Very well explained. I'm using monarch mkii for the last six months. I'm pretty much happy with the Sq on mkii. I feel bass quality is not so great. I'm pairing mkii with cayin mkii e02 module. Great review! You've taken lot of efforts to describe the sound differences between them. The visual for over-sharpening and resulting artefacts is exactly how I've always imagined 'fake' detail. You mentioned the HD800s in the same breath as these, took me by surprise. I always thought IEMs are a compromise (portability over sound quality). Soundstage aside, how far apart would you say a $1000 IEM is to a similarly priced Headphone?
@PassionforSound
Жыл бұрын
I think IEMs provide comparable or sometimes better performance than equivalent headphones because there's less production cost in most cases (no headbands, padding, etc.) You're obviously losing soundstage as you said and bass feel is rarely as good because the drivers are so small, but beyond that, I think IEMs are a better bang-for-buck option than headphones. Comfort and usability need to be considered too though as some people can't wear IEMs for extended periods.

The Monarch MKII competes surprisingly well with my $1200 USD ZMF Aeolus, and I'm biased in favor of full size cans. Though the Aeolus is particularly known for its midrange, the Monarch's vocals are probably a bit more natural. But the Aeolus moves well ahead on slam and soundstage. Though they provide very different listening experiences, I'd say they both are in the same rough ballpark for sound quality.
@rahullamba9318

@@marlowe1537 Ceteris paribus, soundstage by itself is enough to swing it in favour of the headphones, no? At least that's how I saw it from a comparison against my crappy m50 vs IM-70 & Fiio EX1, a decade ago. But similarly priced IEMs these days get a LOT more praise today so I was hoping somehow that gap may have narrowed down. Lachlan's point of 'value' is reassuring too. Monarch MK2 seems to have a very smooth neutral measurements. All measurements I’ve seen for the KSE1200 seem to have major dips and peaks (just seeing oratory eq correction for them) - I’m at crossroads as I value your opinion but I’m also a bit of a measurebator - are you finding the KSE on par with tonality? Do you find you have to use EQ?
@PassionforSound
Жыл бұрын
The KSE1200 has the best overall sound of any IEM I've tried so far. Of course, personal ear anatomy and sensitivity comes into play (kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2hl0bONlqe9maw.html) but also driver count and coherency and general driver performance too. I don't feel the need for any EQ at all with the KSE1200.
@Emilbakalinov
Жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I found the kse1200 extremely sensitive to tips: the comply and silicone tips didn’t control the treble peak enough (also as per measurements) The triple flange with deeper inserts made them warmer and tonally correct. Which tips do you use? There was a huge amazon sale 50% off on the Kse1200 and about 30% in the mest mk2 - it was a close call which one to get (without hearing them ) - I’m glad I watched your review on the Shures, they are indeed in a league or their own comparing to other iems like Andromeda, U12t etc

That will vary from headphone to headphone. What's fairly consistent though is that IEMs will tend to provide greater resolution and detail retrieval than an equivalently priced headphone because they have such a direct connection to our ears. On the other hand they will rarely create as good of a soundstage.

No, but it's a bit different still - not just the usual dynamic or BA drivers.
I have the Monarch MK II and like it much more than you do. (Admittedly, I have not heard the Sennheisers or any other IEMs in this price range or above.) Vocals and certain instruments (pianos especially) are the most natural I've ever heard. Though I'm more a full size headphone guy, they even beat my beloved ZMF Aeolus here, though the Aeolus wins easily on slam and bass impact and soundstage; the Monarch MK II is reasonably wide for an IEM--a little outside the head--but can't compete with any of my full size open backs except the exceptionally narrow Sennheiser HD 6XX. One small error in the review: only four of the Monarch MKII's BAs take care of the midrange. The other two BAs do bass along with the dynamic driver.

Awful headphones, nothing more than sub bass and drilling mid-treble.

Sorry you feel that way, MM. Sounds like you might have some interestingly shaped ear canals! (That's not a criticism - I did a video a little while back about how differently we all hear things depending on the anatomy of our ears)
The MK1 has the bass and down sloping response to increased output impedance. The MK2 went for MEST and missed. The hype train sold this pair before everyone got their hands on it under the umbrella of "the sequel must be better". I think anyone "upgrading" from the MK1 was disappointed and everyone else blind buying fully committed to Stokholm Syndrome. The cable is nice and the shells look great though.

I hadn't read anything about these and I don't like the MEST so your implication about this being influenced by hype doesn't stack up. They're a lovely IEM with the right tips and source, but I do prefer the IE600 and IE900.

@@PassionforSound amongst those who do blind buy and previously had MK1's that's the consensus. The difference is between those who have the baseline and those coming from something technically less proficient. Anyhow it's WAYYYY too late. Always look forward to your next video
Monarch 2 didn’t give “yes!” impression on first hearing. If anything, you are right about the over emphasis on the treble… distracting the neutrality. Without the hype & measurement, I don’t think it’ll win the ‘love at first’ hear for the masses. The wonky, for HM target std, measured Sennheisers appeals more to uninformed neutral listeners.

I do prefer the IE600 and IE900 for sure, but the Monarch Mk2 is an interesting tuning that can be quite impressive from a detail retrieval and separation point of view
Ie900 are crap, in my humble opinion. Thanks.

Why do you think they're crap?

@@PassionforSound after trying them in Germany this year, I found nothing special about them for their initial price (1,299$). I have Acoustune hs1650 (700$) and these are on par with them. I was using my A&K SP2000 and the ones who really impressed me were the u12t. My 2 cent 😁

All good. I was just honestly curious for your impressions. 🙂
5:01 "and I'm not always a fan of silver-plated copper" You lost me there. Hard to take anything else seriously from someone who thinks the cable's material affects the sound. 🤦🏽♂️

That's ok. I could say the same about people who haven't explored this for themselves to find out that it does, but choose to criticise those who have.
