These thumb guards help our NONVERBAL daughter TALK!

Thumb guards are tagged above!
We noticed throughout the weeks she has used these thumb guards, she used her voice more often. This has been an exciting time to hear her voice but it has also caused us all quite a bit of stress because she is having a hard time self soothing with her usual technique.
Although you do not have to be Autistic to stim, many autistic children develop unhealthy stims such as, thumb sucking, pulling out hair, yelling (vocal stim) or head banging. Our goal is to help Mikko transition to a healthier stim.

ahh I notice the difference already ! rather than the thumb sucking being her usual go to, she also responds with“no” and “stop” when she’s feeling overwhelmed with the hair tension as you’re brushing; but then you took a small break, let her know you had to keep going, and she was visibly upset but responded accordingly. You’re both doing so well !! ♡ 🥺

I was fighting the pediatricians to get him evaluated, but it was the audiologist that finally gave us the referral. He's not an honor's student finishing off his Junior year in High school, and went to his first prom where he was asked to dance by a lot of girls, causing a problem between he and his GF.

My 11 year old son (neurotypical) has curly frizzy hair and wants me to style it every morning. If he's moody or in a rush, he'll complain that every little tug hurts. I know when he's exaggerating and just wants me to hurry up and finish brushing his hair. We've offered to take him for a haircut but he likes his hair long right now. Cutting Mikko's hair isn't going to stop her from being a bit uncomfortable or antsy when she'd rather be doing something else and has to be patient for a few minutes while mom brushes her hair. Her hair is beautiful! Good job redirecting her attention mom!

I want to say that you are very heartwarming. Despite the fact that she mostly just babbles and makes sounds, you gently encourage her, even if she may only be able to use simple words, she's improving, and her knowledge of language is there, you can tell at times when you say things to her and she responds in her own way. You aren't discouraged, because if you were, that'd reflect onto her.

Congrats for all your steps forward! Little (big actually) thing I noticed: you don't actually speak to her much, as in explanations, easy questions etc... Like "I need to unbraid and detangle, see? This is a liquid that helps me, do you feel it's fresh? Do you like the smell...? As if to explain the things that surround her and then having her participate in the conversation her own way. I think that would help her get her messages through to you better. I mean, colors, animals, numbers, letters, all those are great, but I just had the feeling that she might not be hearing many words from you and that is one of the reasons for late speaking skills in kids (generalizing, I realise, but why not try??) Keep the great parenting!!

What I love most to watch is when you’re doing Mikko’s hair. My 1st grandchild is 1/2 black and has hair like Mikko’s😊 She is absolutely beautiful 😍 We’ve always told my baby how beautiful her hair is and so lucky to have such pretty curls. It goes all down to her bottom and we all love it. Thou it’s pretty it comes with much care and endurance because it takes time to brush, wash, condition 😊. We straighten it for the 1st time for her 10th B-day and she wanted it again for her 11th. I’m so glad she loves her curls more than straight hair. You know your daughter better than anyone and I’m glad you don’t let the rude or mean comments show in your videos. Much respect Momma. 💚🩷🤗🤗

Tough call, but you can see it helps her draw attention to other things. I think self soothing is so important, but sometimes distraction helps sooth, too. And you are teaching her that by giving her a chance to try other things. So important to know there are multiple ways to cope and soothe yourself. Stimming can be grounding and help with body awareness, but when being aware of your body is distressing, it can be helpful to draw your attention away from it. Saying that to her, whether or not you can tell if she understands, could help her. Autistic people so often need to hear the “why” behind what is going on. I think it’s probably important to allow thumb sucking at certain times, like at night since she doesn’t speak while she sleeps, anyway. Unless of course it’s causing dental issues. But if it’s not, than what’s the harm. It doesn’t look like this is an issue, but please never scold her for it. So many of my self care skills are motivated by shame, and it’s been taking a long time to build a different relationship to all of that. I finally showered last night because I wanted to, for the first time in a very long time, and I just wish I’d been taught how to enjoy those things more.

When engaged, Mikko will speak. Do you realize that not only were the guards put on, but a book was also given. When mom has given Mikko books in the past, regardless of what she's doing, Mikko will respond, with or without the thumb guards. It seems like it's more so the book and mom's engagement that has Mikko talking. Not the thumb guard. If mom is just there combing her hair, of course she'll suck her thumband not say anything. There's nothing else to do so she resorts to the thumb sucking. But when a book is given to her, and questions are asked about the book, Mikko is so engaging. This video does not show me that the thumb guard is the reason she's talking. It shows me that Mikko is yearning for books and conversation and THAT'S what is expanding her mind and speech.

  • @sjb4280

The thumb guards are not a cause effect situstion, shes just showing that it helps. Both because it encourages distraction with other things (like books) over self soothing and because generally speaking its harder to speak if you have your thumb in you mouth. Constantly having her thumb in and out her mouth or trying to speak with the thumb in her mouth is naturally going to slow down speech progression. Theres lot of other videos where she shows other techniques she uses to build speech skills, its never just one thing.

  • @mj4lu5hffg

    @mj4lu5hffg

@@sjb4280 I don't get your point. Mom said that these guards "help Mikko talk". Mikko is clearly thriving because of books and mom speaking to her. Not because of these thumb guards. The only thing these guards help with, is Mikko not sucking her thumb and having teeth that are ruined.

  • @AngelsOnScreen

@@mj4lu5hffgso in other videos when mom is engaging a lot with Mikko, Mikko will put her thumb in her mouth and at times attempt to talk around her thumb. Did you see how excited Mikko was to put the thumb guards on? She understands what they do. By not having her thumb as a distraction, Mikko can fully engage in using her voice. So the thumb guards are definitely helping. It also maybe a part of Mikkos routine. Thumb guards on mean I’m going to use my voice to communicate. Precious isn’t saying that the only reason Mikko is speaking more is because of the thumb guards. She’s saying it helps. She’s been using books and actively engaging with Mikko for years but Mikko is only recently (past few months) shown more interest in using her voice to communicate.

I tried a thumb guard for my thumb sucker. My daughter was a thumb sucker before birth. Her teeth were shaped just like your sweetie. The only thing that stopped the thumb sucking was a mouth guard/expander that was installed by an orthodontist. She didn’t wear it long but it was the only thing that stopped the thumb sucking! I felt bad when I had to turn the key to expand her bite. But I knew she would not want to live with such an extreme bite. Now that she’s turning 19 she happy we did it when she was small.

Just a question: Would it be less painful and require less time to do Miko's hair if it was shorter?

Precious (mom) has addressed this in her videos a couple times. Mikko has come so far on her hair journey (and her hair is out of this world beautiful), and uses her hair to stim. Mom is teaching her that she doesn’t get a pass on things like this that may be difficult for her, and in the meantime Mikko is learning the skill and the importance of grooming herself consistently as part of her daily routine. So mom has asked people to stop suggesting cutting Mikko’s hair; it’s never going to happen.

What about one of her fav little movies or a talking back pic/word even with spell on a tab. Anything to get you both finish quick. Just wondering if you were leant one from school or preschool, early intervention?? Anyone have an old one. I know all that's expensive but if you have a good app to put in, shes learning and getting pretty.
