I buy RAW and grade myself generally. Have bought some slabs but mostly high grade some to fill collection, others to crack, press and resubmit!

I buy mostly slabs now for my pc. I do clean and press my own books and submit new books to CGC but I’m not interested in buying a raw grail and trying to submit it or even do CPR on a slab. I would and have just bought it already graded. My collection is not for investment or retirement, just enjoyment. 😊. Great video!!

Today I bought a 4.5 X-men #12 yellow label, AntMan1 raw, AS300 raw, moonknight1 raw, J-into mystery #115 3.5 I buy both my collection is 10months old but I pretty much have everything I wanted I’m buying small keys now to have. I also have my nephew with me a lot I suggest we find family that we can introduce into the hobby.

It all depends on the books. The books I look for are far from few being raw due to scarcity. But silver or bronze age books are very easy to find raw still. Plenty of supply still out there

To your point about people wanting equity on their comic books. We need to talk about sellers trying to sell their raw books for graded prices. They want to have their cake and eat it too, while passing the actual grading burden to the buyer. Why would I buy a raw comic with the intent to grade if the grade it will likely receive has an FMV equal to or more than the cost of buying the comic + grading + shipping. It makes no sense.

i don’t know about that. Maybe in 200 years when all these books have changed hands, but for the foreseeable future most people don’t have 45-300 dollars plus to grade a single book. Let alone their whole collection of keys . That’s a lot of money. Then again are we only talking grails or silver keys like x-men 50 or 60 as well

The problem with referencing the census is skewed. How skewed? Who knows. People crack and resubmit the books without turning in the old label.

Absolutely that comic dad doesn’t understand the hobby ….. I think he’s a card guy and if you watch his videos he says the same thing in every video and doesn’t understand how resubmitting the same book works and how insane it is to consider the census as legit…. Cgc needs to do away with it imo it’s flawed and obviously guys like card dad or whatever can’t understand it

It’s a vicious cycle. The raw collectors buy slabs and crack out the books. Then somewhere down the line they sell to a slab collector who slabs it. You could have the same comic graded infinity times. That, coupled with the CPR people who don’t return the labels, the census will grow forever…

I think the census has one major flaw which Mighty mentioned and that it is inflated due to people CPRing books. If you don't send in the labels then CGC doesn’t know so you have the same copy of a book appearing multiple times.

I just got into comics as an adult about a year ago. I currently have 22 raw book short boxes and only 1 box for slabs. Probably won't let my collection get bigger as I've got about 90% of what I want already. Maybe I'll add another box for slabs though. I don't buy any big books but I have some nice raw smaller keys like Star Wars #1 and 42. I only rarely pick up a slab if it's a really good price for a book I want. Slabs take up too much space so I'll keep my number of slabs low.

I consider Dustin a friend in collecting (though as @TheSportsCardDad) and he is definitely bringing that sports card knowledge to comics. He, as I, has seen the obsession with grading at the sports (and non sports) card level and that shift to comics is inevitable. His take on value is pretty similar to his take on older sports card values dropping as more of those cards are discovered and slabbed. My push back on the sports card side is the same on the comic side...there may be a ton of those silver age comics out there and being graded but there aren't a ton of them coming back in high grade. That is where the scarcity factor comes in. Sure, there were 18 comics of Avengers #1 graded but what was the breakdown of those grades? Sure, 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle cards have been graded in the past month but the scarcity of high grade copies of that card (and comic in the Avengers example) will keep the value up. Collectors (in general) are always drawn to the "best" version of what they are collecting.

A guy reviewing a guy reviewing a guy haha. Fascinating to think about. Think Im gonna keep mine raw so I can rent them out by the hour for people to feel/smell/read, ya know what comics were originally made for. But to answer your question, for the first time ever I've felt called to slab some things and they are my pulps from the 30s and 40s. I think they look great in slabs and they are super frail so theres a preservation aspect. Also not trying to read those ever just admire. Slabs are bulky and make my comics feel like han solo frozen in carbonite

  • @pauly237

The really big keys will only remain ungraded if the book is incomplete or has extensive restoration. Pure lunacy that a low grade slab can still command more money than an upper midgrade raw.

  • @Grimwulf88
    @Grimwulf882 ай бұрын

I've sold all modern raw keys based on condition. For example, ppl seen raw modern keys go for as low as 20 dollars if given a VG to VF rough grade. Now, that same book given a NM high grade will go for more. If it's a 200 dollar 9.8 and a 140 dollar 9.6, I'm pricing the book close to a 9.6 which is me guaranteeing it deserves at least a 9.6 at around 110 dollars raw. Ppl will always try to get it cheaper if they're trying to flip after graded. I may go a little lower, depending if they are buying more from me. Now if I decided to get these books graded, and they come back a 9.4, then I'm screwed. But if they hit a 9.8, then I can maximize my money. However, the process for me isn't really worth it.

I will buy both slabbed books and raw books. I am most interested in the books that I need and if I plan on getting the book created, I believe I can save $50 by going ahead and purchasing it already slapped. In my case every $50 I can save is well worth it.

I have been buying almost all raw books since the CGC escapades of last year, unless I see a slab that is well under FMV at auction. I was disappointed with the way CGC handled the reholdering incdient, given the issues with newton rings and inner well movement it was well past time for a slab and process redesign. I say this as someone who owns over 900 CGC slabs but I really dislike when I see a company sweep large issues under the rug without considerable updates to their product.

Hey Lawrence, listen I was doing the same as you buying raw comic books, silver age and then sending them out to get graded. You do know that’s like gambling on a horse. You don’t really know what you are getting when you buy a raw book especially major keys.. you are going to spend significant money, and who the hell knows they might come back restored so you might overpay. Well, when I was still working, I was doing OK. I was only buying slabs because I knew what I was getting.. amazing fantasy 15 6.0 tales of suspense, 39 8.5 . On the other hand, I took a small gamble in New York. I got a raw copy years ago X-Men 1 end it came back 7.0 I only paid $300.. most of the time unless you are getting a great deal like that. It’s a pretty big gamble with raw books

If I am going to spend thousands of dollars on a book, I want to know what I am getting so I am not shying away from slabs. That being said, If I come across a deal on a raw book, I hope that I am knowledgeable enough to determine whether or not to buy that book, but that happens rarely with the keys that I am seeking.
