Started collecting cards after a 25+ year absence. And after 5 months I'm out. The return on investment is absurd. 350$ hobby box for a $45 card. 99.99% garbage base and insert cards.

My personal favorites are sticker autos and non-game used memorabilia on premium sets or chase cards. That's if the big names even signed with that company lol. I've never understood the point of some random jersey they bought and cut up to put in a card. Maybe a guy wore it for 2 seconds at best. How special. And the sticker auto that hopefully he actually signed himself. The athlete prob ran through a thousand of them and resented every second of the process. Then they slapped that baby on some card that wasn't within 2000 miles of him. How special for the card owner. And don't get me started on the parallels lmao. Just print however many variants they feel like and stamp a random number on the back. Now you have a hit card lol. How is this hobby real? I don't understand. I grew up loving pictures of men so I'm not dissing the collector. Just it's completely out of hand and full of crap.

Been collecting again after a long time. Unless you have time, flipping or selling singles is hard. Best option is buy cases and hold them. IMO.

Wemby has the benefit also that he plays for a franchise with a track record of creating winners when they have his talent level. They are the best franchise for a player of his skill level to go and develop into great player. When you see what the Spurs have done with Manu, Tony, Tim and D. Robinson, and Kawhi, you know they can combine to create greatness.

When I saw the video and heard how Kentucky couldn't lose in the first round, I hope all sharp objects have been removed.

Jordan, Magic, Bird, Dr.J, every dream team member, Griffey, Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, cards straight from pack penny sleeved and top loaded since the 80s 90s = $20.... Brand new rookies that have done nothing from boxes that cost a home mortgage payment = $30,000... I'm not sure what planet I'm on anymore 😢 and who are these kids and teenagers that can afford these boxes and just rip all day....?? I DON'T UNDERSTAND

Im a hockey guy, I just bought a Nik Lidstrom PSA 9 Rookie for about $23. I also bought a raw Evan Bouchard rookie recently, that set me back $33. The difference is that Lidstrom is probably the second best dman of all time, and Bouchard is a 23 year old with one good year under his belt.

Amazing it takes this long for this guy to finally admit that prices are inflated and out of control.

That over $5000+ in card sales is an OUSTANDING data point. That specific range might be worth tracking over time. Actually, it feels like Wemby is in line in that is the most hyped rookie since LeBron. I know that Olympics means almost nothing in the card market, but with the Olympics in Paris, Wembanyama might become the most visible athlete in the world for a few week.

I'm surprised they didn't talk about the record crash of Mac Jones cards as a lesson in the absurdity of paying such high prices for unproven players

Wemby has a long long way to go to surpass Tim Duncan. Paying $1.5M for a Wemby 1/1 is absurd. I don't ever recall a Duncan 1/1 ever sold close to that.

For me, Prizm NBA is probably the best card for 2024 Basketball and therefore the one I will invest the most. I am NOT excited about NT or Flawless with "NO SIGNATURE" cards. Little interest in Select and probably more in Optic Rated Rookie Color, but I think this is why Prizm and Wemby are doing we well. He draft cards are down if I am no mistaken.

Well, I would imagine that it’s different from like a normal store that relies on a lot of people buying a cheap product, every time someone walks into that store they’re spending a couple hundred dollars and they have the occasional person that spends a couple thousand dollars, plus all the online stuff, I imagine it’s kind of like a jewelry store where there’s always like five people standing around, but only takes one or two sales a day to pay off daily expenses, everything after that is money in the bank Just random thought

There was a dip I bought into him after the first few weeks of the NBA season when he wasn’t playing that good. All of the cards I got doubled at least. Jalen Brunson was another guy I went heavy on before he made the Allstar team. I’ve been a PG my entire life so I tend to know what players are about to take off. There’s another guy who everyone should start investing into Asap…

His cards are already priced as though he is an all time great. We've already hit the ceiling and the dude has not even finished his first season. The same people were jumping on Mac Jones and Zion . I think Wemby has potential to be great, but there are basically 2 results. He becomes 1 of the top 5 players in history and proces stay same or he doesnt and they drop. I dont see any scenario where prices increase. Same thing with Caitlin Clark and all the other rooks getting there 15 minutes of fame .

Pricing isn't based off of what a player has accomplished over a period of time or years down the road if they've amassed enough stats and legacy to make the hall of fame anymore. That's not what sets the price anymore. What sets the price is how hot they are, what they've accomplished during their rookie season, and their potential for greatness. For example Pacheco base prizm rookie cards were selling for like anywhere between 80 to 100 plus in 2022 and very early on in 2023 which is crazy. I've seen a tommy devito sage "rookie" card sell for 50 dollars! during his little three game streak when tommy cutlets was born lol Joe Burrow, Herbert, and Trevor Lawrence cards used to sell for bukoos of money and now they are usually pretty affordable. Hell look at Deshaun Watson now. You can get his silver prizm rookie card with 9.5 bgs or psa 10 grade for a little over 100 dollars if you're looking hard enough and I'm of the belief that Deshaun will eventually bounce back in a HUGE way and I believe that's gonna happen in the 2024 season. But yeah it's what's hot, hot is king.

My thing is if there is no autos in some of the biggest products his numbered cards should be the price of auto cards the hunt is expensive why open a 1000+ dollar box to sell a Wemby for 50$ it makes no sense and not every box / case has a Wemby colored or numbered card I’ve seen cases break and only base Wemby gets pulled so.. my question is are you going to wait to see if boxes go down before buying because I don’t think boxes are gonna go down imo… I’ve seen ppl spend 1000s of dollars for break spots so I’d imagine ppl are adding up the odds 1 box is 1000+ it takes a average of x boxes to = a colored number Wemby aka money invested is crazy to pull such a card

I think I can explain this & why it DOES make sense.. Please hear me out. Of all of Wemby’s licensed NBA Rookie cards for 2023 Product, his Prizm base will be the Gold Standard of what all other products are measured against. Panini not having auto rights to him, makes the other products released this year, basically “second-tier” and lower. Compare it to NFL, if you need to, and to CJ Stroud. Also keep in mind, Players get ONE rookie year. That’s it.. Neither Stroud, nor Wemby will have RPAs or autographs in any of the flagship NBA licensed products for their rookie year. That means there will be NO NT RPAs, NO Flawless RPAs, No Optic on card autos, NO Contender on card autos, No Immaculate autos or rpas, and the list goes on and on. This means; that 5 years from now, the most accessible & sought after cards for Wemby and Stroud will first & foremost be the rare, high grade numbered parallels for their Prizm Base rookies. Sure, there will be other parallels in other products such as Optic with Rated Rookies, but when all is said and done, Prizm will be the most sought after. Also, have you really opened a LOT of Prizm NBA or NFL?? The odds of actually pulling numbered Stroud or Wemby cards are so stacked. At $900+ a box, and over $10k a case, you may not even hit one. And even if you do, will it 10?? Likely not (have you seen the centering on these Stroud cards??!!). My point is, until Fanatics/Topps takes the reigns (completely) we wont have those high end licensed autos & rpa cards again. For Wemby, THIS is his rookie year. Sure, there will be LOGOmans, and other low numbered patch cards for Stroud and Wemby, but in the end, the Prizm Base parallels will be the most recognizable card for them.
