You misunderstand the concept of "aging like wine". It doesn't say anything about the quality of the wine, but about the accuracy. Milk ages poorly, so if everybody in America suddenly was a stable genius, this movie would have aged like milk because it would be very inaccurate. Wine on the other hand ages well, so because Idiocracy is unfortunately reality now, it aged like wine.

The fact that Crocs were the choice of foot wear for the movie cracks me up and also makes me want to cry. In 2006 Crocs were pretty much unknown. The wardrobe director just thought that they were dumb look and something idiots would wear in the future. Cut to about twenty years later…. And yeaaaaah. Ouch

That's not exactly true. The story is that crocs were a new startup at the time they filmed the movie in 2004. The director was worried that they might become popular already by the time the movie came out in 2006, but they used them anyways thinking they wouldn't be popular anyways. Crocs launched their first large campaign in 2005. It went well and in 2006 the popularity of Crocs skyrocketed. So the director was right that by the time the movie was out, the shoes were already popular. But it didn't end up being an issue, because people just thought it was funny that he had the now popular shoe in a movie filmed 2 years prior. Of course like anything trends rise and fall, and by 2010 crocs were already losing popularity. Then recently they had a resurgence along with other early 2000s brands.

Even since I was a 4 year old in preschool I've wondered why people wait so long to have kids. What is "the right time" anyway? Shouldn't starting a family be more important than money? The opening scene hits so close to home. All of my dumbest friends have a pile of kids, amd no plan. My wife and I who are educated, generally level headed, planned for our future, waited until we could support a family, and are struggling to have a child later in life.

The studios decided ultimately not to mock their sponsors. The film took off and gained a cult following when it hit DVD.

While this is a funny (and terrifying) movie, too many people get the wrong idea that an actual Idiocracy will be caused by "smart" people not having enough babies. The real problem is that intelligence is often wasted or even shunned, while morons are given too much publicity.

@Unabashed Hedonist IQ isn't the only way of measuring intelligence, it's just the most commonly-known one. Even then, those supposedly hereditary IQ correlations aren't proof of genetic intelligence as much as they are proof that parents raise their kids in similar environments to the ones they themselves grow up in. Finally got to watch this after being told for years by friends I should. I consider it one of the most important documentaries of our time. It's nice to see a docu filmmaker take such careful steps to maintain complete historical accuracy as Mr. Judge did here.

Mike Judge was waaaay to optimistic. It didn't even take USA 20 years from the release of the movie to reach this point.

It has happened every time, and this is rather a 1920s docudrama when a the time the 90% were illiterate, harsh, dumb, exploited and living in slums and drinking cocacola magic fix all remedy

It’s painful how real this opening in. The few smart well off relatives I have only have a kid or 2 while all the trashy relatives have at least 4 each (6+ with multiple women in a few situations). I am from New Zealand originally (culturally and economically very similar to the USA) and it is similar there. My cousin who has the most children of mine used to use and deal crystal meth. His parents were alcoholics who my old money left wing grandfather gave control of a 5000 acre farm with 950 cattle and 7500 sheep to because he felt sorry for them. My cousin's mum once ran up a $100K tab on alcohol at a pub in a nearby town and she billed the farm account... no wonder they always struggled financially... anyway, their son has SIX children to three different women and abandoned his now ex wife with whom he had three of them. Dude is a sociopathic trainwreck and he's had more kids than most of my other, more sane, stable cousins put together. So it's not just the US 😳

Except for the fact that it’s just “stupid Southerners” having kids and acting like idiots. I am from Alabama, was a flight attendant, lived in NYC, (for the most part ) ATL,& BOS. I’m a Christian married to a Jew. I’ve seen it all from every standpoint. What this movie didn’t show is all the other groups of people mass procreating including the millions of illegals with at least 5 kids each.

Most of the problems faced by large cities are caused by the fact people are not evolutionarily suited to live in huge overcrowded groups of strangers. If we were herd animals we would be peaceful and larger groups of us would not see a rise in interpersonal conflict like you see in any large city. The propaganda thing you're spot on though.

We are dealing with this exact thing in the US. Critical thinking and respectful converse has become the last action on public issuses. That said, I love this movie.

Its not even a joke anymore. this is reality now.

Absolutely the best opening to a movie ever and so true it is almost not laughable. I was born in 1957 and remember when people were proud to learn, admin when they did not know things. Now, people are so superficial in knowledge and education it is sad to see

Audiences hated the movie when it was shown in test screenings, mixed with the fact that the advertisers who had given Judge permission to use their brands were offended that they were portrayed poorly. Due to Fox receiving hate from the advertisers like Costco and Starbucks Fox decided to release the movie only in 7 theatres in major cities and only because they were legally required to put it in at least 7 theatres. They did the bare minimum the contract allowed because advertisers were threatening to blacklist Fox.

Companies should be confident in their product enough to let a movie parody them without threatening to pull ads on the parent company. Plenty of movies that had a poor test screenings ended up being cult classics like Cohen brothers movies. I'm not a commie but when companies aren't chill enough to get their balls busted by a comedy I think they should be brought back to reality or else we're gonna end up a full blown plutocracy.

Im a 39 college educated man. My 1st wife is a doctor we used to sound exactly like the responsible couple in the beginning.. Fast forward 20 years later and we're both childless looking at 40 in the near horizon.. Hmmm.. Can't say im very happy with my "smart" decisions

I'm 34 f, married for 10 years almost and at a certain point in my life I decided it would probably be better not reproduce myself. Husband never wanted kids in first place so he was totally cool with that and got himself steralised at age 30. When I see people with kids around me I never ever regret our choice, I only consider myself very lucky not having them and that feeling gets stronger everyday. I think if you reallllly want kids you just know this by heart, and it's sad to hear you made the 'wrong' decision. I was always like, yeah well we see, maybe when I'm older or something so I think I never wanted them for real in the first place. If you feel bad for not having kids, then visualize all the nights without sleep, all the worries you have for them being oke, all the money you spend on them and them never being satisfied or thankful to you for raising them. And when you are old and alone they will probably be too busy with their own lives to even take care for you.

If you are a teacher, PLEASE, show this film in class.

Most teaching documentary I have ever watched in my life.

Collins becoming a pimp was my favorite part of the segment. Just that brief look he gives his CO when he won’t let him explain pimp psychology cracks me up.

So accurate its frightening. This wasn't a movie, this was a prophecy that I'm watching unfold today.

The opening of this film comes to mind frequently these days. The film itself is pretty silly, but the concept is prophetic, and the film's opening (here) is painfully brilliant.

Genetic changes via evolution take many, many, many generations. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of years. Intelligence is also not strictly genetic. There's nothing prophetic or brilliant about the opening. It's the same nonsense eugenicists used to say to justify their beliefs back in the early 1900s.
