@@elemeno0peeFair enough-- that would indeed be a huge time consuming pain in the ass... That said, if you recall near the end during their "friendly" conversation, the hacker points out that this type of crime exists in a strange area... because it's "too weird for the cops, and too small for the FBI-- as long as you don't SWAT anyone..." So it seems like not swatting the victim, and stopping just short of that, is actually part of the strategy for some of these more clever hackers. (And AFAIK he's generally not wrong, if you know how LEA's work... the cops aren't really equipped, and the feds have much bigger fish to fry.) That's actually pretty smart, tbh. Tho it's a bit of a huge gaping hole in law enforcement... which probably only exists due to the relative rarity of these cases.

The only real way to go forward would be through investigative reporters, or a lot of money. Bugging the hell out of the FBI is a bad idea. You could, after filing a police report, go through a court for the investigation/hire someone to investigate it thoroughly. With the contacts he had, he could also have used his handle as a honyepot. But mostly, investigating such things require an enormous amount of work, and the best way to protect himself would have been to contact local pizzerias, have good opsec, and shut down any new avenue used. Getting swatted, as bizarre as it may sound, is the best option, as you will then have much more police/FBI ressources on the case.

Sweet old grandma forgetting her password is so common and effective as a technique to get your info because its like, oh I have a grandma, and she asked for tech help from me once, and I understand how hard it is at that age to remember things, and I love my own grandma.

Very interesting story. A few points: You could track down the criminal in a few ways (at least in the UK I know the police has access to that). If he made an internet order, then the website if the pizza shop has a log with the IP address of this person. Obviously it could be hidden behind a VPN but usually they use public VPN providers which then in case it's paid would have some form of payment method which might reveal the real person behind it. You can cover your tracks very far, and use for example PayPal registered to a random senseless Gmail which then again leaves you in the dark on how this person pays for the VPN provider. On the other side if the attacker used a SMS texting provider (mostly these services charge) with a police case (and potentially a court order) you'd be able to demand info from the relevant provider. Obviously this company might sell their numbers internationally and the attacker may use a stolen payment method.... It's possible to almost totally cover your tracks by using technologies like VPN and tor combined. But as mentioned by some very senior security expert: "The biggest risk in cyber security is human stupidity since it cannot be patched". Even attackers make mistakes and then eventually get caught. Also I hope you checked on your Gmail that the attacker hasn't created any filters which are set to forward silently emails containing specific words or matching a certain criteria. That's very common practice which hackers do since it provides them access even after you enable to all the security on login. Last but not least there are some very capable private investigators which have GR8 contacts and skills to help you stop such harassment rather then giving in. I hope you get your Instagram handle back soon.....

They can hide their IP with Mullvad’s VPN for $5 a month & they can make calls with TextNow or Google Voice. 🤷‍♂️ Most of the users of the forum mention in the video (OGUsers, which has been rebranded to FLIPD for a while now) are pretty easy to find. Most of them love to brag about what accounts they’ve stolen or currently have access to & they love to maintain an online identity with a static username that they’ll use for years & years.

I'll be *that guy* sorry. It's crazy how obsessed (let's be honest, addicted) people have become with being "connected" 24/7 to the point where someone can saying losing their phone number and or access to their social media accounts is "the worst nightmare anyone can imagine." I understand the overuse of that comment, it's up there with someone telling their story and saying, "I literally just died." Deal with a terminal illness in the family, unexpected death of a loved one, murder, rape, suicide, kidnapping, or military deployment in a combat zone, then you'll have a whole new perspective on "worst nightmares." I understand your comment is an attempt at making a point, but so is mine. Unplug for a minute and touch some grass people. It also helps to not click links in messages from people you don't know and or not click on links in emails from people you don't know. The weak link in this scenario isn't the technology (i.e. SIM) it's the consumer/user of the technology. And lastly, if you're not using multi-factor authentication (MFA/2FA) you're pretty much asking to be "hacked" in some capacity. Most tech companies/suppliers/vendors have "consumer/user safeguards" in place, it's just people don't want to (or won't) use them for whatever reason.

Come on now, this is such a trivial issue to fix. There can't be that many pizzerias in close proximity to the guy's address. You just make a few phonecalls to the major chains and the mom & pop shops and warn them. Ditto for parents/ex wife. If the bell makes you stressed, just disconnect it. You don't negotiate with terrorists like this, it only leads to more people getting scammed.

Sim-swapping has happened to many celebrities, professional athletes, and politicians for years. Instagram (Meta) is very good at logging everything that happens on their service. The police can pretty easily checkup on that. However, the issue is that a lot of the time these guys simply don’t slip up. It’s pretty easy to set aside some spare change for a device to harden your opsec when you’re stealing accounts for a living. The other unfortunate reality is that they don’t really get a very harsh penalty even when they are caught. A good portion of the people doing stuff like this for social media accounts are teens and they get off with a slap on the wrist in most cases. Even the sim swappers that steal millions in crypto currency are only getting a couple years. 😕

The victim changed mobile providers after the first SIM swap attack to fuzz his ID to the attacker. The obfuscation attempt failed.

42:55 it has NOTHING to do with not being tech savvy. it has everything to do with general PD apathy. if ignoring the crime doesn't lower their stats to imply that they're not doing their job, they don't care. if it doesn't boost their stats up in categories that generates revenue like tickets/citations, they won't move a finger to do anything. This is the reality at every single PD of any urban city. wtf was she a cop to not know any of this?

also, despite him thinking that he is now more security savvy, this guy is not very bright at all. he had no business telling the pizza delivery guy that the phone number was his "before". that wasn't his phone number anymore. so the answer should have been "no that's not my phone number" and not volunteer anymore information ffs.

Honestly, if you gonna lose the account, you might as well sell it. Edit : Also, we don't need more on the police's plate. They already have a hard time handling what they got. We need a branch for this that's not as stuck up as the FBI to handle the cyber world
