I went to a mental hospital that was for kids. While I was in the cafeteria, my heart broke seeing all of those little kids who were spending their childhood in a fucking psych ward. There was one kid that had to be put in a solitary room without any windows because he had gotten violent because he thought the doctors were lying to him. His mom wanted nothing to do with him and whenever he would try to call her, she never picked up the phone. The last time I saw that kid he was being practically dragged out of the room by the doctors while he screamed "I just want to see my mom!" That still haunts me to this day.

One of a kids on my fathers side, a cousin of his, died in an asylum at age 10. He went in at 7 due to severe autism. He died because of mistreatment and neglect and the family didn't know until the place shut and they found a simple death certificate that his body and his records were burned. But the facility kept charging the family even tho he died. They never knew till many years later. Its horrible. His mother was never the same.

My aunt was sent to an asylum for having cerebral paulsy. The church wanted to clean up the neighbourhood of undesirables and convinced my grandparents she would be better cared for there. The immediately regretted it when she was taken away with no goodbye. And they weren't allowed to leave her toys there for her. She went in a giggly girl who was healthy otherwise and died in 6 months and had her teeth removed for no reason. She was lucky enough that my grandparents at least got to bury her in a cemetery. Many others at the asylum were buried on the grounds with only a number to mark their resting place. This was Orillia asylum in ontario Canada.

Story time about asylums in my experience : (T.W: Messed up as hell) My great grandma was schizophrenic (she used to think drains spoke to her) and severely agoraphobic but she lived in a time where nobody understood her so she was in and out of asylums throughout her life. These asylums were filthy, horrible places filled with mostly women overall who just had emotions that weren’t understood (or genuine misunderstood issues) These places didnt help them, these places prayed on vulnerable people. My great grandma had 2 children, my grandad and great aunt. The thing is my grandad and great aunt were born very far apart and my great grandma was in and out of asylums often (once they got sick of her they sent her home). She was married so it is possible she could have had a baby. But my family has always silently wondered how it was possible for her to have fallen pregnant in the short times she wasnt shut away. Essentially what im saying is most of my family believe my Aunt’s father is not my great grandad after all but a worker at these asylums. This was the case for a lot of children belonging to these women because of how vulnerable they were to doctors and guards in asylums. The places were filled with disgusting treatment. Medieval really. Both my great grandma and great aunt are gone and I hope they are safe now. They had very happy last years of their lives, mental prison free and surrounded by family that loved them dearly. My mum speaks fondly of her grandma and I wish I was old enough to remember her before she died. I like telling her stories and I will certainly tell my children. I admire you Great Grandma, wish I met you, ive heard so many beautiful stories about how loving and fun you were

to those of you who don't know what a lobotomy is; it is where they took an orbitoclast, shoved it into the patient's eyesockets and scrambled the patient's brain. it caused some of the patients to go mentally retarded, other patients to become full of illness symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, fever, and frequent bowel and bladder movements. also, unfortunately most of the asylums didn't have anesthesia, so most of the patients that received lobotomies felt the pain the entire time that they were being performed on.

The Baker Act, a state law in Florida, means that you can be forced into a drug rehabilitation or mental health rehabilitation facility by other people, like family members, because of your "behavior". So its not a psychiatrist who is petitioning the court for you to be taken to a psych hospital. Your friends and family can ambush you and have you locked up, at least for a short time. We do not have that law in other states, just so people know. If you are aware that you suffer from mental health issues, you would be wise to check the city and state laws where you live surrounding how one can or cannot be forced into medical treatment.

When you don’t have the capacity for complex thought, regardless of why or how, the strongest emotion tends to be the driving force. It ain't hard to make a kid with part of his brain missing smile for a brief picture, either. Places were messed up.

I saw people beaten, I saw people pinned down on several occasions, I saw people locked in rooms, I heard the screams as a girl several rooms away had a tube forced down her throat after refusing to eat, and I remember people punching walls and doors to feel pain just to distract themselves from being locked away. The staff don’t care, the therapist doesn’t care, nobody believes you can improve, not really. Even only 30 days spent in that nightmare was more than enough to leave me thinking about it nearly a decade later. I’m mostly over it now, but at the time I couldn’t sleep, I constantly had flashbacks, I had massive trust issues for years and still do, and I hated myself for almost 6 years. I’ve never bothered seeking mental help since then even though I might benefit a little from it. Trusting isn’t worth the potential of another imprisonment.

