    So basically this product is aimed at someone who bought a M.2 SATA/AHCI drive and screwed up with the motherboard, taking one that only accepts NVMe or one that doesn't have an M.2 slot at all. Because otherwise if you want a Sata SSD connected to a Sata port on the MB you would juste buy a Sata one in the first place ... I mean they are even a little bit cheaper. Or it could be that you just got an M.2 Sata SSD from someone or another build but don't have the hardware to use it, like the So-DIMM to regular-DIMM Ram adapters. But even that was more interesting ! Still, it's nice to know if we're ever in need of such a thing, it actually exists and can be ordered on aliexpress.

  • @BloodSprite-tan

    yes but they make pci-e adaptor cards, so you don't have to deal with the stupid cables. so ??? what's the point, you'll never need something like this. even if you did, like on a itx case, there isn't a place for it, given 2 memory slots. it's a really bad idea.

  • @GervasitorSpaceman67

    @GervasitorSpaceman67

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@BloodSprite-tan I think most PCIe adaptors would be for NVMe drives, but there sure will be some for sata ones. But even though it can be useful for someone somewhere someday, it's not stupid as it works the way it's intended to. If you don't need it just don't buy it, I never said everyone should have one just in case, I said if you're ever in need of something like that it's reassuring to know that it exists.

Again, I'm not saying that a lot of people would actually need this, as there are lots and lots of other solutions that you would think of before that, including your PCIe adapter. I'm just saying that it's nice to see it exists, because if you need a M.2 AHCI to regular SATA adapter and don't want to use another expansion slot, you can. you might not even use it in a ram slot, after all it's just a solution they found so that it would actually be attached to your computer. And I can see that it can be misleading to some people, but hey, if you see some weird shit on aliexpress, just send the link to Linus Tech Tips before buying it, and if they run out of topics to cover they will be glad that you found it !

    The manufacturer should have at least provided a "bypass" allowing a real ram to be installed above the product and have it pass thru right to the DDR4 pins on the motherboard, that way, it would have made sense to keep that adapter securely in place within the DDR4 serving as an anchor. As it is, I would much rather tape it to the side of the case inside.

    That's what I was thinking. But actually a simpler and faster solution is to emulate a harddrive in your memory. I've tried it and I got some incredibly high numbers in Crystaldiskmark, don't remember the numbers but it was nutty coming from my cheap computer. Why do this if you lose everything on power loss? Just create an image of your most used basically read only applications and have them set to save any new files to another drive, upon bootup have the hdd emulation software transfer that image to your RAM, invest the time first and then you get very high speeds for as long as your computer is on.

But even if it's basically just a placeholder, it could still work as a nice M.2 test setup. I don't suppose it is in its current state, but maybe there could be some hotswapping functionality added? even if just software-wise?
