It needs a re-release in theaters so people can see themselves today. I saw it in theaters and my two friends thought the movie was so awful they wanted me to reimburse them for the tickets. a few years later they realized the movie wasn't bad but just ahead of its time.

Even at half your age, I can see the same writing on the wall. I remember seeing this movie when it came out. I bought it and I made all my friends at least watch that opening monologue. Most found it funny. I found it horrifying. The scariest part is I figured the future it depicted was still a good 50 to 75 years away. Now, just a decade and a half later, so much of it really has already come to pass, but the rest I have realized will be something I will likely live to see myself rather than it being the world of my descendants.

Mike Judge is a freaking genius from the future. I love every project he has created

I honestly didn't even know this movie existed for the longest time, until it was mentioned in a book I was reading. So I asked a few people about, found out it actually existed and watched and LOVED it.

There's literally nothing to back up this rhetoric. In reality Vietnam is held up as an exceptional example of education, despite being relatively poor, certainly ranks higher than the USA for example: www.apec.umn.edu/incomeveducationglewwe China dominates tech, construction etc, and they somehow manage this with all their educated people 'dead', and like all other communist countries for some reason they have education facilities. Send them to university, so you can kill them later... that's some pretty insane logic right there. Albeit there are a huge number...5 communist countries - China, Vietnam, Laos, Cube & North Korea(which is really it's own thing, more akin to a cult at the political level). The much more extreme North Korea & Cuba are doing the worst, Laos is so-so but seemingly improving, while China & Vietnam are booming economically - and are both highly capitalist as well as communist anyway Similarly many democratic/capitalist countries are very different from each other. I can't find anything relating to any particularly significant 'power failure', the rest of that phrase is obviously false, there's obviously no country that's done that.

They should be airing this on the history channel in about 10 years.

In real life, society WILL become stupid AND CRUEL (...one coup against 'da man' at a time). BUT there will be a secret core of clever elites (possibly dames), breeding for those idiots -- a hive. (If not, a marginally smarter society would simply invade, which would start a pressure selecting for clever again.) If humans replace the giant caste of idiots with machines, then Idiocracy (fem-run or otherwise) WON'T happen. Problem is machines are more expensive than the males right now (as expensive as coups are [it's complicated]): A robo vacuum-cleaner-frisbee thing probably works for 87 cents a day for 6 years, while a human works for much less than that for longer [it's complicated]. When machines are created enmasse [labor bots and war bots] (once cheap), the most important skill in society will become hacker [guess hew]. Right now the most important skill is media cretin and "teacher" [...both are "hackers" programming children and the gullible].

LOVE THIS! This history of Judge and his work, shows how hanging in there with ideas, and just doing it is the thing to do. and there IS an audience for those funny ideas we all have. AND in the end this movie will go bigger than the studio powers ever thought.

I had to come across idiocracy in a dvd store, fell into like with the idea then fell in love with the movie. Im a judge fan but i seen no ads for it in that time, glad i did. Its gold!

Mike Judge is so underrated, and criminally unutilized by Hollywood.

I dunno. Beavis and Butthead were a very big deal when they came out. Office Space has one of the biggest cult followings, everybody quotes King of the Hill. I wouldn’t say he’s underrated, he’s rated about where he should be. He’s never gonna be treated like Scorsese or Ridley Scott, Kubrick or James Cameron..he’s very different.

Wtf happened to idiocracy? It’s becoming reality all too soon Mike Judge is the unsung hero of us blue collar fellas, King of the Hill is one of the best animated series of all time.

The timeline made sense in the movie. The premise was people were getting dumber out of biological evolution (stupid people having more children than smart ones), and evolution is slow and takes many generations. We are getting stupider out of technology and cultural (de)evolution, which are much much faster than biology, and accelerating as we speak, unfortunately

Can confirm. I'll be 33 in a few days. My ex wanted a kid but I didn't. I told her the world was just too weird. It hasn't gotten better and I don't think I will be having any kids. But no worries. 6 of the houses around me have like 5 or 6 kids each. They had plenty for the whole neighborhood!

The astronomical mathematics that go into the probabilities of my ever having existed at all are staggering. But I am not a rich person. I can barely afford to feed myself some days. Why would I subject a kid to this? In the end my ex left me for another woman anyway. So she isn't going to be having a baby there lol. But I am still looking into the "old snip" asap. It is reversible should I have a change of heart later in life and it just proverbially takes the option off the table. "I can't have kids so I won't worry so much about the obligation". Man, props to Mike Judge for persevering as the underdog. I'm sure glad he did.

I made my teenage children sit down and watch this with me a few years ago. It turned into an all time favorite of theirs. Years later we still crack each other up with quotes from the movie and are amazed at how real it's becoming..

I watched Idiocracy a bit over 15 years ago and thought it had nailed it even back then. Social dumming down had been in progress much earlier but has gained increadible speed recently

The studio ignored it (hoping it would go away) because it was and is too real. The system does not want anything thought provoking.

I saw this in theaters since I loved everything Mike Judge made. I've still got Idiocracy on DVD and i still watch it every few years and cry at how accurate it was/is.....

First watched idiocracy in 2018. It was anxiety inducing.

My gf and i fell in love with this film... someone stuck it in our DVD case. A few weeks later she popped it in and we couldn't stop laughing.

I remember having an argument with a friend I lost in 08' about how I thought this movie was prophetic. Aside from missing my friend I wish he was around to see what he would say now.

"Idiocracy" is not a comedy, but a prescient documentary that is playing out as we witness it daily.

I now feel so prescient. I saw both "Office Space" and "Idiocracy," in a movie theater, during their initial releases. I had no idea how poorly the studio handled the two films. Perhaps the management at the studio recognized themselves and their families, in the characters, in both films.

Office Space was available to gen-X on IRC, so our generation (I'm 49) did see it. But then gen-X was a babybust so that meant fewer ticketsales as opposed to the kids and the boomers. Idiocracy was *also* mentioned in these circles but, in this case, it wasn't even released to many theatres. I had to drive from west Houston all the way to Baytown to catch a screening and, after like ten days, it wasn't being played even there.

I had never even heard of "Extract", just watched it a few days ago and it was great, had no idea it was also by Mike Judge 👍

Never pay attention to who is a the director when watching a movie. But now knowing that Mike Judge was also the director of Idiocracy, he definitely is my favorite director. Two movies in my Top 10, Office Space and Idiocracy.

i remember renting this to watch with my friends at 15 in 2002 i think, and it really conveyed to me the absolute hatred of bureaucracy and corporate-speak that never left me.

Almost the exact opposite line is in Stranger than Fiction after keeping track of things that were more comedic or tragedy, "This may sound like gibberish to you... but uh... but I think I'm in a tragedy.

I remember before this film came out, Newsweek did an article on it. One if the things mentioned in the article was that in the first draft of the film, the original reason why people became idiots was due to the education system in the US. Specifically, teachers no longer graded on what is considered "correct/incorrect", rather students were told if they "felt something was right, then it was". The example used was "as long as Timmy believes 2+2=5, then that's okay because we don't want to hurt his feelings." This was cut from the film because test audiences didn't think poling fun of teachers was okay. As a teacher, I wasn't offended by that at all.
