They Were SMOKING Baits off the Pier!!! Skyway Pier Fishing!

In pursuit of catching some land-based mackerel and albies, aka bonita, I set out to fish the Skyway Fishing Pier in Tampa Bay. The fish were chewing this day on live baits, and while I didn't have the best hookup ratio initially, I was able to put together a solid catch off the pier.

“Point Cadet Bridge” which we use to call the “Back Bay Bridge” in the 1980’s is another pier you can drive on. It was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and then rebuilt and renamed. Red fish, black drum, sheepshead, flounder, can’t forget the sand trout and the speckled trout. Good old Biloxi Mississippi. I’m not going to talk about the pinfish, catfish, and stingrays 😂🎣

Next time, daisy chain the long shank hooks together (hook through the eyelet of the other hook) you might have to thump it to get it through the eyelet. I’ve seen people do it with 3 hooks in a row to prevent bite offs.

When I went there this Sunday I caught 1 gag grouper (keeper) 3 bonitas, at this time of the year you can only catch em near schools of bait. 7 mangrove snapper (only kept 5 since it was the limit). Arrive the right time and you will get keepers for sure! Also for those mackerels always use long shank hooks.

Bro i realized why Louisiana is called sportsman's paradise. The creel limits match the bite. Allowing people to keep one two fish on most species is chicken shit of fla. Though the variety of species is a little more here from land. Both have their goods and bads

Great vid and Terry is a legend. What lb test line do you use for this kind of fishing? Any tips for this kind of fishing if you don’t have a buddy to do the netting (I often don’t but do this kind of high up fishing). I guess I can go high on the lb test and just dead stick them up but I would risk a break offf.

I’ve solo netted this fish before, you’ve just gotta be nimble. And I was running 40lb main line braid, 25lb fluoro leader.

Terry’s a legend. Also why release a fish that slammed on the concrete so hard? Dunno if the poor guy will make it… they aren’t exactly designed to take head blows like that :/

Hey bro , with those small circle hooks and toothy, fast fish , let them take it for at last 2-3 seconds , don’t reel right away you’ll land tons. But yea long shank is the move