If anyone really resisted ‘treatment’, whether that be meds or feeding tubes or any number of other delightful tortures they’d be held down, frequently by security guards, while nurses injected them with ketamine and then tossed them in the seclusion chamber. One girl had her arm completely smashed in this process when the door of the cell was shut on it as she struggled. It was horrific and I still have PTSD to this day.

One day they'll look back and realizing how crappy it was to say something like that I'm glad they dont have stuff like this anymore, and I understand you're talking about Asylums being gone, not mental health institutions. With that being said; My mom went to a mental hospital. It was traumatizing for both me and her. My Dad was the one that sent her, because he called her crazy over something HE caused. My Dad took my sister away from my Mom, and almost refused to give her back saying she was," Crazy," and," Would hurt the baby." He screamed at her for 13 years, mentally abused her, called her insane, etc. She was sick of it, and when she stood up for herself, she was called Crazy and got sent to a phsyc ward. She came back covered in bruises, and with major trust issues. I couldnt be near her, because shed scream, in fear, that shed hurt me, or shed flinch. They made her believe she WAS crazy, and therefore she came back even worse.

My mum worked in dovenby hospital, an asylum in Cumbria ; when she was 17 and was the only one to calm down this “ violent patient”in his 20’s strong big built , left on her own to deal with him ( as the drs and nurses to scared of him when he got frustrated) because she was a volunteer and had no worth to them ( in their opinion) so didn’t matter if she got hurt and came back with chains and cuffs for him she stood up to them and said no need he’s calm and only only like this because he’s scared . She told me his change in body language when they came with the chains and cuffs compared to when they left such a difference she cradled him and told him stories still bed time .I also got to know of a man personally born there because of his mum being unmarried and grew up there because of his learning difficulties till they shut it down he had a hard time adjusting to the outside . My very long winded point is you can take people out of the asylum but the experience still haunts you. Even recently when my mum in respite care happened to be managed by a nurse from dovenby ( we now live in a total different county to where we’re from ) scoffed at my mum for being “ just a volunteer “ and I think this is why she was badly cared for her jealousy of my mum doing over and beyond what she did ( basically showing her up . So Yh a couple of decades get over it 🙄

I work at a psychiatric unit and witness abuse from the staff that I never knew about.. I reported it and they did nothing because the staff was easy higher in rank. There is a lot that goes on unfortunately. But sometimes we have to separate a client for their safety or the safety of other clients. Sometimes they will turn inward and self harm too. So separating is the only choice someone. But it's in their own room with someone watching them. The only time I had to do this was when the individual had a psychotic break and thought they were being attacked. They were kicking and biting and it got hectic fast. We also wanted to protect their privacy from other clients and keep others calm so no one else fed off of what was happening.

Years ago there was this asylum that became abandoned. Kids there were going crazy staying. There were these 2 sisters, they werent sane, stabbed a worker with scissors. In 2021 I passed by that asylum, very eerie place

I spent almost half a year in a mental hospital, and sometimes I felt like it wasn’t much different from the pictures. I had to spend my fucking birthday there crying. I thought that they would let me out before I turned 14, my therapist said they would. But I ended up being there for 5 1/2 months.

I'm so proud of my grandma who shut down every person who told her to put my aunt in one of these places. Schools wouldn't let her attend so my grandma who had been a one room schoolhouse teacher taught my aunt from 3d to 12th grade. She was able to work a part time job and moved into a apartment which she would never have been able to do if they had just tossed her into one of these disgusting establishments.

We need psychiatric facilities that are actually humane and not completely fucked up like asylums were. Psych patients aren’t test subjects, they’re people who like any other patient needs help to recover and get back on a healthier track, whether it be helping them find motivation to live, find coping mechanisms for anxiety, or anything else.

JFK’s sister rosemary was born with disabilities, so her parents made her have a lobotomy at 5 years old. Then, when her lobotomy failed, her parents were sick of her and sent her to a psych ward for children for the rest of her childhood. So sad. I wish everyone was born normally and could have a safe facility for children and adults. sickening.
