They Lied About Nolan Smith, Here's the "Truth".

Спорт

In today's episode, I discuss Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher, Nolan Smith. He was one of the most impressive players at the 2023 NFL Combine. He put on a show, and many people, including myself, we were hopeful about his future. I don't know what the future holds for this young man, but I'm cncerned that too many fans are losing faith. His production is being limited by the lack of snaps he's seeing. This is probably due to the fact that we're loaded on the edges. I still think Nolan Smith's best days are ahead of him.

They should be using Nolan as a wild card like the Cowboys did with Micah Parsons, his first year play him off ball spying certain quarterbacks, blitzing and use him as a wide nine stand up with his speed and bend

I wish they would play Reddick and Nolan opposite of each other. They both could be wild cards. They could rotate between who is rushing and who is dropping back. This is the type of hybrid defense I wish they would run. I think it would be dominate and would confuse and be difficult for offensive lines to pick up on this.

What's up Kenzo! Yeah, I wish they rushed him from the A and B gaps more often too. I just think Sweat, Reddick, and Nolan Smith's speed is a tough matchup for offensive lines. If anyone makes a mistake, good chance one of those guys is getting a free rush.

@@CoachHeitter I heard in the off-season desai was going to run a hybrid defense. They should have all 3 players in Sweat Reddick and Nolan on the field at all times. And throw in with that Blankenship should be thrown all over the defense as well like Malcolm Jenkins used to be or like BDawk was. Talk about finding a Gem as a undrafted free agent. He has been great since coming in against the packers last season (I was at that game) between these 4 players they need to be running a full on hybrid new style defense. With the young talent and speed in the pass rush they should be able to confuse and have offenses off balance. Instead average QBs are still throwing for 300+ yards 2 tds. It's insane, ever since the great jim Johnson and his disciples like Sean McDermott and Spagz have left Philly there is ALWAYS receivers or tight ends running wide open all over the field. Regardless of whoever has been in charge of the defense. When is Philly 8to have an aggressive, confusing innovative defense that is feared???

It's not at all uncommon for teams to wait until mid-season to play rookies. One rookie I want to see more of is moro ojomo. Ojomo is every bit the athlete that Milton Williams is. But with longer arms. Short arms was the knock on Williams. It was said that it would limit his upside. But ojomo has above average arm length and superior ability. He may take part in a rotation by next year.

  • @CoachHeitter

What's up John! I'm excited to see Moro Ojomo get some playing time too. Although, I wouldn't put him in the same category of athlete as Milton Williams. That guy is just a different type of player along the interior. For reference, Milton put up a 6.96 LDrill (3-cone). You normally see that number with Defensive Backs and Receivers. Although, while Moro Ojomo and Milton Williams ran very different total 40 times, those 10-splits from both guys are elite for their size. Basically, both guys are really explosive off the line. Those first few steps are very fast. With that said, I pointed to Moro Ojomo's length and ability to maintain leverage as a big part of why I'm excited to see him play. Part of the reason he was such a good run defender in college was due to his ability to play true to his leverage. I also think he has upside as a pass rusher. I don't think he's a natural rusher, but with time, I think there is something worth developing with him. With a little experience learning hand usage, and footwork, I think there is real upside for Ojomo as a pass rusher.

Yeah stats aren't facts and definitely need context. There are so many perspectives and it is beneficial to consider others when they come from a source you respect. That said, I would love to see N. Smith off ball LB. I think someone mentioned it in the comments. I recall them trying during training camp if I am not mistaken. From the fiilm, it seems he struggles quite a bit as a edge rusher. If he could harness that athleticism and high motor combine it with understanding of coverage!? I mean sure he can probably learn some pash rush moves but it is an uphill battle. Better for him to cover sideline to sideline. He can also rush coming downhill. We could use the depth too

If they dont win with speed they get stonewalled by the OT and can't get around him. 6-2 or 6-3...245lb Edge rushers not going to do squat in NFL.

