn't want to talk to you or even see you. 2) I buy new as much as possible. I want a warranty. :)

    If I sold something to someone and they needed it fixed or wanted their money back within a few months of buying it, they’d get my help fixing it quickly or their money back instantly, baring unusual circumstances. You integrity is all you got. Especially in a small group of grumpy old men in a HAM community. What’s wrong with people!?

    That's ridiculous. If you're really an enthusiast you'll have to buy used because those radios from 30 years ago like the Icom 781 and numerous top of the line Yaesus and Kenwoods have audio that the new radios can't compete with, especially with all the SDRs. It was just mellower sounding audio especially when using headphones. It's not all about buying a new radio bud. There's a whole world out there for people that actually appreciate what amateur radio really is. You're old and stuck in your ways and that's NOT healthy.

    Whaaat? I buy ONLY used radios, and fix them myself, some times it takes me years, but the hands on experience is priceless, the last time I purchased any new rig was probably a diamond antenna 6 years ago, the last new rig? 25 years maybe, it's so fun repair your own stuff, sometimes I found more fun fixing them than using them! But I get it that every one has its own preferences and that's okay😊

    @@NickWindhamBuying something used is a risk. I'm not taking a hit for some clown that's too cheap to buy new IF I know I sold them a good working product that didn't have any issues, which is all I do. If there's a problem, I either fix it first, or alert them about it before they give me money. there's nothing more annoying than some clown buying something off you that doesn't know what he's doing and then when he can't figure out how to get it to work he claims that you tried to rip him off when the reality is he just doesn't know what he's doing that happened to me once and it's very annoying. I had to waste four hours helping the guy remotely to get his set up going so that he would just keep and enjoy the radio and not broadcast to the world that I was ripping him off or whatever...and the thing that really pissed me off is that he got such a great deal from me on an Icom base tranceiver and I was like not happy that I'd let it go that cheap, so selling used equipment is no picnic for an honest guy either.

    @@hamradiohack it’s not bad. It’s 100 questions multiple choice and that’s for the basic licence. The advance is 50. Need 70% to pass either one but for one to get a license, you need to start with a basic and move you way up to advance.

  • @northerial

    @northerial

    Ай бұрын

    Also, your basic license comes in two categories. Basic or basic with honours. So, if you pass with 70% to 79%, you get your basic which allows the operator to operate anywhere above 30mhz. If you get 80% or more on your basic exam, you get a basic with honours and that gets all HF and everything above 30mhz. With basic/basic with honours, you’re restricted to a few things however such as power output, not using home made amplifiers and running a in band repeater to name a few. Most people get their basic with honours and stop there because you get all amateur radio bands.

    One other thing, our amateur radio license is good up to your 125th birthday. So, no renewal, no annual fee, etc. You write it, pass and you’re good for life. You also get to choose your own callsign assuming it’s available to use and reflects the province/territory you’re in. I guess we’re spoiled up here when it comes to amateur radio. lol 😂

As a retired RF engineer, I could tell you without reservation that the majority of these people, even "the old salty dogs" don't know wtf their talking about technically a lot of the time. Agree with your points! Sadly there are a lot of clowns on the bands these days. I was very active for a while. But then got tired of the bs. So i don't even bother to turn the gear on anymore! Picked up an HF rig from a local once. He said everything was there. Radio was dirtly, not at full power, and didn't have the mic. Yep, i can't stand the folks that ask for a callsign a dozen times, then say 5/9. Really? What a joke! Yep, the hams are no better now than the general population. While I don't mind helping others, i have no time for the GI Joe wannabes the hobby/service seems to be attracting these days.(prepper types) Then there's the types that commit to being at an activity, test session, ect that back out at the VERY last minute! Seen that too. Guy promised to be at a emcomm drill. He backed out as things were getting going. Turns out, he drove 40 miles to get ice cream! It's a very small club of about a dozen active members. So everyone mattered. I've had some folks be VERY rude to me on air as well! So guess what? To hell with them! And for the most part, to hell with ham radio now! Got better things to do than listen to some old guy talking about his health problems. Hey buddy, thats between you and your doctor! NOT you and the rest of the world! I don't care that you can't get hard anymore! I don't need to know about it! But if you correct them, they flip out! Really? Then maybe go to the goooood buddy band! But keep it off the ham bands!
