They're 'Effing' EVEREST Up! Then V. Now with Everest Coach Alan Arnette

Thom Pollard sat down with Everest Chronicler Alan Arnette to talk about all things Everest. "they" (you included by the way) have been effing the place up a decade or so before you ever set foot there. You made history there ! I get it. Use your game and pull to start a new trend by cleaning the mountain up! JMR

One of the most viewed videos on this channel is all about the garbage and human waste problem on Everest. I've also done a video about the garbage and human waste on K2...and intend to follow that story in the spring when the commercial expeditions are under way. Here's the K2 video called Pigsty in the Sky: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qX1r28aij9rViqw.html Here's the Everest live event with six guests, called The Garbage Problem on Everest and What's Being Done About It: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k62AlcGsgJPccZc.html While everyone who steps into that region is technically part of the problem, there are many who care deeply about it. Thanks for watching, -Thom

Totally agree. I didn’t like how they spoke about the Sherpas, let’s be frank the majority of summiteers wouldn’t have made it past trekking without the Sherpas. The place is now a shit tip quite literally. A lot of these people going up have more money than sense so they’re not bothered about leaving their litter on the mountain. The prices are pricing out so many who are able to climb and know the dangers out of achieving their dreams, which i why it’s called a millionaires playground. There has to be something for those people to climb and return without paying over £100k, let’s face it most could use that to purchase a first house in some places. The usual reply is get sponsorship, get donations or remortgage your house. It’s been my dream for years, however I’d have to brown nose and schmooze with rich people to make it happen.

Thom, excellent choice, on having Alan Arnette ,as your guest! Alan always does his homework in the Himalayas, and around the world, every climbing season! Thom, I wonder what Everest, will become in the far future! Climate changes, are affecting, the ice melting! Will Nepal, better the mountain, for climbers? And possibly, eliminating the khumbu ice fall, climb? Helicopters have really changed, the way things are brought up, and down ,in that region! thank you!

These are great questions. Thank you for your insight and thoughts.... It looks like the future is wide open. With the changes come great opportunities for innovation and new ways to do things. Hopefully, as Nepal continues to let more people climb the mountain, they can work out the human waste and garbage situation there. Thanks as always for watching!

I can hardly wait for the rest of this interview to come out! I've been interested in Everest for most of my life, but this year I found both your channel and Alan's channel and you two have rapidly become my favourite sources for information about high-altitude climbing. Does this mean that you will be appearing on Alan's channel in the future?

Tom I live in NH too and what I’d give to take u to dinner here in Manchester and tell me some tales! I’m a 59 yr old woman with blue hair LOL who wishes I had been more adventurous as a young adult. I’ve climbed some NH mountains but I’d say I’m a hiker and definitely not a climber but ur so much more than just a climber- ur an adventurer a detective an ecologist an Everest Expert a fellow New Hampshirian (alum of UNH maybe like myself?)

NH transplant...born and raised in western Mass...lured by the ice climbing of New Hampshire. Perhaps there is an organization or group down there interested in sponsoring an event near you to do an Everest presentation....might be worth exploring! Cheers and thank you for watching!

"Are they ruining Everest?" For people like me, born in the '50s when it was first climbed and was a great accomplishment, and only experienced mountaineers did it---- to see the entire Everest experience in 2022 just another Las Vegas/Disneyland sideshow with hundreds of wannabee mountaineers lined up to climb it ---- and the only qualification is that you can pay the $50,000 + ticket---- my opinion is "YES". When there are hundreds of dead bodies littering the slopes (some of whom I think go there to commit suicide), this is the ultimate form of human pollution of a magnificent natural treasure. I also recognize that it's a major source of employment and cash flow for the Sherpas and the Nepalese government, but nevertheless it's a terrible thing for me to witness in my lifetime.

Joe, it's truly a sight to behold (that is not always a good thing!). In China they are doing it differently....well, for starters, they haven't allowed any foreigners to climb the mountain since 2019. Only Chinese nationals are allowed on the mountain. While I find that quite restricting, as I'd LOVE to return, they have shown through their intensive mountain cleanups and strict rules that they aren't motivated by getting as many people to the top as they can. Now, all that said, they are building an enormous mountaineering center in the village of Tingri, and will soon be transporting hundreds of thousands of tourists to gaze upon the spectacle of Everest. Thank you for sharing and for watching!

A lot of talk for people who want to listen to a lot talk. The listners love to feel being aboard the wagon. A lot of bullshit, I would say. Bloke from Aus.

Yeah, if I were to do this interview again I'd probably cut everything in half...not do such long intros. My more recent videos are different, shorter, less intro stuff. Lots of changes over time... Cheers, thanks for watching