What’s up Chris! I would say scheme matters in these evaluations. I’m not going to say that Nolan Smith, Dallas Turner, etc are inherently too small to play in Vic Fangio’s Penny fronts. You have to understand the role, and assignments within their alignments. With Vic, he plays a few different alignment calls. You will see him play anything from Jimmy, to Pony, to an under front with a 4i aligned to play strength side. In Jimmy, he has a 5T on the play strength side, the strong side, that two gaps. He will control the inside shoulder of the tackle, and cause run plays to spill outside. In Pony, both the 5T and 3T will 2 gap on the strong side. In the under front, the 4i on the strong side will play gap and a half. Basically, he will follow the hips of the tackle or guard if they begin to pull. Then, in those fronts, on the outside of that Jimmy, Pony, or under front 4i aligned end, you have a LB that is either on-ball (overhang), or he can be an Apex defender that is a yard or two off-ball. In this front, one would expect Jalen Carter, Milton Williams, or Moro Ojomo to be the Jimmy aligned end. Theoretically they could use B.G., Sweat, or Tarron Jackson to fill this role too, but those guys are normally weak side, and not play side, strong side, in these fronts. That means, Haason Reddick, Bryce Huff, Nolan Smith, Zack Baun, etc would play the role of the Apex defender where the ball is spilled out to. All of those guys are big enough to play the On-Ball or Apex role. You just wouldn’t want them aligned as the Jimmy, Pony, or under 4i end in those fronts. The way Vic plays the run is unique, and it’s all about taking away the inside running lanes. He wants the ball bounced outside. His secondary is very important in their run fits. He will use concepts such as Roll Luggage, or even Cover 8 where he can get aggressive with safeties coming down below 10 yards off the LOS. His safeties need to be able to cover a lot of ground, his outside corners have to wrap up and play short zone, and the Star/Rover/Money Backer/Apex/or Nickel needs to be able to tackle if the ball is spilled outside to them. Basically, no free lancing. Which was a problem last season with some of our “Apex” or “Money Backers” playing outside containment. Some guys got greedy, rushed up field, and left the outside open.

@@donaldedwards3997 I was asked to do player evaluations for the top Edge rushers for the 2024 draft. I watched every pass rush of Turner, Chop, Verse, and Latu in 5 games each. I kept tally of Win, Loss or NA for each pass rush. By far Turner had the most losses. Besides being undersized he has no hands at all. And I cannot emphasize enough how important having good hands to swat, rip, swipe the OTs hands so they can't snatch you up.

Sure, so are Jonathan Allen and Josh Sweat too. All of the players listed carry bigger frames than Nolan Smith. However, that’s not really the point of the video. I’m talking about prospects that had crazy testing numbers, but didn’t play much their rookie season, and required a year or two to develop. Pretty much everyone of these guys played under 15% of their team’s total defensive snaps their rookie year.

@@CoachHeitter I agree scheme matters. If guys like Smith or Turner play more off the ball LB or stand up blitzer they can be effective. What I am referring to saying they are too small is if they are lined up on the line, like a regular D-End, with a 6-6...315lb OT across from them that they have to engage with at the snap. Later I will post videos of all Turners pass rushes vs LSU and Texas and you'll why I say this. But overall I agree with you scheme matters.

I think there are two separate talking points here to dissect. The first being about the physical frame of the player, and the other being about their ability to actually rush the passer in the NFL. To the first point, I’m going to be up front, I think the definition we started with of what constitutes an edge player is too narrow. I think it’s okay to have preferences towards the style of player, but we still need to acknowledge there are a lot of sub 255 lbs edge players in the league now that are good players. The bottom line is Von Miller, Khalil Mack, T.J. Watt, Leonard Floyd, Haason Reddick, Micah Parsons, Byron Young, Will Anderson Jr., Nik Bonitto, and Alex Highsmith are all tweener edge players that are sub 255lbs, and can really rush the passer. To be transparent, my favorite edge players are the athletic gifted players with good reach and wingspans. I’m a fan of the Jadeveon Clowney, Danielle Hunter, Josh Sweat, D.J. Wonnum, Brian Burns, Jermaine Johnson, and Kayvon Thibodeaux types. I like players that offer great athleticism to rush the passer, but also have the reach and wingspan to be really good at setting the edges in the run game. I don’t think each guy is equal to one another, but their frames are a large part to how they play the edge. Then, there are the bigger, stronger, technically sound edges. I would put guys like Maxx Crosby, Aidan Hutchinson, Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa, and George Karlaftis in that group. Then, there are a ton of guys that kind of fall in between 2 categories. A good example would be Myles Garrett. He kind of fits in the athletically gifted, long arms, and wingspan group. But he also fits within the big, physical, technicians group of edges too. To the last talking point, truthfully I don’t know. I still think Nolan Smith has a lot to prove as a pass rusher in the NFL. I think those that say he’s a bust are too early to their evaluation, and those that crown him the next Haason Reddick are too early to their evaluation. It’s early. I think the young man is better vs the run than his size would lead you to believe. I also think he is very gifted as an athlete. However, I also think he has much to learn about hand usage, and leverage when playing the edge. I genuinely like to give guys a couple of off seasons, especially on the D-Line.
