Sadly, when I first saw this movie as a young man, the subtle message in it TOTALLY eluded me!! (It took me personally TWO DECADES to realize this movie was NOT just "eye candy" for young men barely out of adolescence who like "action" and "shoot-em-ups". Of course, being partially raised on Mtv when that channel did nothing BUT music videos back in the day when this movie came out did not make me any smarter either.

A lot of movie (especially blockbusters) don’t film in real location that much anymore. It’s all green screen. While it can produce good stuff most of the time, it feels and look weird.

I will always remember my dad renting this from the video store on VHS. Almost fell asleep during the first half hour but Carpenters score & his masterful filmmaking kept me drawn into it… A few years back Piper visited my city & I had a chance to meet him & ended up getting stuck working OT 😢 RIP sir…

This is one of John Carpenters best films in my opinion. Roddy Piper was great in this film. The fight in the alley over the glasses was epic.

Ridiculous back in the day, absolutely spot on today. The brains behind this movie had sussed the game long ago. We have literally been sleepwalking into this.

I went to see it twice during the two weeks that it played in my town and there was no one else in the auditorium, just like big Trouble in Little China. It was a flop. These films didn't gain a cult following until they hit VHS and late nite tv. I just happen to like John Carpenter. I'm 100% sure of one thing.. The 'Illuminati' aren't worried that people will 'wake up' from watching this.. So eat my shorts..

The glasses are a metaphor for those who can see what is truly going on and those who cannot.

In 1988 I thought this was just a harmless, horror/sci-fi film.... turns out it was a prediction of the future. A peek into what society would become. This is LITERALLY what we're living in right now.

For me, the internet was my "pair of glasses." By the late 1990's, I had lived my entire adult life in a state of frustrating confusion. But, then, the internet became flooded with information that could not be censored and the doors of knowledge opened almost magically. It was like a catharsis. Unions are basically sellout institutions also. Capitalism subsumed them - look at how the AFL-CIO supported the Vietmma War policies of Johnson and Nixon (Hard Hat Riots etc.).

This movie shows us that People are asleep Even when awake. People sleep 8 hours, Job 8 hours, and iPhone rest of the days. We are trapped in this fit rutine So We cant think whats really going on...

There is no planned conspiratorial system afoot, where faceless demons are in control and we are all on puppet strings. I ditched my childlike thinking years ago. But I completely understand where you are at. The truth is, NOBODY is really at the wheel. We're lucky systems this big actually work, and need to be grateful the west has figured out as much as we did over the last couple centuries. I'd suggest some Jordan Peterson for you... gratitude and astonishment is what you need... not resentment and narcissistic skepticism. I could get into a long lecture about the miracle of western structure, ambition, freedom, reward, law & order, respect for authority, respect for history, and schedules... but it would be too long. If you don't understand you are in the top 1% of 1% of humanity that has ever lived on the planet to date, when it comes to the ease and amenities of your life... then I suggest you just move to The Congo and see what the opposite of that is like. We are NOT living in this movie. This movie is a thing called FICTION.

Indeed, this is pure reality now. They want from us only to obey., without questions.

I love the perfect timing of the traffic sound effects when he is putting on the glasses and taking them off.

Some of the stuff coming out of Hollywood has been a warning about possible dangers of not thinking for ourselves.

It's interesting how people so strongly attach their own beliefs to this movie, thinking that they're the truly enlightened ones and everyone else is under control. Same with The Matrix. Ironically, some of the people who are most under control are the ones who are convinced that they've seen through it all, unaware that they've just under a different type of control.

The search for the truth never ends and that in itself can become an unhealthy addiction that could waste your time and energy. An addiction like playing video games or binge watching TV shows. I take doses of truth in moderation just enough to understand what is what and why then I live my life.

This film is more relevant than ever

I don't think its something supernatural going on, rather nefarious. We are conditioned and programmed by so much stimuli. As someone who codes and does graphic design, I see how those same principles were used to manipulate people. Code is more akin to how we are conditioned and literally programmed to act, behave, and think. Graphic design is a trip because I put up signs like ones shown here to literally make you do exactly that, but disguised as a friendly company. In a way, I am a slave who is used to enslave others to consume. Crazy reality.

Aside from the cheesiness, the message of this movie was very powerful and true. They live and we sleep.

This movie is the pinnacle of John Carpenter cheese

One of the finest examples of predictive programming ever produced. See also, pilot episode of The Lone Gunman.

The scene when he is fighting Keith David is a commentary of how we fight each other and cause divisions instead of the big bad. I always like that subtle input, especially for Piper being a poor white working class guy and Keith David a black working class man.

Remember watching this documentary when I was a kid. Good times.

Funny ... how Buttigieg takes a two week vacation just as over 100 container ships are anchored of the west coast of US unable to unload. Loved this film I still watch it to this day. We are the few ones who can "see". We see the demons Pretending to be people. This movie is based on our world.

This movie was my favorite as a child.Now I know why....My gut always knew the truth.

I finally saw They Live this year. It certainly makes me contemplate why so many people see everything or even enjoy anything in the ways that they do.

I just want to let everybody know that I have never seen this channel, nor have I ever had it recommended to me before. Also, and most importantly, I have just finished watching this movie on Netflix and as soon as I opened youtube this video was recommended to me. They are watching, there's no doubt about it.
