I think to be fair, let's cut the song some slack. Ok it's a limited song in terms of lyrics, with no chorus, but the blues style riff churns along quite neatly throughout the entire track. Which serves its purpose of being an all out bluesy track, I think it is really the sort of track you would put on when all hope is lost, and it's a Sunday afternoon, and this song grinding it's way out of the terrible week you just had, it seems so suitable. There is some great musicianship and great vocals from Phil on this, it's hard to say it's a weak track. It could be seen as a generic blues song, as in its all been done before, but I think these songs are stepping stones to bigger things for Thin Lizzy, and could be viewed as the foundation of Phil's influence towards the band and what he wanted out of his future creativity. If we look at how he could write incredibley slow deep and meaningful songs like Spirit Slips Away, or The Sun Goes Down, I think it all stems from when the seed was down on tracks like Broken Dreams, or Slow Blues is also a fantastic track. I think the whole Thin Lizzy catalogue is a complexity to behold, and I am so proud of you Greg for taking it on. Looking forward to the next Thin Lizzy Thursday.

I think for a lesser band this song would rank much higher, but Thin Lizzy has shown it can do the blues in far more clever ways, even in the same era. I like the track, it's fine, but it doesn't offer anything special to the genre and isn't catchy enough to stand out amongst blues standards. Solid playing, decent lyrics, mediocre writing of the music itself. Still, it's pleasant. It's not a bad track, I'm not in love with it, but I'm glad you dig it. Cheers to the next TLT! : )

Can we all agree that the Dokken song at the beginning this week is better than Broken Dreams?

I don't think we can. But as it is the fiftieth anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision Song Contest, can we agree that ABBA is better than any 1980's hair metal band?

Both can be true.... Tooth and Nail and Broken Dreams are both worthy of much praise here. Why can Greg never admit when he ranked a song a little lower than it deserves? It's ok to correct your errors after the fact.

And I don't believe that Delor actually thinks ABBA is "better than the 1980's" Whitesnake albums: Ready An' Willing, Come An' Get It, Saints & Sinners, Slide It In....

Well, you clearly aren’t a blues fan. That’s ok. Some of us prefer blues over a “generic” pop song. I’d say this is a good song, way better than a good number of songs you have above it. Though I will grant you that it meanders a little at the end. Not sure that it needs 60 seconds cut. Maybe 30.

Oh dear. Not enough saccharine in Greg's tea. Yes, it's a generic blues song, but Thin Lizzy didn't do very many of those, so it has its place. They keep it interesting by building the arrangement verse by verse, and what makes it stand out for me is Phil's vocal, which is unlike anything else he ever recorded. In the great scheme of things, it's not one of Thin Lizzy's best, but I would still take this on an endless loop over Taylor Swift's entire career.

Look, I love Thin Lizzy and overall I take Lizzy over TS, but I'm not going to act like them doing generic blues is better than TS' best material. :P

@@gregtroyanIf you can't appreciate what Eric is doing in this song, then I can't help you. It's fantastic playing and very different than most blues players. You can call Blues Boy "generic" but this is fantastic! This is a gem in the catalog for those of us in the know.😏

@@Michael----- I did say the solo was a highlight of the song. A good solo isn't enough for me to care, though. I'm more interested in songwriting than good playing. The writing here just isn't interesting.

@@gregtroyan That's fair enough. We're here for your wise words and gospel according to Greg. I said to someone on another channel that fans of bands should stop living in their echo chambers of complacency and not take it personally if someone disagrees that their favourite band or song is the GOAT. Of course they didn't get it. It's not about better, it's about personal preference. The world would be a dull place of we all agreed.

When nobody reactors think they are the authority on whether a song should be shorter in length.🤦😙😌 Edit:: The writing trio of Bell, Downey, and Lynott disagree. I've heard longer versions of this song that are even better.
