THE TRUTH About Nakobe Dean's Play!

Спорт

In today's video, I discuss Philadelphia Eagles LB, Nakobe Dean. Many people have criticized Nakobe's play on the 2023 season. Most recent, Dean's play on passing downs has been brought into question. Does Sean Desai and the coaching staff have doubts about Nakobe Dean's ability to stick in coverage? Let's talk about the ALL 22 and Advanced Analytics behind his play. The NFL is such a weird space at times.

    Nakobe Dean has really not played a whole lot of football in the NFL. Red shirted his first year and dealt with injuries this year. It’s way too early to know exactly what his upside is. I think he’s been perfectly fine so far and just hoping he will continue to develop

    Hey Gates. Good content as usual. Question, with Nakobe Dean, from what you've studied so far, do you see Nakobe progressing into an elite player, good player or hard to say? Also, and please don't walk out on this question, with Hurts's knee injury, could that be affecting his passing?

  • @CoachHeitter

    @CoachHeitter

    8 ай бұрын

    What's up Chad! Tough to say on Nakobe. He's still super young. Right now, he has very good instincts in run defense. He's ahead of his time there. As a delayed Blitzer, he's very good at timing those plays, and he plays with violence. In pass coverage, he's getting better, and his eyes are starting to see things. However, right now, he doesn't have the length of Cunningham to use those natural gifts to disrupt throws. So, he has to develop there. Although, people are really reactionary, and are definitely overreacting to his play in coverage. In terms of Jalen, from the mechanics of his throwing motion, to the follow through of his lower half, I don't see any disturbance. Now, schematically, the QB run inside the RPO play has been hindered. So, there is an effect of the injury there. He still keeps plays alive, and does a good job eluding pressure. Tough to say the exact effect right now.

    I highly doubt that he's currently the green dot of play calling. He was in week 1, but due to the rotation, I doubt he is now. That guy doesn't normally leave the field. If I had to guess, last week was likely Reed Blankenship. It would be weird to split that responsibility across your three LBs. But to be fair, I don't think we have received an update on that responsibility recently.

    I don’t have a problem with Dean or morrow or Cunningham . I just have a problem with the overall lack of speed at the 2nd and 3rd level. To me it’s very risky to have a slow corner , slower safety in reed , slower slot corner in Eli ricks and linebackers who are average or below athletes plus 2 are undersized. All the players are fine individually but when you have that many guys in one defense who don’t run well it’s gonna be hard to cover teams like Washington with 3 good , fast receivers and an athletic TE . This is what we have for now but next year getting more athletic has to be a priority.

    What's up Nathan! That's not really true. Morrow, who I really like, he got picked on a little yesterday, and he hasn't been as good defending the run as I was anticipating when we made the signing. If I'm being honest, he didn't have his best game yesterday, but just like Dean, he is a very instinctive pass rusher, and I'm glad he's on the team because he's still a quality player. Now, Zach Cunningham was really good yesterday. He is a super underrated player on this defense right now.

    Morrow's PFF rating is 8th. Cunningham is 44th. Dean 60th. Out of 80 rated LB's. Dean is too small, not possessing physical attributes you would expect for a NFL LB. Maybe Dean gets better as season goes on, and maybe not.

  • @CoachHeitter

    @CoachHeitter

    8 ай бұрын

    Exactly. They are about the same size. Also, while grades are impartial, they have limitations. That's why you have to use them alongside the tape to see what is going on. For instance, according to PFF, Nakobe has been credited with 13/13, 120 yards, no TDs, no Impact plays (PBU, FI, INT), and a 105.1 passer rating. Morrow is credited with 15/17, 100 yards, no TDs, No Impact plays, and a 91.4 passer rating. However, Morrow is the 20th highest graded LB in coverage, and Nakobe Dean is 78th. Of those 13 targets, 8 of them were last week. I'm sure scheme has nothing to do with it, and we're valuing 20 yards and 2 incompletions without impact that highly? I mean come on.

I know what I saw on film. Dean hasn’t been perfect at all but, Desai has to fix his scheme to put his players in the proper positions to make plays. He hasn’t done awful, however there are OBVIOUS fixes that need to be made to his coverage scheme in order for LB’s to not be lined up against Cooper Kupp and Puka Nakua. 🤦🏿‍♂️
