Jalyx Hunt Has A RISKY But MASSIVELY High Ceiling!

Спорт

In today's video, I discuss Philadelphia Eagles 3rd round draft pick, Jalyx Hunt. This is one of the more controversial picks of the 2024 NFL Draft. Some people absolutely love this pick, and others absolutely hate it. However, why did Howie Roseman make the pick, what kind of player are we getting from Houston Christian? And, last but not least, what do you make of a guy that played lower level competition, and barely has film accessible to study?

It will be interesting to see his snap count at the end of the year. The Eagles definitely gave Josh Sweat time to develop, according to pro football reference he had 68 defensive snaps his first season. They slow played Nolan Smith last year too, they credited him with 188 snaps. In 2018, the Eagles had on paper, a pretty good pass rush group. That team contained Brandon Graham, Michael Bennett, Chris Long, Derek Barnett, Daeshon Hall, and Josh Sweat. The top end of that pass rush was a group of very experienced players, and a 2nd year player that was a 1st round pick, top half of the draft pick. There wasn't a clear path towards extensive playing time minus injuries occuring. In 2023, once again on paper, the Eagles looked like a stacked pass rush group. It clearly didn't turn out that way. However, we had Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat, and it felt like those two guys barely left the field. Behind them a veteran guy in Brandon Graham, and for the first half of the season Derek Barnett. Once Derek Barnett was waived in later November, we saw Nolan Smith play more, and they started to use Patrick Johnson as the 5th Edge. It definitely feels like there is the possibility of more snaps here this season. We definitely will see a top four dominant rush... Josh Sweat, Bryce Huff, Brandon Graham, and Nolan Smith. I get the feeling there will be more of a rotation this year with our edges, and that might include some IDL kicking out as 5 techs with their hands in the dirt, during certain situations. That would be guys like Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, Jalen Carter, and if he is rostered, Gabe Hall. However, to take snaps off of Josh Sweat's knee, and to help ease Bryce Huff into that expanded role, that could mean our 5th Edge playing more. That could lead to 200 snaps for a young guy like Jalyx Hunt. That is definitely more snaps than I would have said when we first drafted him. The other guy to watch out for here is Julian Okwara. He is physically gifted, and he has experience. He is in the situation he currently finds himself in because of injuries. If they go 6 deep at Edge. he could factor into this discussion.

Always great breakdown from the coaches perspective. I don’t do analytics but Gate City does and it makes sense from the real football perspective.

The Cornell S background is key. Projected rusher with a drop and cover backstory. Why Vic supposedly wanted him.

What’s up Jazz! His hip fluidity in coverage as an EDGE certainly didn’t hurt him with Vic. However, when I looked over his measurable and his testing numbers, I immediately said Fangio front guy. He is eerily similar to Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd in the measurable. He’s like right between these two guys. Then, while his numbers aren’t quite to the level of Von Miller, Von tested like a Nickel/Slot CB, there are some similarities with that first step. You will hear people refer to Jalyx as being on his toes when he takes off, and that sudden burst and power is what made Von Miller tough to defend. Although, to pump the brakes a little, he needs to learn hand use to ever be anything close to Von Miller.

He's like Nolan Smith with how athletic he is, and the length and power of Josh Sweat. Both he and Nolan need better hand usage.

What’s up Dank! To me, Nolan Smith is more so along the line of Haason Reddick, Von Miller, and Micah Parsons. Not that he is as talented as those guys, he has much to prove. However, his measureables and testing resemble those guys coming out of college. While, on the other hand to me, I see guys like Khalil Mack, Leonard Floyd, and Tuli Tuipulotu when I analyze Jalyx Hunt. Jalyx is definitely a Fangio overhang. He’s a really good athlete and eerily similar to Leonard Floyd’s testing numbers, he has great reach and wingspan, he is stronger on film than his workout showed, but not quite Khalil Mack or Tuli Tuipulotu yet. However, he plays with effort, and I do think he will get stronger like Mack and Tuli.

As soon as I saw his measurables, I thought Fangio overhang. Then, his testing numbers, I started to really think about what Vic had in Chicago, Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd. From the measureables to the athletic testing, he is right between them.

Well he already broke down how Isaac was gone before 94. We honestly have enough pass rushers for this year to develop Hunt.

I think it’s easy to forget that Khalil Mack, formerly a Fangio and Brandon Staley Overhang, he went to school at Buffalo. There is always an element of uncertainty about competition level with small schools, but sometimes the underlying athleticism makes it difficult for us to pass on these guys.
